A historian is a person that has studied history immensely. Usually focusing on a certain period, place, social, cultural, aspect of history. History being such a general word in my opinion I think it would be nearly impossible to study every part in full detail. By being a historian you have to research a lot of articles, witnesses, and many other things to develop a set of good information. It is really hard for a historian to gather information from something really old. Historians have to rely on other sources to get information. During this unit on historians I have briefly looked at a variety off different aspects of history. Theses include: political history, diplomatic history, social history, cultural history, economic history, and intellectual history.

In class we were to act like historians and research 3 generations of our family. 1 being a grandparents, 2 being a parent, and 3 being yourself. We created a questionare, the questions had to be helpful to describe what the daily life of a 13-14 year old in there generation would do. The challenges were putting everything together in the end result. Seeing how best I could put together my project. It took quite a while, trying 3 different software till finding the best. By doing this project I was trying to communicate to people that our daily lives have changed so much compared to our parents and grandparents. Even the gap between our parents and grandparents have shown great improvement in technology, education, and more.

With all this new technology that we have been introduced to in the 21st century it makes history a lot easy to research and to be remembered. Most likely if you wanted to find something you would just search it on the internet. It makes it easier to access the past and find information. History is constantly being created and history is constantly changing. After this unit I wasn’t even doing half of what a historian does, but I found it quite a challenge.

Here is my presentation:

A discussion that has been going on for many years, the copyright law. Copyright is made to protect the work of the publisher, and make it so nobody plagiarizes the work they have made. Though the copyright law now applies for one whole life time plus 75 years. So during that time the work is protected and almost untouched. A question that many ask, “Does copyright hinder or cultivate creativity ?” I think that there is no right or wrong answer to this, it is more personal choice. Here is what I think about the question.

I think that it depends on how you want to use it. Copyright regulations have many rules to follow, so it is hard to abide by the regulations. I think that in a way this cultivates your creativity. I think this because you have to use your imagination and your own skills to create something which does follow the rule of the copyright law. I think that with the regulations it makes you think more about what you are doing, it requires you to stretch your creativity. Though I think that a few of the rules make it difficult for you to extend your creativity. I also think that the time the piece of work is under copyright legislation is too long. I understand the life time rule, because of corse the publisher will want the work to be their own. Though I think that it is very hard to be creative. I think this because of all the legislation it makes it hard for you to follow all the copyright rules. It is a long process, it’s not a short process. You have to check through your work a lot and make sure you haven’t broken a part of the law.

In all I think it does depend on how you use it. If you are making a short project maybe a minute long at most it would be easier. Though if you were making a long video it would be more difficult, it would require you to stretch your creativity to a point where I think it would be too difficult. With a short video I think that it would be cultivating because you can use your imagination to mix short films, lyrics, pictures etc. Already just thinking about it myself there are so many possibilities that would be a good start to a really creative project.

1. Appearances and deception are a common theme in literature, how does Hinton demonstrate this?

She uses the appearance of the greasers to differentiate them from the Soc’s. For an example the greasers with their hair and the Soc’s with their Mustangs. I think that most of the characters in the outsiders are deceiving. I think this because I think that most of them put on a hard exterior but inside they are really different. Maybe nicer and softer.

2. Do narrators always tell the truth? Is Ponyboy a reliable narrator?

No they don’t. Ponyboy may possibly have seen it differently, and there may have been a different side to the event that was happening. Or he may have remembered it differently.

3. Is The Outsiders relevant to you? Can you relate to it? Why or why not?

I don’t think that I relate to the outsiders. I think that the story really gets to me and I definitely understand it, but I grow up in a totally different life. I’m not seperated because of where I was born and things like that.

4. Should The Outsiders be taught in school? If so, at what grade level?

I think that the outsiders should be taught in schools. I think this because the outsiders is reality. It has a lot more real life situations that people do face. I think that it is important for children to be exposed to it because one day or another they will be exposed to it. I think that 6, 7, 8th graders should read the book, not too old and not too young.

5. Who is your favourite character and why? Who is your least favourite? Explain your choice.

My favorite character is Dally. I think Dally has the most experience, I think that he has had the most happen to him and I think that hes very true to himself. He has this alter ego as well. He is really strong on the outside but he is also really soft on the inside and things do hurt him. I don’t exactly have a least favourite character. I say this because I think every character is really different and they all have very unique qualities and when they’re put together it makes the story really well.

6. Which character impacts you the most? What emotions do you feel for that character? Does he/she remind you of someone else you know? Of yourself?

I think that Johnny is the character that impacts me the most. I think this because no matter what he got up and tried and he did something wrong and he was able to live with himself. I think that he is really strong, also because he’s so young. I think that he has gone through so much with his family and killing someone. He reminds me of this girl I know, she goes through so much and still gets up every morning and tries her hardest.

I think an area of the design cycle that I have improved in is investigation. In week 2 investigation 2, I developed a better understanding of how to take notes and how to research the key ideas of what I was looking for. In the building Presentation notes I was able to read through the whole article and was able to collect useful information that would help me develop a better understanding for building a presentation. I think that I could have done a better job at brainstorming different ideas. Once I had thought of the idea of fashion tribes I didn’t really think of anything else, so I didn’t try to think of another good topic. I thought that during my practice with another tool, I did I good job. Although my presentation tool was fairly limited I thought that I did a good job explaining as much as I could. I think that I could have made my presentation more relevant toward my fellow peers. I think that if I made it more oriented toward my audience it would have made a stronger impact and would have been a lot more affective. I think that when it came down to when I had to make my presentation I did not look back at my information that I had collected. I think that I should have because I had a lot of good points that I made in my Brainstorm that I could have used during my presentation. I thought that my strengths while presenting is that I had a clear voice and simplistic slides which make it more appealing for the audience. I tried to make my presentation as short as possible, but I think that in the end I made it too short and ended up not communicating enough information to my audience. I think that, that was my weakness; not providing enough information. I think that if I had the chance to do this presentation again with time not being an issue, I would form a more detailed script and I would research more tools to use and make it simplistic yet complex. I also think that I would have good information and make it so my presentation was more fun. I think that I didn’t use my time very wisely for some of the planning with me being away and not spending enough time on the actual presentation itself.

I will be comparing the two different versions of the classic song ‘With or Without You’ by the band U2. I chose the song ‘With or Without You’ because I thought it was a classic song. I think that this song is classic because it has a memorable chorus line and the melody is catchy. I will analyzing the two versions of the song.

First I will analyse the original song ‘With or Without You.’ In the song the instruments that I clearly hear are the tambourine, bass drum, drums, electric guitar, base guitar, (infinite guitar), keyboard, and male vocals. These things are clearly heard in original song. There is a steady tempo throughout the whole of the song. There is no real change throughout the whole of the song. Unlike the orchestral version, the original uses the bass drums to keep the rhythm and tempo throughout the song. In the chorus the electric guitar is louder/stronger giving it a heavy feeling. The vocals in the song are sung by the lead singer of the band U2. You can hear the lyrics that he is singing clearly, and because of this it gives you a different expressive element to the song. It is more depressing, sad, and more intimate. When I look at the lyrics and hear the lyrics I think of a person that wasn’t there but is needed, and even though that person isn’t there you still love them no matter what. The real meaning of the lyrics from Bono is, “The lyric is pure torment. One of the things that was happening at the time was the collision in my own mind between being faithful to your art or being faithful to your lover…So now I have this person in my life whom I love more than my life but I’m wondering if the reason I’m not writing is because I’m now a domesticated beast.” (p.225 of U2 by U2) The tambour of the instruments gives you the depressing feel, because of that consistant, and strong, bass line and bass drum. The original in comparison to the orchestral version is very different.

I will now analyse the orchestral version of the song ‘With or Without You.’ The instruments that I can hear in this version are the violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, french horns, and brass. The tempo of this version is steady and does not change much throughout the song. In this version of the song it sounds like the violins, viola’s and the cello’s are setting the main rhythm and tempo. The chorus and bridge is played with what sounds like a clarinet, on top of the other string instruments. In this version of ‘With or Without You’ there are no vocals, because of this you do not know what the song is really about. From that it leads into another point that if I hand not of heard the original version of the song I would not have known it was a sad song. Because of the tambour of the instruments you get a more happy feel to the song. You usually associate horns and brass with a more triumphant feel. When I hear this version of the song it sounds more motivational and I do not feel sad at all when I hear it. Compared to the original song it is very different.

There are not many things that are similar things about these two songs. Thought two things that are the same are the melody and tempo. The melody is the same, though the orchestral version has made a variation of the melody it is nearly identical. The tempo is very similar in the two versions of the song as well.

In my analysis I hoped to show that depending on the different expressive elements of the song you develop a different interpretation of the song. When you first hear the two songs you don’t think there is much different about them but when you actually look into it in depth you realize that there are many things that make the versions different. Different elements, when put together make classic songs like the song ‘With or Without You.’

In this blog post I will be writing about my interpretation on the poem ‘End of April’ by Phillis Levin. The poem ‘End of April’ is poem number 178 and has 8 stansa’s. When I look at the first stansa of the poem, ‘I found a robin’s egg, broken, but not shattered,’ I thought of the egg as an egg, but when the second stansa starts with ‘I had been thinking of you,’ I started to think of the egg as a broken heart and not an egg. I could start to imagine an egg falling out of a nest on a tree. As the poem continues I started to get a stronger feeling of the poem being about a broken heart, or someone loosing someone. When the author is describing the egg in the third stansa as ‘a delicate toy, as light as confetti’ you start to get a feeling of how fragile the egg is. In the fourth stansa of the poem the author writes’It didn’t seem real, but nature will do such things from time to time,’ I did not really know what to think of it. The more I thought of it I thought maybe it was that it did not feel real loosing the the person and that life does that to people, instead of nature does that from time to time. On the fifth and sixth stansa I was was confused, because it says something about looking inside of something. I thought that the person was looking inside her heart and the crown was missing, the crown being the lost loved one. The poem ends with ‘where, periodically, it opens up its wings, tearing me apart.’ That is my favorite stansa in the poem. When I hear it I think of the song ‘What hurts the most’ By Rascal Flatts. The girl in that music video just lost her boyfriend in a car accident and she cries and cries and it looks as if she is falling apart herself.

When I saw the title of the poem I thought it would be a sad poem. I thought this because it said ‘End of April,’ the word end is negative therefore I assumed that the poem was negative. I thought that the poem would be about Spring time ending and not about a broken heart.

I do not really like the fourth and fifth stansa because I do not like the way it is written. I think that it what the author is trying to express could be written in a different way. Though I do like the fluidness of the poem and the fact that it uses so many metaphors for the different ways of expressing its meaning.

What techniques did I use to approach this skill?
We had to be in character and we had to have a clear separation of relation status and authority.
How effective was my status and reversal of status?
I thought that we had a clear separation of the relationship between us but I think that the idea we had made it really hard to reverse the status and we didn’t do a very good job at that.
How would I use this in performance?
I would use this performance if I wanted to change the story. Because once you change the relationship and status level of the characters then the story changes. So if I wanted to have a big change that could work by switching the status’s I would do that.

The D zone is the inner circle that surronds the goal. Only the goalie is aloud inside the circle. The players from the opposing team can jump over the line and shoot, but they have to shoot before the land inside the circle.

They can move freely within the goals perimetre

They can not pass the goal perimetre if she/he is dribbling or holding the ball

The goalie can use all parts of their body to touch the ball including their feet

The goalie can come out of the goalie circle and become a regular player

If the goalie blocks the ball and it goes out it still stays in possession of their team with a throw in from the goalie.

If the ball hits the goal keeper’s hand and goes outside of the court, how is play resumed?

The ball stays in possession of the goalies team and it starts from a goalie throw in.

Can players pass the ball to their own goalkeeper?

No, you loose possession of the ball and you have to give the ball to the other team.

What will happen if the defensive players go inside the 6m line to defend a shot?

If they do it to gain advantage they get penalized, and if they have the ball or knock the ball out of the players hand they have to give up possession of the ball.

What is a “fast throw-off”?

Modern Handball introduced the “fast throw-off.” It is when the play will be immediately restarted by the referees as soon as the attacking team fulfills its requirements.
