How would you react to Mathieu and Isabelle’s suggestions for the weekend? Which would you choose to do? Why? Compare your answers with a partner’s.

First of all I would be tired of having a conversation like this. I would just agree on Mathieu, and go to the zoo. We would be probably going, because there is a majority that we would be going to the zoo, because Mathieu and both agree. Well it depends whether Isabelle agrees/disagrees.

French Cafés as Social Institutions

  • For French class, Brian and I have been answering question about one café, Le Drouant. Please enjoy.
Février 2, 2012 Keigo et Brian
Maeda S. (Mme Maeda)
  • Historical background of your café

Café Drouant, was opened as a “bar-tobacco shop” in 1880, in Gaillon, by Charles Drounant. As this café continued its business, the neighborhood was in booming development, which pushed Charles to transform his shop into a bistro café. Drouant, now a bistro café, was having great business. Then, Jean Drouant sold Drouant to Robert Pascal. Then, Mr. Bansard took over the shop, but soon then the business was sold to the Elitair group, directed by Claude Douillard. In 2005, November 5, Antoine Westermann becomes the cook and owner of Drouant. In 2006, Westermann becomes the official owner of Drouant. Currently, it is what it was like in 2006.

  • Names of the famous people who frequented your café

On October 31st, 1914, the 72nd meeting of the Goncourt Academy took place at this café. The cafés tobacco shops, and the quarter became the gathering spot of the artists of the period just as Saint-Germain des Prés bacame on later. Prix Goncourt is a prize in French literature, given by the Académie Goncourt to the author of “the best and most imaginative prose work of the year”. As mentioned, the 72nd meeting took place in café Drouant.

  • The reason or purpose for those people to go to this café. Did they have a particular activity going on in this café?

Being close to the Avenue de l’Opera and the Paris Stock exchange, the Drouant is frequented by business mans and women for lunch. They also run a free wireless Internet access for their benefit, and it is a popular place for an evening meal after being to the theatre or the opera as it is also located not far from the Opéra Garnier and they serve food reasonably late.

  • Has your café been at the origin of some changes in French society? Has it had any impact on any aspect of French society?

Drouant has the benefit of Chef, Antoine Westermann at the helm and he places a special emphasis on vegetables, and has marked the return of the famous French     hors d’oeuvres, but this café is also known for their fresh seafood and oyster bar. From when this café started its business, their oyster bar by Charles Drouant became very famous.

  • Is this café playing the same role nowadays and why/why not?

Yes. As I have mentioned before, this café is very close to the Avenue de l’Opera, and some people would come into the café very late at midnight. So, the café, for dinner it is  the open from 7pm through to midnight. If would be very beneficial for the customers.

  • If you can have access to some figures, would you say that the number of cafés in France is generally increasing or decreasing? How would you explain this trend? What future developments can we foresee? Are there any new types of cafés that you are aware of?

I would say, the number of cafés are extremely decreasing, compared to about years ago. Probably, the peak was about 200,000 to 250,000 cafés in France. This was about 1955-1960, about 80 years later from when this café opened. Currently, there are only about 30000 to 40000 cafés in France. One reason, is that when the tourists get attention from these French cafés, the number of normal French people who go to café are decreasing. This café is still very convenient, for going in after you go to the Avenue de l’Opera. One thing that is new type for Drouant, is that they run a free wireless network, so it would be convenient for customers to use their electronic devices and use the Internet.

  • French cafés have existed for more than three hundred years. What is it that makes cafés still a popular tradition? Explore several aspects of your café and report on its location, its atmosphere, its menu and prices. From your results, what would you say contributes to making it a popular place?
I have been mentioning this fact, but this café is very close to different kinds of places. One thing that makes cafés still a popular tradition, is Dress codes. Dress codes in Drouant, are smart business, and dressy. The mixture of the setting between luxury, a cosy atmosphere and Paris chic at a restaurant, that serves high-quality cuisine means that it gets very busy, therefore reservations are recommended. This café, is very close to a Metro station Quatre Septembre or the Opera. One more thing, is that this café has a parking lot for the patrons. Overall, history, service, and traditions contribute to make Drouant a very famous café.

French Reflection

Mainly the students like soccer. It is not only for boys, but also for the girls as well. It seems like mostly everyone has a favorite soccer player themselves. Also, swimming was also popular. For example, the professional swimmer from Japan Kousuke Kitajima was famous and was a favorite swimmer to people just like me. Not much people enjoy running, but I really enjoyed Cross Country in November 10. We Japanese boys are serious baseball fans. First of all, there a 2 leagues, Central and Pacific. There are various fights going on, each other being a fan of different teams in the same league. My favorite team is Softbank Hawks, and player is Pitcher Toshiya Sugiuchi. Luckily, my favorite team is in the Pacific league, and the serious fan love Hanshin Tigers, from the Central league. It means that big conflicts do not occur. I am happy because recently in November, Softbank Hawks won the Japan Series against the Chunichi Dragons, and reached the top of Japan. Moving on, baseball was not really liked by the girls.

In cross country, I wore proper kits, and waited on the start line. Last year, my best time was 13.06, but then this year I improved to 11.51. More than 1 minute. It was really challenging, because I did my best, and achieved this time. I was constantly motivated by my friends and my rivals. Last year the friends I saw on the other side of the course (means way faster than me), were now running in front of me. I did not have interaction with the boys from Ishinomaki, because they were both 8th graders. They were really fast. I sometimes went to a Japanese public school, and the Japanese students are really fast at running. In our grade, the Ishinomaki students were both girls, Misaki and Rinka, but I didn’t talk to them. My Japanese teacher, Mr. Kashima, was complaining about how the girls were full mark in a test they participated, and how to report it to them. I learn that the Japanese people were really fast, and I, as a Japanese human, would like to improve more and more on my running.

One of Japan’s famous traditional sport, is Sumo wrestling. It is just my opinion, but I think that the current sumo is boring, because Yokozuna Hakuhou (白鵬) is always leading himself to victory. Recently, there was also a Yokozuna called Asashouryu (朝青龍), and these 2 Yokozuna’s battles were famous. In the sumo world, my fan was Asashouryu, and when he fought with Hakuhou, Ashashouryu’s motivation reached its climax, and won the matches. Currently, I wish that the weaker sumo wrestlers start growing and be a Yokozuna. Another sport is soccer. In Japan, there is one league called the J league, obviously standing for Japanese league. In Yokohama, the team is Yokohama F. Marinos, which home stadium is Yokohama Stadium, which is located in Kozukue, really close to Shinyokohama, and Kikuna. Japanese players are getting really strong, and one SB (Sideback, wing defender) called Yuto Nagatomo went to the famous soccer team Inter, in Italy. Inter is a very famous soccer team which is made by the key players from different countries. The name Inter is for International. The last sport is baseball. Baseball was brought to Japan in 1872, from the United States, by Horace Wilson. As mentioned, there are 2 leagues, Central and Pacific. Each league contains 6 teams, with a total of 12. Below is a list.Central league: Chunichi Dragons, Yakult Swallows, Yomiuri Giants, Hanshin Tigers, Hiroshima Toyo Carps, and DeNA Yokohama Baystars.Pacific league: Softbank Hawks, Nippon Ham Fighters, Seibu Lions, Orix Buffaloes, Rakuten Eagles, and Lotte Marines. In this school, Nippon Ham Fighters, Yomiuri Giants, and Hanshin Tigers is the most famous baseball teams, and there are lots of fans from the following teams in the school. Although, I like Softbank Hawks, this year’s most valuable and powerful team is Japan.

I think I work well at home. I think I really did a good job on remembering vocabulary, and working on the actual french phrases and sentences. I think I needed to improve on organizing work, as well as changing my attitudes towards the subject.
