Drama Speech Reflection

  • First of all, above is my Drama Speech, about holidays. My topic is about going to Ishigakijima with my friend Kento. I am going to reflect myself based on my progress on the speech.
  • In our first week in the Unit, we had a 10 minute discussion about what makes a good conversation. As we talked, I started to understand the basic conversations, as well how to create a god conversation. Next lesson, we had our first practice speech. It was considered as a fun activity, and it was a 1 minute one. My topic was water, and I talked about why dogs drink water and not coke or soda. As the Unit progressed, I increased my understanding towards speech, as well as various things we learned about. We watched some videos, and we were able to expand our knowledge about hooks, etc. We also had some opportunities to practice the speeches. In the second practice speech, I was probably very nervous, so I think I did not make a very good speech. On the final speech….. Never mind, I will talk about it in the reflection later.
  • Describe the progress have you made so far. You are encouraged to compare/contrast it to your first speech.
  • I think I made a good progress varying my tone and modulation, enlivening the speech. In my final speech, in the first part, I noticed myself varying the tone when asking a question, compared to somewhere different. I think I was able to vary my tone, and not make the speech boring and tiring. In my first practice speech, I was also able to use a hook to catch more attention from the audience.
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses in your final speech?
  • My strengths are my tones, just as mentioned before. I was able to change my tones in various occasions, such as in the hook, conclusion, and the middle of the speech. I gave an impact to the audience by changing the tone. My weakness, is that I had some word mistakes. One is that I was very nervous, but the main reason, is that I was not very ready making the cue cards, and I did not put the important parts in the cue card.
  • Is your speech successful? Why or why not?
  • I think my speech was successful, because I think I covered the basics of the skills in speech. I was able to vary my tone and enliven the speech. I was also able to talk in a loud voice, (not too loud) so that the audience would not miss words. It is because if one word misses, the speech might get confused and it would not be a good presentation.
  • What could you do to further improve your process and speech
  • I would like to use more sophisticated language, decrease fillers, and start using advanced skills. Decreasing fillers is probably the easiest thing to fix up. If there were no fillers, it would definitely be a better speech. Then, more sophisticated language is important to give a meaning to the audience. Start using advanced skills, is very important to increase the level of the speech as well.
  • Lastly, thanks to Mr. Curkovic for organizing the unit!!

Man or Machine?

Man or Machine?

It depends.

For Machine – They can complete jobs and tasks in various conditions such as in fire. One example is that little robots are working near the nuclear plants and are moving things from dangerous parts to safe places.

For Man – Although machines are very smart and rapid, humans are the one who created those machines, so it means that humans are smarter than the machines. Humans have to the creativity to create things such as artworks, as well as the machines. Although machines have no feelings, humans can express their feelings to tell something. Humans have the power to think, and if something does not work, they will try to think of a new idea. Robots will just try the same thing. Machines continuously have to use electricity, and sometimes it is a total waste of electricity which is one kind of finite resources. For example, when calculating, when machines use a lot of electricity, humans would be probably using paper and pencil.

List all the machines you have used in the last 24 hours.

Computer, Television, Wii, Refrigerator, iPhone, iPod Touch, lights, Wireless network, pencil sharpener, heater

Is art more or less important than machines?  Explain your answer.

It depends. Art shows creativity and it is a symbol of the creativity and ideas of humans. Machines are made to do jobs and complete tasks faster than humans, and complete jobs that are dangerous for humans to complete.

Chose the top 3 machines that you couldn’t live without.  Justify your answer.

1.Computer

Computer is needed for educational purposes and for network-interactions such as mail. In school we have to use computers to complete tasks and create things on the computer.

2.iPhone

Not necessarily iPhone, but phones are very important in my life. Phones are useful to contact with friends to notify them. (to Skype or to go to somewhere) A phone is really useful to tell where you are and whether you are safe or not. (to your family etc.)

3.Lights

Lights are really important, because they “light” the dark and make somewhere bright. Light have to be on because if you have no lights, you would not be able to see well, and for instance trip over something. So lights are really important to increase eye-sight.

List three jobs that are done by machines that used to be done by humans.

1. Complicated math/calculation

Computers now calculate very complicated math and calculation. Japan recently made a Super Computer (2011, I believe), with the name Kei (京). Kei is a term in numbers and one Kei is equaled with “one trillion multiplied by 10,000″. This name was given to the Super Computer because to Japanese people it really sounds that Kei is really fast. (It can calculate a Kei per second)

2. Laundry

Currently, a washer is supposed to be naturally there in your home. Well long time ago, in Japan, people used a product called Sentakuita, which is a wooden board to do laundry. You were supposed to rub the clothes etc. with the board. According to some people nearby me, the current detergents were soaps before. There was one method where people smash rice and make the rice sticky, and make it like soap. But this idea was not very appreciated because it was a waste of food.

3. Train Stations

Some people buy tickets, but usually we have PASMOs or SUICAs or whatever.. Before train officers had to punch a hole into each little ticket. Now, the machines are very useful to go through the gates fast.

What do you think life would be like working in a factory in a developed nation (ex. Japan/US/UK)?

Lots of factory use machines in their process of making products etc. So probably a better job in a factory should be watching, or thinking about the products and making ideas. So life would be pretty boring or simple to me.

What do you think life would be like working in a factory in a developing country (ex. Mexico, Indonesia, Sri Lanka)

Still developing countries should be making products etc. handmade, so it might be a good opportunity for me to make something. Though I might stick to the problem being bored repeating one process.

What are the advantages of using machines?

The advantages, are that for example humans do not have to do hard work to complete something, because machines can complete various tasks way faster than humans. Also, using machines might bring up a new idea of making something, and something better might be created. So it means machines might help humans have thoughts.

What are the disadvantages of using machines?

As mentioned before, machines use an awful lot of electricity. Not everything uses electricity for humans, but anything uses electricity for machines. For this, new long-life batteries are made, as well as solar panels that create electricity.

Art Practice Drawing Feedback

First of all, my group was Shin, Masaki, and I.

Advice/feedback I gave

For Shin – I think his drawing was perfect. The model picture was exactly the same as what Shin drew. I had only one advice, which was that one part was really shaded and dark, so I said that this one part was shaded too much. Also, that it would have been better to make light shades, and make the drawing more realistic.

For Masaki – Masaki’s technique was scribbles, which is one of the textures we learned. My feedback was that his scribbles were too hard, and it would have been a better drawing if his scribbles were less dark. Though I did like the shapes of the mountains because they were really alike to the original (model) picture.

Advice/feedback I got

From Shin – He said that my drawing was really good, and he just said that one part has some improvement. It was that the mountain in the background was too sharp on the peak, and it was unrealistic.

reflecting Shin’s feedback – I think that I need to put more effort in the backgrounds too. I also learned that the background is really important in a drawing, making the theme of the drawing.

From Masaki – Masaki also mentioned about the spikes on the top of the mountain. He said it would be a way better drawing if the mountains on the back were more detailed and shaded.
