Portrait Painting- Self Reflection

For our second unit in grade 6 art, we made self portrait paintings. We had to make our picture represent ourselves like what are lives are about and what we like. Our unit question was “How do our personal experiences shape our identity?”

During this unit, I improved on making the facial features. I was able to make them the shape I wanted and a little more realistic then I usually make them. I thought I did a good job on painting the nose with was an improvement on the painting I did before. I found it hard to draw the outline of the face before I painted it. I also found it hard to find a background I like. I wasn’t sure wat background I could use to show my cultural background. I had no idea what to paint or which colours to use. So I decided to use just a plain black background. I thought it looked really plain but cool.

I improved in adding value with paints and this is a skill I want to improve more in. This is the first time I tried this skill I thought I made my painting work look better but i don’t think I used it as well as I could. Adding tone was hard because the paint has to be wet and it dries quickly. I used orange for my face and blue for my hair. I thought my background made my life look sad when I actually really like my life. I thought after I looked at my face I didn’t think I used shading well and where it needs it. Next time i would want to look at the picture of me and really look at what parts of my face needs shading.

For my background I thought about what described me and what color describes me and what I like. I decided to go for an all black background because sometimes I cant make decisions and I feel like black describes that. I used a lot of dark colors in my work to show this.

During this unit I think I improved in lots of art skill. I hope next time I can use them all effectively. This unit has had it’s ups and downs but I have enjoyed most of it.

Self-portrait reflection

This unit we made self-portraits. Our unit question was ‘How does observing help us learn’.Our first art lesson on this unit, Mr. Welk told us to draw a self portrait of our self. Of couse we didn’t know much on how to draw a self-portrait. This is my first self-portrait.

With my first self portrait I didn’t really know what to do. I thought I could improve on the hair because it looks like im bold with a bit of hair. I could also improve the shape of my face because my face isn’t that round or plump. I found drawing the nose hard because I couldn’t get the nose right because I didn’t know how to draw a nose and I was never good at drawing noses. I made the eyes to big and the lips too small. Also I have no ears in my first self portrait. Then when Mr .Welk gave out close up photos of our selves I noticed I needed too add shading and make my eyes smaller and my face isn’t round. This is my close up photo.

As you can see compared to my first self portrait you can tell that my eyes are smaller and my face is more of an oval shape. Also my mouth is bigger and my face has more shading. After looking at my close up two weeks later I made another self portrait. This is my second self-portrait.

As you can see I improved all my mistakes and improved everything that was bad like the shape of the face and the eye size and the hair. In conclusion I have improved a lot and I am really proud of my artwork.
