Field Studies Assignment
Risk Taker

I think I was a risk taker when we went hot air ballooning. I have always had a fear of heights, so this was something new.
I was part of a group with Peter, Jack, Connor, Feriz, and Toby. When they were picking the group to go up, our group was chosen second. I was happy that we were the second group to go, so that I could see how things went for the first group and still get it over with soon. As I was climbing into the balloon, I went to the center of the basket, so I wouldn’t have to look over the side. As we went up, the basket tilted to one side, because all of our group was on one half of the basket. I was worried that the basket might spill, but it didn’t.
When we got to the top of the height limit, I inched away from the middle of the basket, and got to side and looked out. We were pretty high up, and I found that I wasn’t that scared. It turns out, that I was more afraid before than during the ride.
Open-Minded

One of the traits of being Open-Minded is to “Respects the views of others”. At the hotel, we slept in a Japanese tatami room. I was told by one my Japanese group-mates, that it was traditional to make and put away your beds every day. I think our group was open-minded, by respecting this tradition. Every evening we set up the beds from scratch and every morning we cleaned them up to scratch. We also had to move the table out of the way to set up our beds.
it was kind of a race to set up the beds so you could get the best spot, the best blanket, and choose who you would sleep next to. No one wanted to sleep next to the door because anyone leaving the room had to step over you. Setting up the beds was hard, but it was probably the hardest to clean up because you had to fold the sheets, fold the mat, and put everything away. This was hard because the room was very small.
Reflective

When we were on the trip I think I was very reflective. Every day I would sit down at the table in our room and take notes about the day. I remember the first day, our group started writing before the teacher announced to even start writing for the trip. During the skit I learned more about my classmates. For example, I learned that one of my classmates has a great sense of humor. He used a funny accent while playing his part that totally cracked me up.
Balanced

I think I was balanced because I was a participant in every activity, such as biking, canoeing and hiking. I had not gone biking in 2 years but I still went biking even though I thought I might fall because it had been so long since I last rode. I still went on and tried my best and for the hot air ballooning too. I was scared to go up in the balloon, but I still went up. Also for the skit, I put effort in to it even though i don’t consider myself an actor.

I think I was being an inquirer because on hikes I was always asking questions to the Evergreen staff. I was asking questions about nature at first and then somehow we started talking about the economy. I was learning a lot of stuff even if it was not all on topic of what we were doing.
