TOK: What is knowledge?

ACTIVITY: What kind of things do we know?

1. List of things that I know:

  • I know that one day is consisted of 24 hours, and that a year is consisted of 365 days.
  • I know that atoms were created when energy sped at a pace faster than the speed of light.
  • I know that gold is given a really rare image, but if you go to certain spots in Africa where humans built elevators that go really deep down the earth, there is plentiful of gold to mine, because the earth’s crust contains lots of minerals such as the mentioned gold.
  • I know that the more time you spend playing, the less time you have for finishing homework.
  • I know that there are species of bacterias that exist in very deep waters that live without any sunlight.
  • I know that the more attention you pay to your teacher during class, the more knowledge you will gain.
  • I know that I can roll my tongue.
  • I know that I don’t like to eat vegetables.

2. Identifying things that I know:

  1. FACTUAL, EVERYBODY KNOWS. I know that one day is consisted of 24 hours, and that a year is consisted of 365 days.
  2. FACTUAL, CERTAIN PEOPLE SUCH AS THOSE WHO MAJOR IN PHYSICS WILL KNOW. I know that atoms were created when energy sped at a pace faster than the speed of light.
  3. FACTUAL, VERY FEW PEOPLE ONLY KNOW. I know that gold is given a really rare image, but if you go to certain spots in Africa where humans built elevators that go really deep down the earth, there is plentiful of gold to mine, because the earth’s crust contains lots of minerals such as the mentioned gold.
  4. FACTUAL, STUDENTS ESPECIALLY THOSE IN HIGH SCHOOL WILL KNOW.I know that the more time you spend playing, the less time you have for finishing homework.
  5. FACTUAL, SOME PEOPLE WILL KNOW. I know that there are species of bacterias that exist in very deep waters that live without any sunlight.
  6. FACTUAL/PERSONAL, EVERYBODY KNOWS. I know that the more attention you pay to your teacher during class, the more knowledge you will gain.
  7. PERSONAL, ONLY ME OR ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN ME DO IT DURING BIOLOGY CLASS WILL KNOW. I know that I can roll my tongue.
  8. PERSONAL, SOME PEOPLE INCLUDING MY MOM WILL KNOW. I know that I don’t like to eat vegetables.

3. Reflection upon how I knew these statements:

Most of these things that I have listed were Factual, and only a few were personal. First of all, I knew (no.1) that a year is consisted of 365 days and a day is 24 hours because I have learnt this from my parents when I was little, and this is common sense. The second one is a factual statement as well but this one, only a selected group of people will know because it is in the region of advanced physics. Though I do not learn college-level of physics, I knew this because I read in a article of U.K monthly science magazine called, the ‘New Scientist’. The third one I mentioned is also a factual statement that only few people around the world know (as opposed to the normal people who believe that gold is rare), I knew as I watched a documentary titled, ‘Journey to the centre of the earth’ (where the title originally comes from Jules Verne’s novel) by the discovery channel. The fourth statement however is a really random topic in comparison to the statements I have given above, because I have just stated my knowledge, which I have acquired throughout the time I spent at during school. This also applies to (no.6), where I have mentioned that listening to teachers during a class will help us gain more knowledge. Furthermore, statements (no.7) and (no.8) are personal knowledge in contrast to the previous factual, and here I have stated about my dislike against a particular type of food, and that I can roll my tongue due to my inheritance. I know that I personally do not favor vegetables because when I am eating my food, usually those are the ones that get remained in the end. I also know because of the PTC-tasting we did in our biology class, which is a test to recognize whether you have the ability to taste a substance called the ‘PTC’, which is found in green vegetables, and those who can taste it tend to avoid eating it because of the genes we have in our body that help us avoid eating poisonous food. I also knew that I can roll my tongue because I saw on a science textbook that the ability to do so depends on your genes, so I was curious and tried it out.

4. Definition Of Knowledge:

My definition of the term ‘knowledge’ is simply, facts that you have heard from the people around you that you assume it is true or, facts you have acquired upon your observation through actions.
