Antony’s Speech

March 8th, 2012 by · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” in Act 3 Scene 1, Mark Antony’s speech’s visualized presentation. The first picture is in line 258 of the Mark Antony’s speech, second picture in line 260, third, 270.

The first image represents a hand drawn in red, representing a bloody hand. Mark Antony mentions ‘blood’ several times during the speech through line 254 to 275. “Woe to the hand that shed this costly blood! I chose this picture, because I thought this ‘bloody hand’ image would describe Antony’s long figurative speech.

Second image represents a colorful lip. “Which like dumb mouths do ope their ruby lips.” I thought ‘colorful lips’ would represent the ‘ruby lips’, using various colors. ‘Like dumb mouths’ and ‘ruby lips’ there is a contrast and a contradiction between the two speech, dumb represents adjectives such as ‘filthy’ and ‘pathetic’, while ‘ruby lips’, lips represented as ruby is mentioned. I chose this image because this ‘colorful lips’ would describe ‘ruby lips’, which ruby are often used to describe colorful and shiny features.

Third image represents, “And Caesar’s spirit, ranging for revenge, With Ate by his side come hot from hell”. Caesar’s spirit described as ‘hot from hell’, with an image of lava. Caesar’ spirits are hot and hellish. I chose this ‘lava’ pictures, so that I can describe Caesar’s hot ranging spirit, Mark Antony is making a speech.

This task helped me, mad me thought deeply of how using images to describe someone’s speech is important. Since there are no visual image to support Antony’s speech, readers will have to imagine visually, so that readers can understand what Antony is wanting to say. Therefore many different images can be formed between different readers.
