Drama 9- Lesson of February 27th 2012
Today in drama,we started off with a few improvisation games. We started off by playing statues, where two players got placed into frozen poses by two audience members. Then, they had to build a small scene/storyline based on their poses and had to justify their poses. I think for next time we play the game, we should use space (levels, etc.) and movement more effectively, although our use of these elements improved during the last improvisations. I also think we should work on maintaining our focus and maintaining our characters.
Next, we worked on the piece we worked on last week; Dana and Lee. Two of the groups presented their interpretation of the piece. The two interpretations were very different. Both versions used the element of human context and roles and relationships differently. Ellen and Nora made Dana seem more angry than Alec, William and Walter, which amde the moods of both pieces ver different. Ellen and Nora’s group used more of the element of space, place and movement in their interpretation.

4. Are there any pauses in the character’s dialogue? If so, what thoughts lie behind the pauses? How long should the pauses be held? Why? What impact do the pauses have on the mood and atmosphere of the script? Yes, there are many pauses in the character’s dialogue. During her pauses, Dana is contemplating what to say next to Lee. She is also trying to organize her thoughts. When she is pausing after an angry outburst, she is trying to calm herself down. I think the pauses should be held for around 2-5 seconds when the stage directions indicate pause. When the stage directions indicate a long silence or a long pause, the pauses should be held for at least 10 seconds. This makes the silent moment even more uncomfortable and makes the mood really awkward and adds a lot of tension to the atmosphere. The pauses make the audience feel uncomfortable as well and this makes them really sympathize with the characters, makes them feel the mood strongly and makes them believe the characters even more.
5. What do the other characters say about each other? What does this information tell you about the characters? During the piece, Lee says that Dana has been following him around lately and that this is creeping him out. This lets the audience know that Dana is very friendly and outgoing. It also tells us that she is not subtle and is even a bit nosy. Dana mentions that she and Lee were once good friends. This tells us that the two used to be close, however Lee went to a different school and something happened that pulled the two apart. Dana says that Lee is arrogant. This gives us a clue that Lee has done many things in the past that make him come off as stuck-up. Dana also mentions that Lee is clinging to a ‘mood’ and he hangs out on his own and ‘dwells’ on it. This shows how Lee can get dramatic at times and that he can wallow in his grief to maybe garner attention. Lee mentions in the piece that his mum doesn’t mind her own business. It is also revealed that she rang Dana. This shows that she is very concerned for Lee. This also demonstrates that she is friendly, outgoing and tries to get very involved in her son’s social life.
6. What is the character’s status in relation to the other characters? What evidence from the script can you find to support your opinion? I think in this piece, the characters are equal in status, not one is more superior to the other. They both use informal language when talking to each other and both are kind of rude to each other and insult each other in the script. If one character was superior, the other wouldn’t be rude like that and would speak more formally. Also, they would not sit close together. Therefore, no one is superior and they have the same status. However, Lee has control over the conversation because Dana is asking all the questions and Lee is in the position to decide whether to answer and let the conversation continue or not. But, Dana also has some sort of control as well because she knows things about Lee’s private life and personal issues, thanks to Lee’s mum.
