Express Yourself:Portrait Painting Reflection
In the second unit of art we are working on our portrait to show our culture, expression and identity. We have learned about brush techniques and using different colors to show expresion. We learned the primary colors (red, blue and yellow) complimentary colors (colors that are opposite from each other on the color wheel) and so on. Our unit question is ‘How do our experiences shape our identity?’
During this process what I think was the most challenging was the face. For example the nose, mouth and eyes were the challenging part of making a portrait. Another thing that was challenging for me was the color blending on my face. What I think was easy for me was the background because I didn’t need to do much blending the colors and it was easy to choose what I want for the background. However I think that I did a better painting then the last one.
What I think was my weakness was the facial expression since my expression was just blank and nothing else. Another weakness was of course my nose, eyes and mouth because I did not make a good enough effort to make it more realistic. What I think was my strength was maybe the background because it expresses myself. For example the music notes show that I play some instruments and that I love music. Another example is that the knives show that I like action in my life.
In the painting I think I brought expression and identity through the background of my painting. However I think I should have added something else to it because there was only two different things that was showing my identity. However I still think that my background shows lots of identity. What I need to work on is mostly bringing my expression into my painting because there was none. For example next time I should have a smile on my face instead of just a blank expression.
In conclusion I think that I should mostly work on my expression and a little of my identity. I also still need to work on my eyes, nose and mouth because it does not look very real. Overall I think I did better then my last portrait. The things I did better on it was the identity and the size of my face. I am most proud of my background because it shows my identity.
Self Portrait Reflection
Our first art unit was drawing a portrait. In that unit we focused on our observational skills. I think I’ve gotten better at drawing portraits than I was the first time I started. What I improved throughout thing whole year is the the nose. The shading of the nose and the shape of the nose. What I still needed to improve was the shape of the face and the shading of the hair to make it more realistic. What my weakness was the eyes. I couldn’t shade it very well and, the size and the position of it was the part I struggled the most with when I was drawing it. I think that if we improved our observational skill we would be more aware of little thing that appear on people’s faces which would make it more realistic.
