Digitally Social?

At YIS, it is currently Digital Citizenship Week. Our student council has created a blog post that we are trying to share as much as possible. By posting this and emailing it to different people, we hope to get as many comments as possible to find out how people are connected to our school. Please take a bit of time to read the post and answer the questions! It would mean a lot to us, thank you.

What is bullying?

Bullying can come in many different forms. It can be name-calling, excluding people, taking things from someone, forcing them to do things, or physically hurting them. Anything that makes someone feel bad, uncomfortable or unsafe is considered bullying.

What are strategies for dealing with bullying?

First of all, try to find out why they are bullying you. You can ignore them, try to stay in groups, and sometimes just tell them how you feel, because they might not know that they are actually bullying you in the first place. There’s nothing wrong with telling an adult if you need to.

Why do people bully?

It makes the person feel strong, as if they have power over the victim. There are many different reasons that people bully: they could have family problems, they were bullied themselves, they have no friends or feel lonely, taking out frustration on others, or not understanding how the victims feel.

What can be the consequences of bullying?

There are several different consequences of bullying, for the bully and for the victim. Bullying can usually affect the victim by making them sad and lonely, and their academic achievement levels can drop. Sometimes people even drop out of school. Eventually a teacher or parent will find out about the bullying, and then the bully will get in trouble and hopefully stop.
