  1. Grade 8 Cricket Assignment

    April 25, 2012 by 16matsutania

    Question 1.
Watch the above video. The commentator said “Camera’s always cloud the issue”. Do you agree with the comment? Why/Why not? (small paragraph max.)

Answer: Although there are cases in which it is unclear wether the player is out or not, as in the case of this video, I think that cameras definitely make things more clear and less confusing, especially with the use of super slow motion and thermal cameras.

    Question 2.
List 2 main points of argument FOR the use of technology in cricket. List 2 main points of argument AGAINST.
**Command Term ‘LIST’:Give a sequence of brief answers with no explanation.

For: It makes it easier for the umpire to come to a fair decision. Some people like to bet on which teams will win, and with the advent of technology, the final score will be more clear and fair and nobody has to lose/gain money unfairly.

Against: It brings up conversations and arguments about different plays. A lot of die-hard cricket fans like to play cricket and watch cricket in a more traditional way, and don’t like it when new ideas/methods are introduced to change the way of playing and watching cricket.

    Question 3.
State whether you are For or Against the use of technology in cricket and explain your answer in a sentence or two.

I am definitely for for the use of technology in cricket, and I think that other sports should incorporate more technology as well. Because of the use of technology in cricket there are less errors made by the umpire so less people get sent out or dont get sent out unfairly.

    Question 4.
Search on Youtube for an example in which the use of Hawkeye, Heat Cameras or super slow motion cameras could have aided (or did aid) the umpire in an LBW decision. Please explain what happened in the video in detail showing your knowledge of the LBW rule and correct use of terminology.

In this match between England and the West Indies, the umpire did not use the hawk-eye footage but the footage was shown to the viewers. In the footage, it was clear that the ball would have hit the wicket if the batsman hadn’t touched it, but the umpire did not use the hawk-eye footage was because the ball was pitched outside the off stump and the batsman did genuinely attempt to play a stroke. Although, the umpire came to the conclusion that the ball would miss, I think that he should have asked for the hawk-eye footage to clearly see that the ball would not fly upwards and miss the wicket.

    Question 5.
Below is a photo of Merv Hughes. Is he fit? Use your knowledge gained from Mr Noon’s lesson and explain in detail. (one paragraph).

Fitness is the ability to execute the sport that one is playing, not about being muscular, slim or toned. In cricket you do not need to have cardio-vascular endurance because you do not have to run around the field. Being fit is all about being able to do the things that your lifestyle requires you to do. Because he is a cricket player, his arms have to be strong enough to catch a ball or bat and his reflexes will also have to be fast so he can hit or catch a ball quickly, and he has all of these attributes, meaning that he is fit for the sport he plays.

  2. G8 Badminton Reflection

G8 Net Games – Badminton assignment

You are playing singles… what choices do you have?

    1. After your serve, your opponent received and moved forward toward the net. Now your opponent is on the short service line. Where should you hit the shuttlecock back to? Which area in the court? Please explain.
(You can use pictures or drawings if that helps you better explain.)

The best thing to do is to hit the shuttle cock to the back of the opponents side, because that makes it harder for them to hit it back as they quickly have to run back.

2.You are rallying with your opponent for a long time during the match. Your opponent strikes a clear shot and keeps pushing you toward the back of the court and you are on the back boundary line. What can you expect the opponent will try to do? Where should you position yourself? Please explain.

In this situation, it is very important to anticipate your opponent’s movements. The opponent will most likely hit the shuttle cock to the front of your side which requires you to run for it.

    3. You would like to smash to score a point. What kind of strategy could you consider using?
What kind of attack make it difficult for your opponent to return? Please explain two cases you can think of.

You can make the opponent go back and then hit the shuttlecock to the front of his court, or send them to one side then hit into the other. Another strategy that can be very effective when you are trying to smash to score a point, is to hit the shuttlecock very low for the opponent. If you give your opponent a low shuttlecock, they are most likely to hit it high, and when they hit it high it is the perfect chance for you to smash the shuttlecock and score a point

    Practice number Time Location/Laps Thoughts
1 13:22 Negishi Park 2 laps I did reasonably well, but I know that I am capable of doing better
    2 Absent Negishi Park 2 laps N/A
3 13:14 Negishi Park 2 laps I did better than before. I ran one and a half laps without stopping
4 12:49 Negishi Park 2 laps I couldn’t breathe at times but I did well. First time to run two laps without stopping.
5 14:21 Negishi Park 2 laps I had trouble breathing and I stopped a lot. I was very tired at the end because I didn’t eat breakfast that day.
6 12:57 Negishi Park 2 laps I used self-talk and I think that helped my performance.
7 13:11 Negishi Park 2 laps I felt good after running but I could have pushed myself even more and achieved a better time.
Cross country day 11:12 Negishi Park 2 laps I was very pleased with my performance. I can honestly say that I tried my best and if I can keep running like this, I know that my best will gradually get better and better.
    Summary:
First Run: On the first run I thought i did reasonably well, but unfortunately I did not achieve my process goal which was to run the whole thing without stopping. When I ran I sprinted and the stopped which was a bad thing to do. I should have jogged the whole time to find out my pace when I run so I can evaluate it at the end and think about how I can improve. I was slacking and I didn’t try my best. I didn’t use any psychological techniques such as self-talk, which is probably why I didn’t run the whole way. At the end of the run I was not only tired, but I was also unsatisfied with my result.
Third Run:  I was pleased with my result and I got a better time than before. My outcome goal for this run was to finish the run in less than 13:10 minutes but even though I failed it, I came pretty close to succeeding and I achieved my process goal which was to run at least a whole lap without stopping. Just like the first run, I didn’t use any psychological techniques whether it be self talk, music or even an image in my mind. At the end I was happy because I improved my time but I know that I could have dome better.
Fourth Run: I was happy about my result on this run because it was the best time I have gotten yet. I couldn’t breathe at times but I did well. It was my first time to run the whole two laps without stopping and at the end I felt good about my performance. I think that this helped me realize my potential for improvement and how I could learn from my past mistakes to get better results each time.
Fifth Run: I was very disappointed with this run. This was my worst time I got in grade 8 and I think that part of that is due to the lack of confidence and motivation. On that day I was tired and hungry to begin with and I had no intentions of trying my best and improving on my goals. I had trouble breathing and I stopped a lot. I was very tired at the end because I didn’t eat breakfast that day.  I didn’t use any psychological techniques at all and my decision making was poor. For example I used a lot of my energy on the down hill slopes instead of letting myself go and using less energy, and because of that I got a bad time. by the end of the run I was wheezing and I didn’t manage to catch up with the faster people.
Sixth Run: For this run I did a lot of things different from the last run which helped me a lot. I was ready to run and I ate my breakfast and lunch properly. I also used self-talk and I think that helped my performance. Performance wise I was getting better and better but there was still some room for improvement and attitude wise, I could feel the positive change in my attitude as the finals were approaching. I learned a lot of things from this run. I learned the importance of having a good start because not only did it help me physically, but it also helped me mentally. Sprinting at the start gave me a confidence boost and it really helped me to keep my pace when running, and made me not worry about the opponents.
Seventh Run:  Because this was the last training run before the finals, I didn’t try anything new and I realized that was a good choice because I just wanted to jog in a more relaxed pace and try my best in the finals. Unfortunately I went a little to easy on myself, and ultimately all it did was hinder my performance and made me get a bad time. Even though I felt good after I ran, I was unsatiafied because I know that I am capable of doing better.
Cross Country Day:  I was very pleased with my performance. At the start I was very nervous but I did pretty good. I never knew I was capable of improving this much and I was pleasantly surprised when the teacher announced my time as well as everyone else’s on tuesday. I incorporated a lot of the skills and techniques that I learned throughout this unit. I used self talk and I ran in a relaxed pace but I still ran pretty fast.  I can honestly say that I tried my best and if I can keep running like this, I know that my best will gradually get better and better.
I would give myself a 6/8 for my performance in the unit because even though I didn’t try my best at the start during warm up and  running, in the end I understood how I can improve and worked on my running techniques and my time has improved drastically. It was a very fun experience for me and I hope to practice more to improve for next year
