Grade 6

GRADE 6
At YIS we were asked to create a online portfolio to represent our 6th grade year.

We were asked to make three different goals at the beginning of the second semester.  As in the second semester I was distracting people and having a hard time to stay on task.

My goals were:

  1. To be less of a distraction
  2. To be more calm in class
  3. Give other people chances to talk

For the first goal I think I have gotten better at this by staying calm in class but I have somedays where I’m out of control and off task.  When I’m off task I end up breaking my other goal to be more calm in class.  So with these goals connected I think I should be less and less of a distraction in class.  I think I should keep improving until I’m never a distraction in class.  I think these goals have helped me a lot this year by helping me be a better student.  Not only being a better student it has helped me concentrate and learn more.

For my second goal I think I am more calm in class but on rainy days when we can’t go outside it is harder for me to concentrate.  I think I should come to school with less energy so if it rains or if it doesn’t rain I am still calm.  This has helped me a lot this year because I can concentrate and I’m not bouncing against the walls.   Instead I’m more calm and I concentrate and learn.

For my third goal I think I have talked less and given more people to talk but sometimes I interrupt people.   This occurs when I have an idea and I want to share it so bad I don’t listen to other people and I interrupt others.  I think I have improved but sometime it still happens so I want to make it so I don’t interrupt people.  This has helped me a lot this year by being more social and to listen to other people.  By listening to other people I can learn more.

We chose pieces from each class that we thought was special because we improved in that part of the subject, places I want to improve in, pieces that we are proud of and pieces that we enjoyed creating.

PE

In Physical Education my favorite piece was a blog we wrote about our cross-country unit.  I really enjoyed the process because I had to work hard to get our times when we ran.  It was really fun although it took time I enjoyed running and then in the end we wrote this blog post about our times and how we felt.  In this unit it was really tiring but I tried my best and I ended up enjoying it.  When we wrote the reflection I was really surprised because of my ups and downs on my running during the year.  I would do well then I wouldn’t do so well but I got my best record in the end.

Technology

In Technology I chose modifying my blog.  Even though Ms.Cofino taught me in Thailand I really enjoyed learning again because I learned more.  I made my blog better than my blog was in Thailand.  I am really proud of it because I work really hard on it and I get a lot of visitors which I’m proud that came to my blog.  As you can see from my blog now compared to when I just made my blog.  My theme changed, my header changed, I added more widgets and I made it give different feelings.

English

In English I chose the podcast about Trash by Andy Mulligan.  I chose this piece because I read a fascinating book and it was my first podcast.  As my first podcast I was really excited and I thought I learned a lot about podcasts and books.  I really enjoyed creating this piece because even though there were guidelines I could be creative.  I enjoyed creating the into and outro too because that time we could be really creative.

Art

In art I chose the creative portrait of me.  This one I chose because in the beginning of the unit it was hard for me to draw using paints.  It was also hard for me to use paint over paint because you had to work fast because the paint was going to dry.  I had researched about different hobbies but soccer was my favorite so I made a portrait that fit my hobby.

Humanities

For Humanities I chose my early humans display because I’m really proud because I worked hard and I thought it looked good.  This was something that I learned a lot about early humans and how they acted.  I could play around with the background because this unit was really laid-back and easy.  I put in a lot of time into it so it turned how I wanted it to be.

Music

For Music I chose my solo act which I performed Jingle Bells Boogie.  I chose this piece because I just started trombone and I already performed a solo.  This was my first trombone performance and hopefully the first of many.  Recently I performed in the Middle School music showcase where I performed with the wind ensemble.  I think this solo act really got me hooked with the trombone instrument.  This blog post was supposed to have a podcast but it didn’t.

Science

In Science I chose when we created parachutes.  I worked with Sungwon.  Together we created a really long  parachute which won the contest.  This parachute was the first parachute to touch the ground so we lost but this parachute was also the last to touch the ground which means we won.  I chose this piece because it was really fun creating and I could be creative.

Math

In math I chose my code work.  Because it was like a puzzle and it was a challenge but it was fun.  In this there were different codes so I learned how to pass notes without the teacher noticing which I won’t.  But these codes played a useful part in history.  I learned not only about how to use and solve codes I learned what role they played in the past.

Drama

For drama I chose my video about my brother who inspires me.  It was fun making this piece because I could be creative and decide what to do and say.  I had different ideas on who to talk about such as my friends but my brother is the person I look up to most and I decided to show how thankful I am in a speech.  This is a speech that really meant something so I’m really proud of it.  But it was more fun creating it.

Japanese

For Japanese I chose my kanji test because I just moved up to the semi-native and I already am getting 100% on the tests.  Last year when I was in the beginners class the teacher told me it would be challenging for me but I’m already getting 100% which is a miracle.  These kanji tests are really fun because I can test my knowledge but learning these kanji is the most fun.

Chinese

In chinese I chose my drawing of who I am.  I chose this because I’m really proud of it because I just started chinese and I got this far.  Since I just started and I have no chinese connection chinese class has been challenging but for me to get this far is amazing and I’m really proud.  This was really fun because I could be really creative on how I express who I am.  Showing how old I am I wrote in eraser that’s the white lines in the colored in spot.  This was really creative but I’m really proud of it.

I think these are my best of pieces of work but I will try to produce more and more good work to share with you.  With the goals I want to get better and better until I have to make new goals.
