icolaus Copernicus was a famous mathematician and astronomer who was living in the Renaissance period. He was one of the most important people in the history of astronomy. He was the one who thought up the theory that the Earth was not the center of the Universe, but that the Sun was. Until then, most of the people was certain that the Earth was the center of the Universe, Catholic teachings were based on the idea that the Earth was the center of the Universe.
