Family History

Picture 1The biggest migration of my family occurred when my father’s great grand father was alive. He was named Tan Kien. He was born around the beginning of the 1900’s in July, but the day is unknown. He lived in the south east part of the mainland of China called Xiamen. Xiamen means “The South Gate” in english, which gives a big clue about it being a huge port. He worked as a merchant trading cloth, silk and other Chinese products to Indonesia. Back then in China the amount of money they get from local work is not a lot. Chinese are business minded. If there work doesn’t go good they try to go to other countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and most other South East Asia. But from out of all the countries most Chinese people went to Indonesia for work because Indonesia has a lot of island and have a lot of natural resources.

My mother’s great grand father migrated to China in a similar situation around the 1900’s. From a place called Moyan in the mainland of China, they migrated to Jakarta around the same period as my father’s side great grand father. They migrated to the capital city, Jakarta located on the Java island.

My father’s side grand father was born in Medan, Sumatra Island and grew up there. He was named Tan Hong Wei born in 1929 January 12 and met my grand mother Tin Sin Ok born in 1931 December 17. Her family was also from China. My grand mother was born in Permatang Siantar.

Few years later when my dad was in high school they moved to Jakarta because of my grand father’s work again. He worked in a Glass company an moved there in 1974. 1978 my aunt, uncle and grand mother left my father in Medan and left to Jakarta for school and work purposes and  in 1979 my father followed his family to Jakarta for university.

She grew up in the central part of Jakarta where it was very, very crowded and busy. It is where the biggest train station are and it is also where a lot of bus station is located.

In 1985 both my father and mother went to Trisakti University in Jakarta and met each other. In 1985 both my parents started working in an airline company called Cathay Pacific for almost eleven years.

1995 October 27 I Kenji Tanoto was born in Jakarta. From then my father got a job in a paper company called APP and when I was three months old we moved to Singapore first in a place called Serangoon. Then when I became nine months old we moved to Yokohama, Japan because of the change in my fathers work location.

My family was all from China which makes me not look like an Indonesian person and now in Indonesia you will see more Chinese people being successful rather than the local people, because of the life style Chinese people had in the past.
