Science This Year

This year in Science class we did a variety of different things such as experiments, text book work and documentaries. I really liked doing experiments because they were really interesting and useful. I really liked making crystals in class because it was a interesting experiment. I thought a lot about our experiment and how to do them. I also enjoyed the documentaries a lot. We learned a lot of information by watching a plant documentary. It was very interesting and it taught me loads of information about plants and how they do different things. the text book questions are also very useful. They teach us about science in detail with good words.

Over all I really enjoyed science and I can’t wait until I get to do it again.

Designing The Experiment

What I Am Doing

In class we have to choose and experiment that had something to do with gravity. We had to do this in partners and my partner is Elina. Our experiment is going to explain what shoes have more grip.

My Hypothesis

I think sports shoes are going to have more grip. I think this because there are more holes at the bottom of sports shoes than other shoes and that makes sports shoes become sport shoes. I think the shoe with the least grip will be flats because they have flat bottoms and they have no holes at the bottom. This makes flats more slippery and that makes they have less grip.

My Variables

One thing that is going to change is the amount of books needed to make the shoes glide. One thing that is going to stay the same is the wood because we only need to use the wood to put the shoes on and to rest on the books. One thing we are going to control are the shoes. We will be changing what shoes we will use and measure how long it will stay on.

My Method

First we are going to put one book on the floor and rest on side of the wood plank on the book. We then put weights inside the shoes and put one of the shoes on the side of the plank thats resting on the books. If the shoe does not glide down, we keep adding shoes until they do. Then when it glides we take of that shoe and add the next one and do the same with six shoes.

Apparatus/Materials

In my experiment I will need a few weights (enough for six shoes), a wood plank, some books and around six shoes.

Risk Assessment

We have to be cautious with the weights and that we don’t drop them on someone or something. There are not that many risks to this experiment.

My Next Stage

If we had more time to do these experiments I would choose one that is more to do with gravity.

Choosing My Experiment

What Stuff We Have Been Learning:

We have been learning about forces. Forces are pushes and pulls. We also learned about how they effect some objects like increasing the speed or changing the direction. One force is Friction. Friction pulls a force in the opposite direction. Another force is Gravity. Gravity is a force that pulls things down. Gravity is a force that all objects have. Another force is the opposing force. The opposing force is the force opposing gravity. Our skeleton is our opposing force.

Our Activities

In this unit we have done an experiment on making a parachute. The goal was to make the parachute go down slower than the other groups parachute. We had to be in groups of two and my partner was Rhiannu. Our parachute looked good at first but then when we got outside the wind was hard and it kind of messed up the parachute. Then we got to make a second parachute to test out. Me and my partner added some more sticks but it was only a bit better. We thought adding sticks to the sides would make it spread out more and then it would glide down slowly. Right now we are working on an experiment that we find our selfs and do with a partner. My partner is Elina. Our experiment is seeing what types of shoes have more grip.

My Design Task Topic

Right now we are working on an experiment that we find our selfs and do with a partner. My partner is Elina. The experiment has to do with gravity. Our experiment is seeing what types of shoes have more grip. We need a wood plank, shoes, weights and some books. We are going to but one side of the plank on a book so the plank tilts. Then we put weights in the shoes and put one of the shoes on the side of the plank thats resting on the book. If the shoe does not slide down, add more books until they do. That is my experiment.

Science reflection

  1. What have I enjoyed in Science during the last unit? Give examples

I enjoyed doing the slime/goo experiment because I felt the goo and it felt weird and I had fun making it.

2. What have I not enjoyed in Science during the last unit? Give examples

It was a bit boring to look at all the slides because we had to take notes and I could not concentrate.

3.What area in Science do you think you have improved the most in over the previous 10 weeks? Give examples. This might be something you have learnt or a skill you improved in.

I learned a lot about solid, liquid and gas. I learned about melting, freezing etc..

4.What area in Science do you think you need to improve on the most for the next unit? Explain what it is, or explain a skill or concept you need to re-learn.

I think I need to improve and learn more about what makes things living.
