Koto (Taka) Reflection
Posted on December 3rd, 2012 at 8:42 am by and

This is a link to a video of me playing Taka on Koto.

I need a lot more practice to improve all the techniques used in this piece. I find Section “D” really hard because you move your fingers a lot but I got used to it a little since I’ve been practicing that part a lot. It felt awkward taking a video of myself playing the music because i don’t do that quite often.
I’ve really improved a lot comparing to the first 2 weeks I’ve started to play. To improve my skills in this music, I’m going to set a goal for myself to at least practice 5~10 minutes a day. (And fill in my practice log..)
Overall, I love this piece because it’s really catchy :)

Drama Creative Movement Reflection
Posted on April 30th, 2012 at 12:12 pm by and

In Drama class, we have been looking at different movements for example Smooth and Jerky movements. We looked at examples like Singing in the Rain by Gene Kelly.
Our task in this unit was to make a dance including a storyline with a group of 2 or 3. I made a dance with Tomoka and Elina. We danced to a Song called Vitamin (which sounds weird but means a lot to us) by Girls Generation also known as the top K-pop dancer/singer. This song was sang in Korean but I think the rhythm and the beat is more important than the lyrics so we chose this song.

Our story was about us dancing and Tomoka makes a mistake right when it was the last practice and then we get very mad at eachother. We look at eachother one by one and look who’s the best at dancing but at last we all get sad since we’ve been working together for years. So then we all say sorry which you actually don’t say it directly in the dance but act as if we are saying it.

The main technique we used in the dance was the expression changing around each stage. I couldn’t really show my face well because it was embarrassing. Another technique we used to make it more dramatic was using both jerky/ robotic movements and smooth movements. I think we made our dance balanced by doing this.

The most difficult thing was the actual performing in front of the class. But to make it easier, I tried not to look at people’s face. I stared at the camera most of the time. It was very embarrassing but when it was done, I felt like I accomplished something which was great.

In the dance, I was able to use a whole lot of space in the room. If we only stand in one place it is boring so we chose to use the spaces more.

By watching other people’s dances, I learnt that it is better to be more in to the music and to focus. I was focused in the dance but was too embarrassed that I couldn’t really show my feeling’s through the dance. I was very surprised because when we were practicing I had so much energy going through my body but when it came to the real one  I didn’t know what to do and made a lot of mistakes.

In this Dance, I think we had Asymmetry, Symmetry, Balance, Beat and rhythm, jerky/smooth movements, fast/slow movements, emotion in your face, posture and gesture, start and end in a neutral position, stay within the taped area of the performance space.

Some of my group mates did things I actually didn’t do so I am really envious of them. If I can, I really want to do this again because it was really fun.
My passion is to dance so it is a pleasure to learn and do something like this at school. I started dancing from 7 and I still really enjoy it. Now I do Jazz dance and dance with my friends and make up own dances.
It was the best unit I’ve ever done in school!!!! Thank you Mr. Meiklejohn!!!

Oh, and here is my video ↓

Painting Self-portrait Reflection
Posted on March 15th, 2012 at 12:22 pm by and

In the second unit this year, we started painting our self-portrait again but used paint instead of Pencil.
Not only drawing our faces, but we also had to express our feelings, emotions and personality in the background to give audience some hint of what kind of person we are. We weren’t really allowed to draw something that was actually very obvious for the audience.
For example: Drawing a Soccer ball because you like soccer, Writing “I LOVE MUSIC” because you like music or even drawing what the flag is of where you come from.

During this unit, before starting to draw straight away, we looked at an example self-portrait painting of Frida Kahlo. She was also one of the person who put all her emotions and feelings in the painting. Here is an Example ↓

From this picture, you can first see that the one on the right is Frida Kahlo      wearing a mexican dress, and if you look closely, you can also see that blood  isn’t dripping from her heart, which means she was Happy in Mexico.
Looking at the left side, she is wearing a German dress. And if you see closely  again, you can see that blood is dripping. So it means she had a hard time in Germany.
Not only how she felt but, she was also attacked by the disease, polio. This disease caused her for her right leg to become way skinnier than the other leg.

Now on to my self portrait

I think I did better on this Self-portrait, than last time’s one. Firstly I was able to concentrate on the shading and stayed calm.
I felt like Staying calm makes your drawing even better.
I stayed focused on the shadings more than other things. Looking at the other self-portraits from the last unit, I felt like I didn’t have much of an Focus on the shadings. Now I know that Shadings make your drawing look better and stand out like you are looking at an 3D picture.
My strengths were, using different colors to make it interesting and giving my personality and feelings. I don’t know if you can actually see the background from the picture but I used a dark background to show the feeling that I’m sometimes dark. And then added in some bright spots representing my friends and showing that they always make me happy and bright.
My Weaknesses were, Drawing realisticly. ( I am still used to drawing Comic type, so it was kind of hard to focus on making the drawing realistic.

Overall, I think I did well. Next time, I want to try more on keeping the drawing simple. I think I mixed too much colors together.
I am really excited for the next unit!!

6B Drama: Life Sequence from YIS Arts on Vimeo.

In drama, we had to choose a favorite video to show my parents in student led conference.

I chose this video to share because the story was funny and it didn’t really show my face.

I hope you enjoy
