Child Labor Debate Reflection

Child Labor Debate
In Humanities we just had a Child Labor Debate where we acted as people debating for and against child labor. I was the Lawyer for Sam Washington who was a factory owner that was for child labor.

In our performance I think I could have improved by speaking a bit louder and looking up instead of looking at the paper the whole time. One thing that I am proud of was that my questions were very good and they were very detailed and they helped prove child labor isn’t harmful and is good. If I were on the other side I would ask Haakon and myself if the kids in his factory got a good education while working.

Should child labor be allowed?

Some reasons child labor should be allowed would be that the kids can do things that adults can’t and are highly valued in the factory.   Children also have nothing to do and will learn to become lazy and will have no life skills when they grow up.  Children are also not forced to work and it is their families choice to send them to work or not.  Children will then get money and will be able to support their families to that they can get food and live normally. There are also some reasons that child labor should be banned.  Children can get deformities in their bones and children can also miss out on playing fun games and being a kid.  Children can also get some injuries that could be very painful.  I still think that child labor is a good thing as long as kids are not forced to work.  Children can be very useful in factories and the incidents mentioned before only happen sometimes and rarely do children get seriously injured.

How does my personal opinion differ from my characters?

I personally think that child labor is very bad and can cause many damages to children’s bodies.  I also think that the machines are very dangerous and children should not work around them.  My character thinks that child labor is good and children rarely get injuries. They also think that it is better than working at home. I think that it is better to work at home because then you are in a much healthier environment and people will be watching out for you so that you don’t get hurt. Overall I think my opinion is very different from my character’s opinion.
