Humanities is the subject that studies the human race and what we do for example; sociology, business, anthropology and other things. I decided to study the origin of human writing. I first studied Mesopotamia in 7th grade. I learned that the earliest known human “writing” was found in Sumer (which is a part of Mesopotamia). I decided to study human writing because I thought about how different the world would be without writing.
Without writing, I don’t think that the modern, civilized, organized world that we know would be the same. We would only be able to communicate through talking. We may develop to a certain level but we wouldn’t be able to reach our current state. We wouldn’t have computers. We may make one that talks, but that would be very unpractical.
Sumerian writing is the oldest example of writing in the world. Hieroglyphs were first used, and then symbols were later used to represent syllables. The earliest forms of writing dated back to the mid fourth millennium BC. They were all found on clay tablets that had been preserved for more than six millennia. Other civilizations were also able to develop their own form of writing too.

It is important to study the origin of writing because it gives us a better understanding of the world around us and how we were able to reach our current state. The origin of writing is related to many of the subjects that we studied this year. Such as the Renaissance wouldn’t have come without writing. It was the time of study. People needed writing. Religions needed writing too if they wanted to have holy books. It is very important to study writing because we will have to use almost everyday of our life.
