Digital Story Reflection

In tech class we have been working on making our own digital story. A digital story is like a short film that you make but you create a story to film about. We started out planning things and learning different techniques with a planning sheet. We named some of the words and explained what they were and what they meant. After we made a story board and a script and we got actors/actresses to star in our digital stories. We were only allowed to choose people in the school. My film was called ‘the hunger games (literally)’. It was about three girls that aren’t allowed to eat and the winner will be the one that goes the longest without eating.

This is the design cycle. This is the different steps we go along to as a part of the MYP program (Middle Years Program). The first step of the design cycle is investigate. In this step we look at the unit question which is “How can we use media to communicate our stories?”. We got into groups of four and we discussed what this question means, how can we explain it in our own words and how to answer it. We also looked at some key points of digital storytelling. We had to think about some certain questions like what does a regular story include?, where is it going to be placed?, What is the problem going to be? etc. These are some of the points we came up with:

  • A good digital story needs to have a beginning, middle and a end.
  • It needs a setting
  • A story normally has a problem (eg. Beginning: A story about a couple who are in love Middle: they break up End: they get back together HAPPY ENDING!!)
  • What is the plot?
  • What age group is the story going to be directed to? (Audience)

Next we had to watch three (or more) videos from Mr Curkovic’s wiki. Whilst watching them we had to analyze them and put down some more key points to digital storytelling that we thought could help us we also had to type down the things that we noticed throughout the story, what we thought was good and what we thought could need some improvement. Some videos I watched were:

  1. Ashley’s DIgital Story
  2. The Best Artist Ever
  3. Mr C’s Teaching Philosoohy
  4. A Brief History of John Baldessari

I thought that this was a fun activity because we got to look at other peoples videos and critique them. The one that I liked the best was Mr C’s Teaching Philosophy because he explained everything with a lot of detail and I liked how when he was doing the drawing he rewinded it so that he could show how he did it backwards. I also liked how he would draw pictures to go along with what he was saying and how he would have one question but would answer it with all the detail he could possibly give.

The next step on the design cycle is plan. So what we had to do was brainstorm various ideas for our digital stories. We thought about the different things we had looked at and how we could put them into our stories. I decided that I would take a famous movie (The Hunger Games) and I would make a parody of it. After brainstorming everything and making our final decision of what we were going to do for our story we had to make a storyboard. In the storyboard we had to draw the different things that we would do in the different scenes and all the different angles, we didn’t have to draw it perfectly detailed and we didn’t have to draw the every single step that the actor/actress would take we just had to make it so that it would show the important parts. So we would have around three to five frames showing what happens in one scene.

The next step on the cycle is create. This is the fun part where you get to create the digital story. I had a lot of fun with this step because I got to hang out with my friends and we would film little parts of the film at a time but towards the end I got a little stressed with editing because I needed to do a lot of editing. This was a awesome part though as well because I really love using iMovie and it was a good way for me to learn about the different things I can do. I had a lot of fun experimenting but I decided to stick to the things that I already know how to do.

In conclusion, this unit was a blast and I would love to do it again. If we had to do it again I think that I could improve on the camera quality and the way I shot the film because some of the parts which people needed to see they were cut of. But I think that my strengths were editing because I tried to make it seem kind-of suspicious yet funny. Also I think that I did good keeping focused and trying to do my best and making sure that I didn’t get distracted.

Evaluate Video Reflection

During this unit we have been creating a tutorial by investigating (looking at other videos, researching what makes a good tutorial and creating a slideshow/presentation that was a draft but wasn’t the actual topic that we were going to do for our final.), planning (deciding what our tutorial is going to be about and creating a story board and a planning schedule for when we will film and edit, etc.) and last but not least creating our tutorial (Making the ACTUAL TUTORIAL!).

Overall I am happy with my project because I thought I showed some good examples of where to place your feet and how to get the order correct. Also I did good by putting the tips at the end of the tutorial video. I feel that this would help someone because maybe if they don’t remember how to do that certain thing then maybe they didn’t remember and so they can revise on what they learnt. Something I could improve on next time is making sure the sound quality is good and that the sound quality is good because I felt that I couldn’t really hear myself talking.

I think that I was quite productive in class considering I missed one lesson because I was sick. I got quite a bit of work done during this unit. In one lesson I had to complete the Tutorial story board and the plan before school ended so that was a good point for me because I realised that I needed to work harder if I wanted to finish this project.

I grew as a learner because even though I was teaching other people something I still learnt a lot of things. For example, I learnt on iMovie how to make a clip in to slow motion and fast forward it. But not only that, at the very beginning I learnt how to draw a dinosaur because that was the introduction to our unit and I also learnt that you need to have a clear voice and clear instructions or else the person watching won’t understand.

Digital citizenship week

Last week YIS had a digital citizenship week. Digital citizenship week is about learning what not to do when on a computer and what is good to do on a computer. For the whole week in tutor period we talked about the different types of bullying and what can happen online if your not careful. In technology we did an activity that related to this. We had to make some sort of advertisement or a video or anything that tells people one thing they should not do. I did a poster and the topic I chose was ”not going on social networking sites during class” because that can cause a CLC infraction. Here is a picture of what some of the sites are:

Technology Create reflection

When I was making my tutorial I learned a lot about iMovie and more of the skills. I now find it easier to use iMovie to make movies so that is one thing that will help me in the future. My video was on how to do a layup. I think that one of the things that I did good was adding points so that if the person couldn’t hear or understand what I was saying they would be able to see it.

I like the music I chose for my tutorial because it kind of (to me) seems like a tone that someone would use for a sporting advert so when I was making this tutorial I guess I was more thinking that I was making a quick advert. I also like the way I have put the points at the end of my tutorial so that the person doesn’t for get and the credits slide included everyone and everything that helped me out.

As a homework assignment, we had to comment on two other peoples blog from 6C and 6B. I commented on Keina’s blog and Annamaria’s blog. Keina’s topic was ”how to make a good presentation”. The tips in her tutorial that I think would help the most were making a script so that you don’t have to have all the things your going to say in the slide and having dot points instead of a script. Annamaria did ”music ettiquette”. I learned quite a bit from this considering I’m not in band. I learnt how I should sit before the concert starts and what to do when finished. I think that these are important things to know in case your music teacher or whoever doesn’t tell you how to do those skills.

For me it was kind of hard to make the tutorial because I had to fit in a time for when to film it and on the week I was supposed to film my tutorial I had a whole bunch of activities come up. That was one of the hardest things. Also finding people to help me and making sure that it fitted in with their schedule.

I think that I did really well making the tutorial step-by-step because I had a slide for each step. This would help people because if all the steps are in just one slide

  1. It makes it harder to edit
  2. It makes it harder for people to understand because you might be rushing so that it isn’t to long
  3. And last but not least you might not be speaking clearly enough.

The quality of the video was not the best because it was on my computer and I really should have used a hi-def camera so that the sound quality would be better and also the image. The image seemed to be really fuzzy when I filmed it on my iPhone so then I moved to plan B which was filming on my computer. The sound was also not really clear because I was in a big gymnasium which echoed a lot and it made my voice sound really quiet when I was shouting to make sure that it was loud enough. But when I saw the un-edited video and I heard the sound that was where Ms Cofino came up with the idea of having subtitles.

Overall I think that my tutorial was quite successful and that some people will be able to learn from it. The thing that I would want to improve on is getting the quality good and getting the sound quality a bit better because people might not be able to here and possibly not be able to see (which is why I but the tips in writing as well). Here is the video if you would like to check it out and thank-you for reading and watching :) :

Teachers of the Future: Plan

In technology class we have been learning all the steps to making a specifically detailed tutorial video that will teach other students, grown-ups and other people around the world how to do something tech related or something that is the persons passion. My topic is how to make a photo in to a link on EDU blogs. But anyways, right now we are up to the planning stage which is where we are planning out our tutorial video and how we are going to lay it out. This stage is quite complicated because we need to be able to control iMovie (iMovie is an application on an apple computer mainly but you can also get it on other computers as well. It is used for editing videos and making them.) so that the video doesn’t look really bad. We also need to know what we are doing. For example, if you were teaching someone how to add music in to a movie that you created on iMovie and you didn’t know how to or you didn’t give enough detail, then that is going to be a falling point of how you present your work, it also effects the person watching your video because if you don’t know what your doing then how are they supposed to know as well? But Ms. Cofino (our technology teacher) made a plan sheet so that none of those things happen. This is a picture of what it looks like:

By the way this is a screenshot so I didn't take it illegally from the internet.

We also had to make a tutorial plan storyboard to help us plan out how it will look and this is what it looks like:

I think that the most important priority about my plan is the editing stage because if one thing goes wrong then it is really hard to undo it. Also you need to add music, titles, transitions, etc. And it also takes a really long time to get everything perfect because like I said before, if you mess up on just one thing then that is going to be the falling point of how you present your tutorial video.

I have ten different stages for my tutorial plan. The first one is to open up Quicktime Player (Another application that you can use on any kind of computer and it is used for screen recordings, audio recordings, video recordings, etc.) and set up the voice and screen recording so that whilst I’m talking people can see what I’m doing. The second step is to go to my blog and log in. Then start filming on Quicktime Player because with the next step I need people to see what picture I’m getting and how to drag it to the desktop. Then I have to insert the photo in to my post with the link and then post the photo on to my blog. And then the final step of the video is to click on the photo once it has been posted to check if the link works and takes us to the website where I found the photo. And then I have lots more other steps which all include editing.

I think that the design of my tutorial is good because it gives a lot of detail and is specific and slows down when it comes to the important parts. The four most important criteria for me are step-by-step because if I don’t have my tutorial slow enough then people won’t be able to follow which brings me to my next criteria which is pacing. Clear steps so that it is detailed and my last criteria is that I give lots of examples so the watcher knows what to do instead of not seeing anything.

I think that viewers will be able to learn from my tutorial video because it is detailed, gives lots of examples, i step-by-step and the pacing is perfect so that people can have time to catch up and do the certain step they are on. Also an extra thing that I added was repeating things just in case the viewer didn’t get the first part.

I don’t think I need to learn anything else about making a tutorial because the skills on iMovie are easy to learn. Well actually coincidentally I watched a tutorial video on how to do all the iMovie skills.

Teachers of the Future: Investigate Reflection

In technology class we had to view other peoples blogs to see what tutorial videos they chose and why they were good. We looked at other peoples blogs because we needed to get ideas for our videos.

I learnt a lot from Marina’s video because it was how to cut the inside of a pineapple. I learnt that you have to be careful where you cut or else the whole thing could go wrong. I also watched Annamaria’s favourite tutorial video. I thought it was good because he spoke clearly and showed what he was doing. He also gave a reasonable amount of examples. This is my tutorial research google doc. and this is what our class (6A) thinks makes a good tutorial video:

I learnt that to make a tutorial video, you have to have a clear voice and you need to be able to give really specific instructions. Also it is good to give lots of examples and slow it down when it gets to the important parts so that the person seeing the video doesn’t screw up and they don’t put bad comments. I think it is important to have those things in a tutorial video because then the person will watch more of your videos and not post bad comments.

I think that my video was probably the best (not to be a narcissus or anything) because even though I wasn’t speaking but I gave clear instructions in the slide show and I thought that they were specific and I wrote them in the way that I would if I was talking.

Tell me what you think about my slideshow and give me ideas of what to do for my next tutorial video in the comment box down below so I can make another tutorial video that is something that you guys want. :D

Tutorial Research: How to curve a soccer ball

In technology class we are learning about why it is good to make a tutorial video and how it can help us. For the first part we had to watch tutorial videos about anything we wanted and then we had to answer questions about why the video was good, what the person who created it did well and what they could improve. The video that I chose was how to curve a soccer ball. I thought that this video was good because the person spoke with a clear voice and showed lots of examples. Feel free to comment down below in the comment box because I would like to see why you think that this is a good tutorial and how the person can improve it.
Thank-you!!!

Evaluate Reflection

I am happy with my finished blog design because I feel like it really explains a lot about me. My top features of my blog are probably the RSS feed sign because I like the way that it hides behind the drop-down categories bar and when you wave your mouse over it, it pops up. The thing that I would want to change the most would have to be the way the title of the blog is presented. Mainly because I wanted my header to have a lightning strike going through it or on the corner of it. The reason that I chose the lightning strike was because I think that the symbol represents me by being quick with work. The best part about the unit was making our design for our blog because we got to put the things that we like and our favourite colours, symbols, etc. But the main reason why I like this unit is because it gave us a chance to use our own creativity and to show what our personality is.

My strength for this project were probably making the design for our blog and doing the ‘How to grow a blog plan‘ sheet. My weaknesses were coming up with ideas for my blog design, choosing a theme that almost matches my design and writing the create reflection.

I can use the skills that we learnt, in the future by teaching other people them. The reason I would like to teach other people these skills is so that they can have more knowledge about technology and the advantages that we have. The are some pictures and screenshots of the projects that we have done:

Create Reflection

In this unit, we have created blog designs that we think would suit our personality and our blog. Unfortunately, my design was to complicated, especially how I had the lightning strike in the title but the design that I currently have on my blog is as close as it’s is going to get to my design that I drew. So, we created designs for our blogs, tried to find a computer generated design that was close to our design that we drew.

I am quite happy with my blog theme because it explains a lot about me. For example, the black background symbolises that I am shy but the colour at the top means that when I have an idea I just blurt it out and I all of a sudden am not shy anymore. Also the little RSS feed sign that hides behind the header with the drop down categories means that I like to hide my feelings or some of my ideas. And the little games on my blog symbolise that I like to have fun.

I proud of the fact that other people are looking at my blog and that just makes me feel like people find the things that I write interesting. I know that other people are visiting because of my flag counter and my map. I think the reason that other people are looking at my blog is because of the theme and also the latest posts that I have put on.

The thing that I want to learn the most is how to make a custom title because I really want to have my symbol which is the lightning strike because It also represents me by being AWESOME!! But also because I like the way it flickers in the night.

I have really enjoyed doing this unit because it has given us a chance to show our creativity and what we can do to make our blog better. But the part that I really enjoyed was drawing our design.
