How do empires effect us today?
When a “controller” country controls a “coloniser” country, they will share cultures which have an effect on us today. Music, culture, language, religion, food, laws of empires effects us. For example, when the Roman conquered Greece, music, theatre, art was shared. Empires colonize other countries for resources. Most of the time the colonized country nationalises. Eventually, the colonized country has to leave the country for reasons. Economical reasons is most common. When the resources that the empire wants is gone they have no reason to stay on the country. Another economical reason is that the empire starts declining and then they can’t afford to guard, buy food, build buildings, and many other things for the country.

What happens when one country controls another?

Q1. What happens when one country controls another?

An empire is a set of lands or regions that are ruled by an emperor or ruler. Usually the emperor will have governors and some others who each rule one land or region. An empire will usually also have many different cultures. Well-known empires include the the Roman Empire, the Russian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the British Empire. Today the only place to use the name “emperor” is the Emperor of Japan, although he is not powerful. When an Empire  takes over another country the country will become part of the empire.  The country will have to use some of the Empires cultures or the way of living. Great Britain conquered a lot of territories including Antarctica, and became the only superpower after 1815. The colonizers might also send what they don’t like to the colony that they conquered. For instance, Great Britain made Australia as a Penal Colony, which means that sent their prisoners to Australia. To finalize, there are more things when a country controls another country.

Q2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being an empire?

The advantage of being a empire is that they can rule and own territories. Also the empire can have strong armies and militaries, fight, conquer another country and expand their territories. They can give orders and tell the colonized country to do what they want. They can also influence their culture and spread their culture, religion, art, believes and many other things. For example, Great Britain had strong militaries so they conquered some parts in America. Another advantage is that they can do what they want to do, such as Great Britain. The disadvantage is that they have to work hard to keep up their strengths of keeping up their armies because if the colonized country and the colonizer gets in a fight and the colonizer doesn’t keep up with their strengths for fighting they would loose all the territories.

Q3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being an colony?

The advantage of being colonized is that they can get the colonizer’s culture. For example, India was colonized by the British Empire and now it helps because the global world uses English. Another advantage is that since there is a person in a higher hierarchy (emperor/empress) than the colony to protect them, so as a result, no countries will try to attack the colonies. However in the other hand, there are some disadvantages when you are a colony. The disadvantage of being colonized is that they have to obey the commands of the colonizer also, they have to memorize the colonizer’s language if they are forced to. For instance, you have to agree with what the emperor/empress says even if you disagree and don’t want to actually do it, such as migrating to another place, and going into the army and going to the war. Also, another disadvantage is that you have to learn other cultures from the colonizer, and using that culture too.

Overall, I learned a lot about empires during this unit and I can’t wait until the next unit

Reflection on Silk Road

Nile sunset

If you were a traveler on ancient the Silk Road, why would I want to stop in your city?

I wold stop in Kashgar because there are many kind people. I will feel safe I went there. It would also seem fun to see how the culture is different than mine.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your city?

One of the things that I thought was interesting was that Kashgar was the meeting point of the north and south sections of the Silk Road in China.

Would you want to visit your city today (in 2011?)  Why or why not?

Shure why not. I think its worth going to and there are lots of sites such as an ancient Pagoda In Kashgar, there are lots famous attractions such as Lake Karakuri, Mount Muztagata, Abakh Hoja Mosque, the Mor Pagoda which was built in the Tang dynasty (7th century), and many more.

How does the physical geography of your place affect the culture of the people who lived in your city?

In the past, Kashgar spoke Mandarin Chinese but modern Kashgar speaks turkish as well as other foreign languages. This is because they traded with a lot of European cities and countries.

How do you think your research of your city can help answer the question, “What Happens When East Meets West?”

I think the culture from each cities will be different and the recourses will also be different such as I had wool and a different city had gold.

Explain what happened in the String Silk Road.

Ms. Madrid made papers with information about the country that you chose. I was with Keigo and we got Kashgar. We had a string and with that we threw it to other groups pretending that we were actually trading with these cities

How did the String Silk road game help answer the question, what happens when East Meets West?

Kate and Emily’s group was in the middle, and it looked like it was really busy, because they were holding loads of strings. It means that the middle city is the most busy place in economy.

Skits and stories

On our first night in Hakuba, we stayed in tents. Late at night, my tent friends told each other scary stories. I think this is one of my good ones but I’m not sure if it goes like this: In America there was a crazy murder going around the neighbourhood. Police went to investigate. Trying not to tread on the bodies, they took pictures of each one. One policeman saw something written on the opposite wall but he couldn’t read it. He walks over to it and sees the numbers “7734″ written in blood. When taking pictures of this, he turned his camera upside-down and told an approaching police officer. When he pointed with the hand that the camera was in, he accidentally took a picture of the upside-down numbers. He was about to delete the picture when he realized something. The numbers were now a word. The word was “hELL.”7734_hell All my friends were really scared. Then it was my friends turn but we got bored of scary stories so we changed to funny stories. I talked aboutcottoncandy fairies and cottencandy  land and crazy stuff like that but then I got tired so we went to sleep. Few days later we all had to perform our skits to the grade!!! My groups skit was about a really mean teacher that hates the kids and so they turn the teacher into a lady than lady cant stop talking about Or-Gans!Then they turn the teacher into a baby and then a ballet teacher, teacher that is a raps and finally a mad scientist. The scientist makes a time machine and travels to the future. When we arrived there was an old man and he looked like one of the students so he asks, “What is your name Mister?” The old man responds “Axel Larson (the students name) then he faints. Then the old man tells the other student ” I remember the day when I turned my teacher into a mad scientist and suddenly the mad scientist screams, “We are in the future” the old man said its you oh my gosh its you!!! ahhhhh.” The mad scientist was all confused and said, ” What was that all about? Anyways let’s go.” Then they went to the past and there were in the time when there were was the homo Erectus. Then the mad scientist started fighting with one. In the end they travel back to school and every thing was normal even the teacher. The teacher brings the kids to the principals office. suddenly the principle acts all strange and in real its a homo Erectus. Axel and Michael were the students, George was the old man and Neil was the homo Erectus and I was The Ballet, Rapper and Lady teacher and the baby and the mad scientist. Thanks to my team we were number 1 yay and i also liked my friends skit.
