  2. English Poetry Presentations Feedback…

    December 14, 2012 by 17jacobsn

In our class this week we presented a presentation on a poem that we found on a US Library of Congress’s Poetry 180 website. We all had to choose one poem from any author and then think about what the author of the poem ment by writing this poem and we also had to compare our poem with a quote  painting, another poem etc. We and 8A were very lucky classes because last week on friday Holly Thompson came to our school and talked about poetry we had to write our own poem and I think that this workshop really helped me and probably some others with their presentations. We all got put into 5 groups of 4 people and we had what they well and what they did. We also had to choose one person that we wanted to look at. In my group is Kai, Axel, Katie, and I. The person that I chose by my self was Eva.

The presenters that we had to compare:

Kai – “Leaving the Island” by Linda Pastan

Kai’s presentation was very well done in my point of view. He started his presentation of by read his poem “Leaving the Island” and he had a picture of a island which represented the poem very well. After he finished reading the poem he talked a little bit of what he thought the author was trying to say through this poem. He choose some very interesting parts of the poem that he analysed parts that I didn’t quite understand so he made it more clearer to me. He compared his poem to a poem that he wrote him self and I thought that was very nice and very unique because the poem was very well written and it matched the meaning of his poem that he chose. Kai had very nice and not to messy slides and he did a very well job. The only thing that he could really improve is he spoke really quiet and fast so it was very hard to understand.

The Poem “LEAVING THE ISLAND” by Linda Pastan:

We roll up the rugs and strip the beds by rote,
Summer expires as it has done before.
The ferry is no simple pleasure boat

Nor are we simply cargo, though we’ll float
Alongside heavy trucks – their stink and roar.
We roll up rugs and strip the beds by rote.

This bit of land whose lines the glaciers wrote
    Becomes the muse of memory once more;
The ferry is no simple pleasure boat.

    I’ll trade my swimsuit for a woolen coat;
The torch of autumn has but small allure.
We roll up rugs and strip the beds by rote.

The absences these empty shells denote
Suggest the losses winter has in store.
The ferry is no simple pleasure boat.

    The songs of summer dwindle to one note;
The fog horn’s blast (which drowns this closing door.)
We rolled up rugs and stripped the beds by rote.
The ferry is no simple pleasure boat.

Axel – “Radio” by Loral Blossom

Axel had very good picture representing his poem and presentation. He had a very clear and loud voice which you could hear to the end of the class room. His presentations slides were very eye catching and also very bight and colorful. He compared this poem to a personal experience from when he was little. He used some expressions that we learned with Holly Thompson when she came to school. I thought that comparing a poem with a personal experince is very interesting because you hear something about a burglary or something but when it happend to you, you feel very different. He did a very good job on analysing what the poet was trying to say because he went in to the very depth even though the poem has very short stansa’s he looked into the poem and tried to read what was behind the words. He had very well structured slide because he chose picture that weren’t to unappropriate and he structure his slides very well by not having to much text on one slide except for the slide were his poem was on.

Here is the poem “RADIO” by Loral Blossom:

    No radio
    in car

    No radio on board

    No radio
    Already stolen

    Absolutely no radio!

    Radio broken
    Alarm is set
    To go off

    No radio
    No money

    No radio
    no valuables

    No radio or
    valuables
    in car or trunk

    No radio
    Stolen 3X

    No radio
    Empty trunk
    Empty glove compartment
    Honest

    In car
    Nothing of value

    No radio
    No nuthin
    (no kidding)

    Radio Broken
    Nothing Left!

    Radio Gone
    Note Hole in Dashboard

    Warning!
    Radio Will Not Play
    When Removed
    Security Code Required

    Would you keep
    Anything valuable
    In this wreck?

    No valuables
    In this van

    Please do not
    Break-in
    Unnecessarily

    Thank you
    For your kind
    Consideration

    Nothing of value
    in car
    No radio
    No tapes
    No telephone

Katie – “The Bat” by Theodore Roethke

Katie had a excellent presentations she had a lot of information and explained everything that she had to in very deep depth. She started her presentation by reading her poem. She read the poem very clear and not to fast so you could understand what she was saying. She also designed her slide super well she put her poem in her slide showand designed the slide in a way so it was related to what she was saying. Throughout her whole presentation her slides were very well structured and very creative and related to what she was saying. After reading her poem she started to compare the “The Bat” with a poem that she picked of the internet called “Wolf Pack”. She talked a lot about these two poems by saying a lot about the connections between the two poems and that even though they have some connections she also talked about how wolves and bats are very unique creatures and quite different from one another. After she compared and had read her poem she got into analysing the poem “The Bat” and taking some interesting stanzas, and words that she thought were very interesting to her and she explained it in not so much depth but in such a depth so it wasn’t to long so it would get boring. She ended her presentation in a very interesting way, she asked the class a question: “If you had to choose would you rather spend a night with a pack of wolves or many bats. This I thought was a very interesting way to end the presentation because you have to think about it and it shows the presenter if her audience was listening or not. Even though at first Katie seemed a little nervous that she might screw up she presented her presentation very well and in a nice and understandable depth. It was very clear to me that katie came very prepared. Over all I really liked Katie’s presentation not only becasue it was obvious that she came prepared but also because her slide were very eye catching and not to messy.

The poem “THE BAT”  by Theodore Roethke

By day the bat is cousin to the mouse.
He likes the attic of an aging house.

His fingers make a hat about his head.
His pulse beat is so slow we think him dead.

He loops in crazy figures half the night
Among the trees that face the corner light.

But when he brushes up against a screen,
We are afraid of what our eyes have seen:

For something is amiss or out of place
When mice with wings can wear a human face.

Eva – “Tuesday 9:00 AM” by Denver Butson

Eva also like Katie did an excellent job in presenting the poem presentation. Eva also started of reading here poem to the class and personally while she read it I thought that this poem must have been probably one of the most difficult poems that people had chosen because in this poem there is so much going on like a man that is on fire, a lady who is drowning, another lady who is freazing to death and a man that was being mauled to death by wild dogs. Eva analyzied these 4 things that happens to the people at the bus stop with natural disaster such as the man who was on fire with a Volcano eruption, the lady who was drowning with a Tsunami, the other lady who was freaking to death with a Blizard and the man who was being mauled to death by wild dogs with an Earthquake she also thought that these 4 thing might also be emotions that people have (Fire = Angry, Drowning = Sad/Crying, Freazing = Sad/ Lonley and Mauled to death by wild dogs = Also Angry). I thought the the analysations that Eva did were very clever. She compared this poem to a phrase the a very known scientist used to say his name was Albert Einstein and she compared the poem “Tuesday 9:00AM” with phrase “the world is a dangerous place. Not because of the people who are evil but because of the people who don’t do anything about it”. This quote from Albert Einstein was a very nice touch to Eva’s presentation. Even though this is a difficult poem to analyise, compare, and understand eva did a excelent job presenting it, you could really see that she rehearsed her presentation and I also thought that she used very appropriate pictures in her presentation.

The Poem “TUESDAY 9:00 AM” by Denver Buston

A man standing at the bus stop
reading the newspaper is on fire
    Flames are peeking out
from beneath his collar and cuffs
His shoes have begun to melt

    The woman next to him
wants to mention it to him
    that he is burning
    but she is drowning
    Water is everywhere
    in her mouth and ears
    in her eyes
    A stream of water runs
    steadily from her blouse

Another woman stands at the bus stop
    freezing to death
She tries to stand near the man
    who is on fire
to try to melt the icicles
that have formed on her eyelashes
    and on her nostrils
to stop her teeth long enough
    from chattering to say something
to the woman who is drowning
but the woman who is freezing to death
    has trouble moving
with blocks of ice on her feet

It takes the three some time
    to board the bus
    what with the flames
    and water and ice
But when they finally climb the stairs
    and take their seats
    the driver doesn’t even notice
that none of them has paid
    because he is tortured
    by visions and is wondering
if the man who got off at the last stop
was really being mauled to death
    by wild dogs.

  3. Presenting Naked Tech Reflection

    December 2, 2012 by 17jacobsn

    Hey World,

Over the past few weeks in tech we learned about how to present naked. Presenting naked is when you talk about a topic without cue cards or notes. First we were investigating on presenting naked.  I learned that there are many types of presentation ways such as pecha kucha, ignite presentations, RSA and TED presentations. For a good presentation you also need to make your presentation very well organized and your slide should be that if the audience looks at your slide that they know exactly what they are talking about. I learned about the 7 steps to building up a presentation (1. Gather your supplies, 2. Write down your thoughts, 3. Arrange your story, 4. Design your story, 5. Put it all together, 6. Create the handout, and 7. Practice makes perfect {Last Step!!!}).

In this unit I had some weaknesses and some strengths. I think that one of my main weaknesses was that in the investigation stage I found it a little hard to realize the main difference between all the different type of way how to present naked pecha kucha, ignite…I think that one of my main strength are to design all the sildes and make them easy to understand.

In conclusion I think if I got to do this project again I would like to memorize my speech a little better and choose a different topic because after doing Photography as my topic is a little hard.

  4. Art Reflection

    December 1, 2012 by 17jacobsn

In art over the past 10 weeks or so we have been learning about abstract art. In every unit there is a unit question for this unit it was “What makes art attractive?” We looked at many different abstract paintings from famous abstract painters such as Jackson Pollock, Kenneth Noland, Frank Stella etc. We learned what hard edge and different types of painting techniques. We had a lot of time to plan and try a lot of different techniques in out art journals. I was inspired by Frank Stella because I really like to draw hard edge paintings and I tried really hard to use shapes and painted it hard. I used shapes because I found that in a lot Frank Stella’s paintings he uses shapes.

During this unit I definatly had many weaknesses and some strength. My weaknesses that I have found was that while I was planning I found it a little hard to analyze all of the different artists and find a difference between them. I also found it hard to plan out my final art piece. This is because since I was inspired by Frank Stella I found it hard because since Frank Stella uses a lot of shapes so I wanted to use a shape that Frank Stella had not used before. There was one thing in this project that wasn’t really my weakness or my strength but when painting my final abstract painting I found it kind of challenging to paint my painting in a nice and blod kind of way. This was especially at the edges becasue this is were most times I tend to paint in the next space. My Strength during this project was was that in class when we painted some abstract paintings for our investiagting stage I found this very interesting because I got to see the differences between the different types of abstract painting and then it was easier for me to choose what type of abstract painting I would like to do because of this I was inspired by Frank Stella. Another strength of mine was that after I had planed out my final painting. I drew triangles in random places all over the paper and then I chose the colors that I thought that would fit well together. I chose a red, light blue, yellow and green, in each of the the colors I added a little bit of white in all of the colors. Then I used a little bit of of each color of paint and then I put a little bit of color in each space.

Planing out what magazine picture that I would like...

In class we looked at many different types of abstract artists and each one of these artist had a different abstract painting type. I really enjoyed getting to try out many artist ideas. Next time if I would have the choice to redo my abstract painting I would like to choose a more loose brush stock paintings like my classmates Kate and Eva did because then I can see the difference between them. I think that this would be good for me so that I don’t only like hard edge paintings.

Over all I learned a lot in this unit one of the main points that I learned was that art can come in many differnt ways, before this unit I always thought that art had to have a image or a meaning behind it, but I learned that even just splashing paint all over your canvas is called painting.

  5. Drama Reflection: Status Performance…

    December 1, 2012 by 17jacobsn

In drama we had to get in to pairs and we had to come up with a situation and then preforme it (eg. buying a car or in the airplane). My partner was Amanda. Our situation that we chose that I was a mother and Amanda was my child and I grounded her because she didn’t clean up her room that I asked her to and she asked if it was ok if she could go to a party.

What is the skill(s) I used?

Some of the skills that I used was that I looked at some movies and I always looked at how a mother acts. Then I talked to Amanda and we both tried to put what we had research in to one whole act.

How did I approach creating the character? Was it successful- if so, how?

I approched this character by really well because I think that it was just like in a real house where a mother has a conversation with a child.

What needed improvement? Make a suggestion?

I think that there really did need some improvements, like maybe we could have planed it out a little more and we could practice this a little more. If we would have done this is could have probably been a little realistic.

How can I use these skills in performance?

I think that I can use these skills if I am ever playing a mother in a play.

  6. Grade 8 Drama Character Formative

    December 1, 2012 by 17jacobsn

In drama we had to get in to pairs and we had to come up with a place (Mc Donalds, etc.). My partner was Katie. Our place that we chose was the hairdesser. I was a kind hyper kind of crazy hair dresser and Katie was the costomer.

What is the skill(s) I used?

During this small time I was think of how a hair dresser would act and what kind of thing you do in a hair saloon like washing the hair, cutting the hair or coloring the hair. I tried fitting all these techniques with a mime kind of thing since we didn’t have any props. Katie and I then put this all together and then we practiced it a few times and then we had to preform.

How did I approach creating the character? Was it successful- if so, how?

I tried really putting myself into a hairdressers shoes and I was tring realy hard to act like a hair dresser. I think that the way I was acting like a hairdresser could have been better when I was inviting Katie to the hair saloon.

What needed improvement? Make a suggestion?

I think what needed improvement is that we could have done the scene a little bit longer and showed very close detail to where we were. Next time we could spend a little more time on practicing and thinking a little more and maybe research a little more on how to preform as a hairdresser. As a suggestion I next I would comunicate a little more and research a little more on hair saloons or hair dressers.

How can I use these skills in performance?

I can use these skills in a performance because then if I do use these skills such as researching a little more on hair dressers. Also I would use these skills because then you can make a more realistically hair dressers.

Here is the preformance of me and Katie:

  7. Cross Country Running

    November 19, 2012 by 17jacobsn

Cross Country occurs once a year where all the grades from 3rd to 12th grade go to Negishi park and run. From middle school you would need to run two laps (about 2.8km). This was last week. We had some practices before. In the practices after we ran we would write down our heart rate to see how fast it went back to the normal heart rate speed.

    1. Please complete the following form with your data.

    Fred Zoe                     Nerissa
Heart Rate at Rest 80 beats per minute 60 beats per minute  65 beats per minute
    HR after run 160 160  18
    HR 30s after run 160 150  23
    HR 60s after run 155 148  22
    HR 90s after run 151 142  22
    HR 120s after run 147 136  21
    HR 150s after run 143 130  19
    HR 180s after run 138 125  18

    2. Please create a graph that represents your data.

    Heart Rate after Running

    3. Why is your HR high when your body is working? (give a detailed answer in 1 paragaph).

Your heart rate depends on the blood pressure and on the cardic output (Meaning: blood volume in liters pumped by the left ventricle of the heart per minute). Also when your heart rate is usually higher when your body is working because usually when you are running your body has to keep up and pump blood through your body. If you are running your heart pump blood a lot quiker so the blood still has the cycle going through your body if your heart would go at the same speed pumping blood through your body you would probaly faint. Another point is that if you are a fit person your heart is more used to being active so your heart doesn’t need to pump as much blood through your body as if you are not such a fit person. All this meaning that the more blood pressure there is the more your heart has to work which makes your heart rate go higher.

    4. You can see that your HR goes down after exercise. Please compare Fred’s data with Zoe’s. Which runner is fitter (fred or zoe)? Give a detailed reason why you think this (1 small paragraph).

If I look at the chart above and I think that Zoe is fitter because her heartrate goes down a lot quiker to a slower heart rate while fred’s heart rate kind of at the beggining stays the same for about 30s after he ran. Zoe’s heart rate goes down faily quikely so that after about 3 minutes it went down by 35.

    THANK YOU :)

  8. 5 Days Hokkaido

    November 15, 2012 by 17jacobsn

Four weeks ago our whole grade went to Hokkaido for field studies. Field studies happens once a year when the whole middle and high school go somewhere in Japan (except for 9th grade they got a exception and got to go to Puket, Thailand) for one whole school week (5 days). Today I am going to tell you all about my adventures in Hokkaido. I am going to tell you all the things from day 1 to day 5.

Before I am going to start I want to tell you all the AOI (Area of Interection) for each day: (Click on the Link to look at the AOI)

    • For the first day my AOI is going to be Comunity & Service because I am telling you all about how I was picking up all the trash from everyone.
    • For the second day my AOI is going to be Comunity & Service because we were helping this Japanese farmer dismantling the garden
    • For the third day my AOI is going to be Human Ingenuity because I am telling you all about the concequences that can happen when there’s a lot of rain and it makes a teacher almost blind.
    • For the fourth day my AOI is going to be Human Ingenuity because I was caring of Michael when he got hit by that log.
    • For the fifth day my AOI is going to be Approaches to Learning because I am writing about how this week has been and how I learned how tiring some small activities can be and I learned a lot this week.

    Day 1:

Today it was finally the start of field studies! I woke up late because my alarm didn’t go off so I woke up at 6:30. It was too late to meet at YCAT. My mum drove my sister and her friend to school very quickly, because they also went to Hakuba for field studies. Then my mum drove me to Haneda Airport. I arrived at Haneda airport about 2 minutes late. I ran into the airport and started looking for my classmates. I finally found my classmates and ran to them. I got my plane ticket and we started to check in our bags. We went to the security check. We only had 30 minutes left before we had to board the plane. Then the fun started, we entered into the plane and “Hello Hokkaido”. After we arrived in Hokkaido we had a 2 hour bus ride to goto NAC (Niseko Adventure Centre). When we arrived at NAC we had lunch. The NAC made us burgers. They were delicious!!! After lunch we started to hike to the campsite where we were going to spend our first night. The hike was about 8 KM long and took us about 2 hours. I had an awesome time. During the hike many people started to drop trash to the ground and I picked all the trash that I found on the way, in the end I had 3 pet bottles and few scraps of gum and candy wrappers. When we got to the campsite it was just before the dawn so we had to hurry. We spilt up in to two group those who wanted to cook and those who wanted to put up the tents. I chose to put up tents. I started to put up the tent and when I was finished I helped people that weren’t just finished and needed help. It was already dark when we put up the last tents. We had dinner around 6. The ratatouille was very delicious. Then some people went to the onsen that was about 5 minutes away. The others went to their tents. My tent mates for this night were Eva, Daniella, Jennifer, Shiho, and Aude. Good Night!!!

    Day 2:

When I woke up today all of the people in my tent were already awake.  We played BS for around an hour, by then all the other tents around us were already awake. The people at NAC made us breakfast. It was like a buffet we had to make our own sandwiches. After the breakfast some people had to do the dishes. Then we cleaned up our tents and packed our bags after that all of 8th grade went hiking up to the ski mountain. I didn’t go because my feet really hurt because I have flat feet so I stayed with Mr. Duffield and Shiho. Shiho didn’t go either because she had a really big blister which really hurt. While all the others went on thier hike I stayed in the tent and listen how Shiho practiced her speach contest and Mr. Duffield is her coach for this event. After the others got back from thier hike we had some time to chill out. Then finally the day got started! We got into the NAC bus and drove to HIS Niseko (Hokkaido International School in Niseko). HIS has two parts of school the large part of the school is located in Sapporo and the smaller part of the HIS is in Niseko. We went to the one in Niseko. There we met Mr. Reynolds (a old YIS teacher) and we ate lunch there and had a lot of time to play outside. For lunch we had burgers. As soon as everyone was done and we all played. After we finished to play we started to make our way to the Japanese high school, there we made some japanese flower arrangements and got to take them home. After our short time of making the japanese flower arrangments we got back into the NAC bus and drove to a japanese lady who had a large farm. We helped her dismantle her green house, then after all 4 greenhouses were dismantled we got to carve pumkins for halloween. Some of us got to take the carved pumkins but only those who had very small pumkins and ones that weren’t to heavy to take on the plane. This took about two hours and then finally we got closer to go to the hotel. We went back to NAC to pick up our suitcases. We ate dinner at NAC. For dinner I got tofu steaks. They were so delicious!!! Then finally we got to go to the hotel where we are going to spend the last three nights. In the hotel we had 6 rooms. 2 rooms were for the girls and 4 for the boys. Each girl room had 11 people. My roommates are Eva, Daniella, Shiho, Emily Van Borstle, Touko, May, Hye-Won, Katie, Ellen, Kate and Amanda. The hotel’s name is Kanro no mori (かんろ の もり). When we got there we had about an hour to go to the onsen and then at around 8 we had to all met in the meeting hall to write our diaries and talk about the next days. Then at 10 it was LIGHT’S OUT.

    Day 3:

Today we finally got started with doing the activities that we are going to do for the next two day. We got split up into two groups. Group 1 and group 2. I got put into group 1. Each group had around 30 people. Since I am in group 1 we went kayaking, then tomorrow group 1 is going mountain biking and river rafting. We had to be in the dining room. The food there is dilicious. The breakfast was buffet this moring I ate salad, yogurt and hashbrown. It was very hard to find food that I can eat there because I can not eat some things because I have alergies, in the breakfast buffet was mainly fish and meat and very oily food. To deal with this problem I only the food that I could eat as much as I could. Then we again went to NAC. There we split up into our groups and group 1 went to the back to put on the drysuits and booties. Then we got into the NAC bus. The bus ride took about 1 and a half hour. We finally arrived at Lake Toya and we had to pair up for the kayaks. My partner was Touko. I sat in the frount and touko in the back of the kayak. We kayaked to a small island in the middle of the lake. It was very difficult because our kayak was kind of broken so we had some trouble getting to the island. There were three group that came dead last and they were Ken and Kenneth’s group, Micheal and Hemanth’s group and mine. In the middle of the way to the island it started to rain really hard which made the kayaking a lot harder. On the island it was still raining really hard and on that island we ate some wraps for lunch and drank some hot tea to warm. Since I was in one of those groups that came last to the island Ms Holovecz and Mr. Pomeroy said that it is best if the three groups split up and partner up with someone a lot faster. My new partner was Ms. Holovecz. Once we were out on the lake we had the same problems again with our kayak and also this time we had another large problem, the second problem was that since it was raining Ms. Holovecz’s glasses got all foged uped. This was very bad because Ms. Holovecz is astigmatism. So she was helping a lot with the strong pedalling but since our router was broken we kept on going in circles until one of the nice NAC japanese assistant tied his helpers rope to our kayak and lead us the correct way to shore. At the beginning it was kind of hard to get the japanese assistant to tie his rope to our kayak. We tried telling him that our router was broken and that Ms. Holovecz couldn’t see but the japanese assistent could understand us.  He would just laugh at us trying to show him what we meant. The most challenging part about having a almost blind teacher in the back of my kayak. We were slowly making our way back to the shore and while we were being lead from the assistent we thought that it would be nice if we also peddled with him so we would get to the shore faster, but we kept on peddling in a zig zag lines and we just couldn’t stop laughing. We were the last ones to reach the shore but about 10 meters before the shore end the japanese assistent let us go and he told us that we had to go back to the shore by ourselves. This was so hilarious we still kept on going in zig zag lines the end we nearly reached the shore when we drove into a tree that was hanging over the water very low. Then finally we got out of our kayaks and got out of our drysuits. The bus was so nice and heated up that I got warm pretty quickly. We drove back to the NAC centre which again took about 1 and a half hours. Once we arrived the other group had arived before us and some were playing chess others were playing cards and others were just reading. For dinner we had pasta, salad and some potatoes. We drove back to the hotel and went to the onsen and bought some snaks because tonight was going to be the movie night. We all had to meet in the meeting hall at around 7 or 8 and we got to choose the movie. We ended up watching the movie “Eragon”. It was very good and I would like to see it again. Once the movie was over I was very tired and was happy to finally be able to go to sleep.

    Day 4:

Today is very similar to yesterday except that group 2 goes kayaking today and group 1 is going mountain biking and water rafting. I am really looking forward to water rafting. Since last year was the first time that I went water rafting I have loved it a lot. We all woke up around 6:30 and got dressed and waited for the teachers to tell us that we were allowed to go and get breakfast from the buffet. While we waited for the teacher we started to pack our day packs with the appropriate things for the day. I packed my rain suit spear clothes and my money. The teachers came around 7:00 and we all went to the dining room one after the other. We ate our breakfast and went back to our room and grabbed our daypacks and brushed our teeth. We started to board to bus that took us to the NAC center. The bus ride took around 20 minutes. Once we got to the NAC center again we split up into our group but this time group 2 went to the back to get the wet suits while group 1 waited for group 2 to get into their busses. While we were waiting a guide told us what we were going to have to expect today. After around 10 minutes we got into our wetsuits and boarded a bus and went to Shiribetso river. The river was so beautiful. We got put into small groups at the NAC center and we had to find our group and choose a water rafting boat that we were going to use. I was in a group with Eva, Daniella, Amanda, Emily Van Borstle and Michael. Before we were allowed to put our water raft into the water we had to go over some basic safety routines. We got into the water raft and practiced what it would be like if we were about to hit a rock, or how we are supposed to hold paddles, and what the different call out ment. Once we practiced that for a few times we were finally ready to go into the river. We all had to carry the water raft to the river. It was heavy. Once we got started we all started to sing nursery rhymes like “Twinkle, Twinkle little star” or “ABC”. We were water rafting a while when the teachers said that we were allowed to go into the water. Another group took over our ship and pushed Michael overboard. I help Micheal get on board and he was still dry. We went further and suddenly I noticed that we were coming towards to a big log that was sticking out into the water. I got down quickly before I was going to get hit. The only bad thing was that our guide didn’t see the login time and Michael didn’t get down in time and got hit. I asked if he was ok and he was ok and was happy that he had a helmet on. Our water rafting took around an hour to two hours. Finally when we got to shore I was so happy because my hands were frozen. We went up a small hill where our busses were parked we got out of our drysuits and if necessary we got to change into dry clothes. Once we were done we got into our bus and drove to a bus rest place where we all ate lunch everyone had Soba noodles and I because of my allergies I got avocado sushi’s they were delicious. After we ate we got to go shopping for about an hour in the bus rest place I bought some souvenirs for my family. After an hour we went back to the place where we stopped water rafting and started to go mountain biking. But before we got to go mountain biking our mountain biking trainers showed us how to properly go down a hill. You lean back with your bottom, then you stand up on your bike and press the break for the back break. Once we practiced this twice the counselors told us that we were going to bike up Yoteisan (A.K.A Esofuji) and then to the NAC centre. While we were biking we kept on stopping a few times. I had to stop half way because my foot got caught in my chain. The whole time while we were cycling there was a bus behind us to collect all the people that couldn’t go any further. After about 10KM (Out of 25KM) I stopped. Once we were nearly at the NAC centre the counselors told the others that were still cycling that they were not going to be able to make it to the NAC centre before sundown. Once we arrived at the NAC centre we started to play some cards with Eva, Daniella, James, Michael and I. We played cards for about 1 hour 30 minutes until the other group arrived from kayaking. We ate our last dinner ate the Nac centre I ate some rice with salad. After dinner we thanked the NAC centre for spending the whole week with us and the NAC centre thanked us for being here in Hokkaido and told us that they would be happy if we come again to hokkaido to stop by the NAC centre. Then we left to our hotel and were allowed to go to the onsen one last time. After the onsen some of us started to pack our bags and met in the meeting hall and people performed the skits and sang song and had a fun last night at the hotel and in Hokkaido. Then again at 10 Ms. Leathem came around and told us to switch off our lights and go to sleep.

    Day 5:

Today was our last day in Hokkaido we all woke up pretty early like around 6 o’clock. I got up and got dressed and went to the dining room to eat breakfast because I didn’t know if I wanted to go into the onsen for one last time. Luckily for me I had finished packing my bags the night before so I didn’t needed to worry about that anymore. I decided that I didn’t want to go to the onsen anymore so I just packed the last few items on my list and waited for the others to finish eating. While the others were still eating I hung around with Shiho and Daniel because they also woke up early but went to the onsen. I cleaned up my futon (a Japanese padded quilt, laid on the floor and it is used as a bed) in a nice and neat file in the corner of our room. At around 10 the busses started to arrive which would take us to the airport. I sat with Eva, Rishi and Kate in the back row. Later on James joined us. We stopped at the same bus stop as when we came to Hokkaido and I bought some Japanese cakes. We arrived at the airport and Mr. Pomeroy went to get our tickets. He noticed that there was going to be a long line to check in our bags so he said that we may not have that much time to eat lunch. We got in to the line and waited around 1 hour to check in our bags. Some people left their luggage with their friends while they went to get something to eat and then they switched. Finally we all got our bags checked in and Mr. Pomeroy said that we still had around 20 minutes to get something to eat for lunch. I went to look for something to eat and we all had to meet by a bear by the elevator. We boarded the plane at around 2:30 and we left for Haneda, Yokohama. I was not so happy about leaving Hokkaido after a week of a lot of fun but I was looking forward to go home because a week after exhausting activities I was pretty tired. In the plane I was sitting in the middle seat row next to Mr. Duffield and Touko. Again the plane took around 1 and a half hours. After we landed in Haneda airport we picked up our luggage and parents were waiting for their kids. We split up into 3 groups. The 1st group were people who left for Tokyo from Haneda, the 2nd group were picked up by their parents and the last group were people who when by YCAT (a bus that travels from stations to airports. I was in the group that went by YCAT back to Yokohama station. When we got outside there were some of us were very lucky because there was one bus that was just about to leave and all the others were a little further back of us so only five of us got to go on that bus. The bus ride took around 40 minutes and I was glad that I was almost at home. It was a long but exciting week but I was so tired by the end of the week. I was very happy that there was another whole week where we got to chillax and rest.

  9. Japanese Poem (Japa Poem)

    November 7, 2012 by 17jacobsn

    Hi Guys,

In Japanese class we have been writting japanese poems about ourselves. Here is my final draft of my japanese poem:

    Translation of my Poem:

    I am kind often

    I try to push myself

I am learning Japanese and French

I can speak 3 different languages

    I am annoying

    I am loud

I am not tall and not short

    I get distracted very easily

    I have blue green eyes

    I am 156m tall

    I am from Germany

    I have dark brown hair

    I don’t like carrots

    I don’t like fish

    I am terrified of earthquakes

    I don’t like hot weather

    I like reading books

    I like to swim

    I like to play volleyball

    I like snow

I would like to play the guitar

I would like to go to Hawaii

I would like to go to LA

I would like to play tennis

    Rationale:

I think that the hardest part of writing this poem was find good adjectives that best represent me. Also another hard part was that while writing the poem and I didn’t know a word in japanese I had to look it up in the online dictionary but the hard part was finding the correct japanese word when there were more than one to choose from. The easy part on writing this poem was after writing the poem in english translating the english into japanese especially the words that I already know. Next time if I were to do it again I would like to use more advanced volcabulary and more Kanji.

    Thank You!!! :)
