Poem (:
God Says Yes To Me
Kaylin Haught
I asked God if it was okay to be melodramatic
and she said yes
I asked her if it was okay to be short
and she said it sure is
I asked her if I could wear nail polish
or not wear nail polish
and she said honey
she calls me that sometimes
she said you can do just exactly
what you want to
Thanks God I said
And is it even okay if I don’t paragraph
my letters
Sweetcakes God said
who knows where she picked that up
what I’m telling you is
Yes Yes Yes
I think the poem is about the speaker talking to the God and the God is responding to the question. When I saw the title, I thought that the speaker propose to the God and he/she said Yes, but when I read the poem I realized it was about God telling the speaker it is okay to be what ever you want. In a way, God sounds sarcastic when he reply’s to the question and also not caring. This is because God’s respond is always positive, like the God just want to move on with all the talking and not say anything negative so the god would not have to explain why it is not good to do that.
I think that one of the ideas/themes in the poem is loving the way you are because from their conversation I think the God is telling the speaker that you are perfect the way you are, since she/he is mentioning each part of herself asking if having, doing or being a part in her/he is okay. But like i said, the God sounds sarcastic and when you think he sounds sarcastic, i think the theme ‘loving the way you are’ changes into more of not telling them ‘love the way you are’ and more like ‘you should KNOW that you are perfect the way you are and there is no need for me to explain’.
I like the way that the poem uses the speaker’s questions not too serious (like about skin color, nationality, and your gender) that makes me know more about the speaker. How the speaker is probably a young student girl since she was asking the God if its okay to wear nail polish and if its okay not to paragraph the letters.
I’m not sure why in the poem the God responded ‘Sweetcakes’. I have a thought about the theme of the poem, but i want to know why the poet wrote this poem and what is it about.
The poem and all about the ‘loving yourself’ reminds me of a song called ‘Born This Way’ by Lady Gaga and ‘Who Says’ by Selena Gomez. Lady Gaga’s hits single ‘Born This Way’ reminds me of the poem, especially the part that says, ‘I’m beautiful in my way, Cause God makes no mistakes. I’m on the right track baby i was born this way!’. ’‘Who Says’ describes about how it doesn’t matter what people say about you, you are perfect the way you are, for an example, the part of her song which says ‘Who says you’re not star potential, Who says you’re not presidential, Who says you can’t be in movies. Listen to me listen to me. Who says you don’t pass the test, Who says you can’t be the best, Who said, who said? Would you tell me who said that, yeah. Who said’.

I liked how you added in an allusion towards the songs “Born This Way” and “Who Says”, and I agree that those two songs are somewhat similar to the theme of the poem which you wrote about in your concluding paragraph. In addition, I also agree that it is good that the person who was asking God all of those questions didn’t ask anything too major. Personally, I also liked how “God” was a “she: in the poem, since I have never read a poem, a book, or anything before that did this. And I do not understand where the “sweetcakes” thing came from too, and I wonder why the poet (Kaylin Haught) wrote that as well.

I agree with your approach to the poem. It is a nice poem and fun to read, and not like those usual poems with a very deep meaning. It is pretty obvious after the first read of the poem that it is by a teenage girl who has different questions for God and God answers them back in a casual way, agreeing to everything. I especially like the way you gave allusion to Selena Gomez’s Who Said as this kind of proves that even God says that you are perfect just the way you are.
And I really liked you analyzation as it was pretty narrative.(:
