In Drama class we watched the classical music video Singing in the Rain performed by Gene Kelly.

We watched this video and we were told to grade Gene Kelly’s performance from four different areas (rhythm, expression, props and moving through space). Hope you enjoy my thoughts about this performance.
Gene Kelly had a lot of props but he used them effectively so they were worth using. In the beginning of the video Gene Kelly jumps on a lamppost. He uses it show he’s so happy he’s kind of turning crazy. He used the umbrella effectively. He spun the umbrella around to show his feelings at that time it was joy. I really enjoyed the part when he put the umbrella on the ground, up-side down and twirled it in a joyful mood.
Kelly’s expression showed and told me a lot. When the camera zoomed in Kelly had a huge grin on his face to make me understand how joyful Kelly was. The way the grin was so big it made me grin too. Not only his expression showed a lot it was also his movements. When he swayed back and forth and smoothly jumped made me understand the level of joyfulness. In the beginning of the story when he kissed that girl he was really happy and when he was at the lamppost when he was acting kind of crazy he said he was in love so the audience could understand why he’s so happy.
Kelly used the stage if you can call it that. He jumped forward and he was constantly moving to his right. He was sometimes dancing while he was moving or he simply was walking down the street. He was sometimes spinning around the lamppost and once there was particular spot, for example when he found a rain gutter he stopped and made a leaping back motion every time he got near which made it comical because he was acting kind of scared.
He had a rhythm that he matched his dancing to. When there came a part that was different from the songs regular rhythm he would do a short dance. This looked very good because he timed the parts when to dance perfectly so it looked smooth.
I think Gene Kelly was very comical and I really enjoyed it and I thought he was really creative. I really liked at the end when the cop comes when he’s playing in the rain. I thought he was doing a great job with his dance. I also enjoyed it even more through the points above.
