Poetry Blogging

I would deeply like to recommend one poem on Poetry 180. That is # 62, The Bagel, by David Ignatow. This poem is mainly about a character “I” chasing a “bagel”. I personally understood this poem, which I eventually noticed it has a big meaning. A big meaning which is not much understood all the time. One thing I have noticed by reading this poem, is that you can always have fun like a little child, and enjoy the life, anywhere, anytime. I also mean this poem mainly conveys of a one’s childhood. Although the title of this poem is “The Bagel”, the actual bagel is not much referring to the actual meaning of this poem.
Overall I did like this poem, because I was attracted and  gave me interest from the title. One thing I noticed from reading this poem, was that this bagel was not just rolling away from the person, but was trying to make him chase the bagel itself. The person was “annoyed with myself” which means he was basically frustrated of himself. What happens in the end, is the person is “strangely happy” which means while he was chasing his bagel, his emotional feeling changed.
One thing I was focusing on, was the word “portent”. Basically it was because I didn’t know the meaning… As I searched “portent” in the dictionary, this is what I found: “a sign or warning that something esp. something momentous or calamitous. This means, the bagel was a sign of something. I think this was a sign of leading the person to happiness and enjoyment.

I found this poem confusing at first, but when I kept on reading, I found myself focusing on the person’s feeling changing in the beginning and the end. As mentioned before, he was basically annoyed and frustrated of himself. As he starts to chase the bagel, he slips and he also starts rolling down with the bagel like a bagel. Well, basically something unexpected has happened throughout the story. An sloppy mistake which was dropping a bagel, then lead himself to an enjoyable ending. This fact also relates to the recent mentions, which was when I was talking about the portent. I think the bagel was showing the person a sign – now we know that the sign is that the person will be eventually enjoying his time in his life.

Learner Profile

I think I have been a good communicator through the past English classes.

I would like to explain a situation when I have been working hard and was a good communicator in English class. It is about the Oral Presentation, when we had to talk about the imagery, surface meanings and the deeper meanings of a vignette from “the House on Mango Street”. I contributed on giving some information, and contributed ideas from my own perspective so that everyone would understand and can be helpful for them. I also contributed to the group by thinking about what I should be talking about, what is the best idea I can present to the class and Ms. Clifford. I also made a Google doc and shared it the all of the group members, so that we can correct our own ideas, brainstorm of a better idea, and to create a great presentation that everyone in the group will be satisfied with. When editing the google doc, I shared some of my ideas to my group-mates, because I wanted to be helpful and to contribute on creating a better presentation, and I also got some advice for my surface meanings of the vignette.

Overall in the presentation, we were able to analyze our information that we worked on together. I have conveyed the Learner Profile “Communicator” the most in a Oral Presentation Project, and showed a good attitude towards the group. I think I made a good effort and contribution on this project, which shows that I have been a pretty good “Communicator” in the project.

English Collage Reflection

First of all, below is my collage.

My favorite part of the collage, is the large formula in the middle. I found the A and B in the internet, so it looks awesome. Obviously in the website, I did find a C, but I did not use it. It has a meaning. It everything was the same (with the fire theme), it means some thing and something equals the same thing. The white C shows how its different to the others.

In this collage, I addressed one aspect with brief detail. That is, setting. One, is that I have included the Japan national flag, and the Time Machine. The japanese flag represents the setting, which is in Japan. Some people are not familiar with the Time Machine, but it is a circular icon with something like a clock in the middle. This thing, is originally a Macintosh Application. (By Apple) As a Student tech team member, when I thought time machine, only this came up. In the novel, time travels also occur. So the “time machine” represents the time travels. Imagination varies, but in my imagination, the past feels like dark. (This kind of imagination probably came up from television that were only black and white) So the background, is created with dark kind of colors, black, navy, and dark blue.

I would change one thing. In the story, the story goes from today to B.C. , then today.  (Again and again) I should have used a pop color, then dark, and on and on. It would have increased the representation of time, and time travel.

Where do your values come from?

For me, my ideas came from my recent actions I had made. I have also been taught some from my parents. I have also chose my values myself, for example, Anti Smoking. Now I am going to talk specifically about the values, whether it was chosen personally, taught, or from recent actions.

Well, it doesn’t look like it is, but “Challenge against anything” is the value I think is the most important for me. This includes work, personal issues, and etcetera. This value is also important in my private time, for example when I am skateboarding. Especially, when I want to try doing a new trick that is dangerous, I would “challenge” and try to accomplish the trick. That’s how I have improved on skateboarding. This was an example of one of my values: “Challenge against anything”. I chose this value as an example, because I think it fits all the reasons of “Where do my values come from?”.

Now I would like to list 3 values with a example, and each of them have different reasons for the question ”Where do my values come from?”.  Those 3 reasons are, my recent actions I had made, been taught by my parents, chose my values myself, as I mentioned before.

The first value is, “Anti-Smoking”. This value, is a value I chose myself. I have seen people smoke too much, and get lung cancer and other illnesses. Well, in English class, we have been reading “Two weeks with the Queen”, and now I quite know how it feels if your family member gets cancer. I don’t want my family to worry about me, so I have in my mind the word, “ANTI-SMOKE”. Also, I don’t want to pass away fast, and I also don’t want to feel pain, so I would not smoke. Plus, smoking is not good for health, and you wouldn’t actually gain anything from smoking.

Now the second value is, “No wasting money”. This value is made out from my recent actions. Well, I had wasted lots of money, and they were all my family’s money. Currently, I am in the “Pocket money system” which means I have to buy everything myself. (My mom will pay for me if I eat outside with my friends) Now I am improving on saving money. There is one method to be saving money, I think. It is: Choose a thing you want to buy, and the thing should  be really expensive. Now this makes me save money to buy this thing. That’s my method!

The last value is, “Work hard”. This is a value which my parents had taught me. Well, one fact is that I am not a student that really enjoys working and says “Working and studying is my life! Studying is the best verb ever!”. I am more of student which enjoys sports and games. Well, another fact is that I actually enjoy all the subject in Y.I.S. It is really enjoyable. (I especially enjoy…. ENGLISH WITH MS. CLIFFORD!!) I just do not like staying in the house moving my pencil and doing random work. I think feeling the nature and skateboarding, playing baseball and playing soccer is a lot better.  Well, I am trying to work hard, so at least there should be partial credit for that.

Now overall, I think values come from different places. For me, values come from my recent actions, from my family, and my thoughts and wishes. Other people have different reasons for their values, for example religion. The other part is that values are made to be a reminder of the person who has values.

Why is language powerful

Why is Language powerful?

Why is language powerful? What kind of power are there in language? Like superman? Like laser beams crushing through the world? No. But a power that is a lot more powerful.

Language has a lot of power. It can prevent large problems. Language has the power to stop wars. Language can stop cruel issues.

Language is to communicate with others. Communicate, and your life will definitely be better. More enjoyable. More peace.

Language is to share thoughts and ideas. What if the U.S. says they are going to throw a bomb into Japan? What can prevent it? Language has the power to prevent it.

Sadly, language is not only powerful in good ways. Language is used to hurt feelings. Why can people say those words or that type of language? Are they just lazy? Or hatred? Probably they don’t know the power of language, and they are using it the wrong way.

Now I have finished typing my knowledge about how language is powerful. Of course, there are tons of more reasons why language is powerful. Do you have any opinions or ideas? Perhaps you do!
