We recently completed our 2nd art unit in 7th grade. In this unit we have been focusing on Line drawings. The unit question of this unit was “How can we communicate visually?” and the significant concept was “Line can be used to convey shape, texture and tone.” We completed our work based on serval field studies photo we choose, and I also used a black sharpie to complete it. My picture had a Mountain on the background, a river in the middle and also sand on the bottom, along with wood deck. I tried to use various line techniques to show the different contours in each shape.
In the begging of this unit I didnt have any confidence on line drawings at all since I have very little experience on it. But through out the process and classes we had, I was able progress and maintain knowledge on line drawing. I became more confident when I was able to consider the benefits of different types of lines such as,stippling and hatching. The different line techniques can really show the shape and contour of the object. I started experimenting with different lines when I knew that my drawing was being based on natural backgrounds which involves trees and mountains. Now I have a deep understanding on line drawings because of the process of the final drawing we had to do, and also the art criticism that we did to compare 2 different line drawings.
Overall I think that I am proud of my work because I never had an opportunity to utilize the amount of time we had. My personal goal was to use different types of lines to show the shapes and I think I achieved that compared to the fist drawing I did. I was especially proud of the clouds I did since usually my sky would be lines with a blank space between them, but as I was drawing my final one, I realized that it would better if the lines create a shape of a cloud. I am defiantly sure that I have progressed from what I was, too what I have became now.
Although I have said a few factors about my drawing, I think I could of improved on detailing my whole drawing by adding lines. For an example there are quite alot of blank spaces in my drawing, so I think it would be better if I added more lines. This includes adding more stippling or adding more scumbling. Other points I could improve on is the size and the value of the wood deck on the bottom. But I defiantly struggled on which line technique was best fitted to the shape or the object. I struggled on choosing which line would fit to draw a mountain since there could a lot of lines to create it. But I think I figured it out on the end and I am proud of that.
Overall things that I could of improved on is time management. Although I have researched towards my drawings and line techniques, it would of been better if I used my time more wisely. But I think there were more benefits then detractors in this unit, and I had fun along with gaining knowledge on line drawing.
Here is my drawing, and there is also a slide show of the whole grades drawings so click here to view it.
