I created a tutorial video with a goal to show members of the YIS community, particularly students how to manage their Facebook privacy settings so that they can have a safer experience on Facebook. After listening to Robyn Treyvaud, a speaker about internet safety, I realised that most students had not customised their Facebook settings to be more private. I thought the GCD was a perfect opportunity to share my knowledge about safety with others.

Facebook Privacy Settings

The tutorial video was made using Quicktime. It was difficult to think about what to say and to say it succinctly. Next time I make a tutorial I will plan and write out a script beforehand.

Though this tutorial was about one focused thing, Facebook privacy settings, this tutorial and Robyn Treyvaud’s discussion made me realise the importance of internet safety for children. An issue that has only arisen in the past ten years, I am sure the safety of the internet for children will continue to be around for many years to come. Making this tutorial has made me more interested in internet for children. As we are the first generation of students with internet, I feel that a lot of things are still not sorted out. The awareness is simply not there in some cases. The most important thing is to be aware of the dangers and protect yourself against them.
