This week in Vocal we have been studying about blues. We have been studying about all the significant noises and styles.

Delta Blues:

The Delta blues is one of the earliest styles of blues music. It originated from Memphis, Tennessee, and Vicksburg. Since the Delta is famous for its fertile soil and poverty this could be the reason why such great music was created. Also the Delta blues are played with harmonica, a guitar, or a cigar box guitar.

Memphis Blues:

Memphis bues is one of the styles of blues that was created around the 1910′s and the 1930′s around the the Memphis area musicians. For example, Furry Lewis, Sleepy John Ests, and Frank Stokes. The memphis blues are usually played with electric guitar, piano, drums, and harmonica. This type of music was very popular in medicine shows. This music is often described as a depressed mood. This type of music took a big part on the development of Rock and roll, electric blues, and blues rock.

Chicago Blues:

Chicago blues is I think sounds more electric and like rock than most of the other music styles. Even early rock and rollers like Eric Clapton in his later years started playing blues music like the Chicago blues. Chicago blues was developed mostly by the delta blues but made it more electric and louder. This music was created around the Great Migration when the slaves in South America moved to North America such as Chicago. At first the music was a street side corner music that people played for fun. Then it became very popular but it was not known much to the white community since black music was not that well known then. However, as the years passed by more and more white people came to these clubs that played chicago blues which triggered more of these music to be played to the white audiences. Then worldwide.

Overall what I have noticed while researching these music styles were that the styles influenced each other. Also that most of the music was made in a community and love. i think that most music now is made out of commercial prepossess and not from the community.

On November we have just finished our unit of visual journaling. After that unit we carried on the line techniques we learned in the visual journaling unit. This time our unit question is “How can we communicate visually?”. Our significant concept is “Line can convey shape, texture and tone.”. In this project we had to combine 2 to 3 pictures. I chose a snowy mountain, a deer, and trees filled with snow.

Picture #1

Picture #2

Picture #3

I think the one of my weaknesses was my trees. They do not really show any kind of tone. Sometimes you cannot really tell they are even trees at all. For example the right hand side of the tall tree in the middle with the deer; the tree is hardly bold and it looks like noodles in the middle of a line drawing. Also the scumbling in the bottom of the trees seems to be blending into the trees. Also I was meant to make the trees have snow on them but (oops!) bad mistake I made the lines too dark. Which does not really help on the contrary that the ground looks like it has snow on it since there is not that much grass lines on the ground.

My Line Drawing

Overall I think the challenging things about the line drawings I have been doing for the past couple of weeks were application. It was a challenge to also do the drawings in time. I think the most challenging line technique is the stippling. The reason that I found the stippling challenging (And I bet that most of my classmates were) is that it is a very delicate process. Stippling may look easy but to find a way to bring out the tones are hard. It is not just like stabbing the paper with a pen and you just get dots. You need to figure out the crowding of the dots. You need to crowd the dots when you want a darker shade, but when you spread the dots more it becomes lighter. Also scumbling, contour hatching, and random hatching were also challenging but not as much as stippling though. Also we learned the rule of thirds. As of the dictionary is, “The rule of thirds is a compositional rule of thumb in visual arts such as painting, photography and design.”. In words it is a way to lay out art so it looks organized and nice. We also had to make many practice drawings too. This includes trying to draw Van Gogh line drawings and using field studies photos and put them into line drawings.

Line Drawing #1

This unit has been interesting and more challenging for me. The reason to that is not that you are drawing something you see. you’re drawing what you see and giving a twist to it by making it look interesting with lines. In the last unit we had to be creative and use our imagination. Also in our previous units we did actually drew what we saw. For example, our self portraits. Now this is drawing what we see with a twist.

In PE class we have been studying about good sportsmanship. For homework we had to find a good a example of good sportsmanship.

What I found they in this years American football quarter finals where this certain player called Peyton Manning one of Denver Bronco’s prized player that has been going against Ray Lewis from the Baltimore ravens. They both been rivals for about 15 years and always been battling each other considering their positions in playoff games. However, after the second over time leading to the 4th longest

game in football in history, in the -15 degrees cold Peyton Manning threw an interception that lead the ravens to make a field goal. Manning’s team had only 30 seconds left just to win the game but blew it by throwing an interception.

What was amazing was not just that, after the game after Peyton Manning cried in the changing room, took a shower, got into a suit, and did the interviews. Probably if you just lost to your arch-nemesis, made the bad throw which cost you the game that held your one shot to the super bowl, and it was around mid night you would want to go home by then. However, Peyton Manning stayed, with his wife and child to wait for Rey Lewis, his arch-nemesis for about 40 minutes just to talk to him and congratulate him for his game.

What I think shows good sportsmanship is that you would probably hate your enemy that you have lost to and blowed off your future chances, but instead of hating him he bothered to wait 40 minutes and say congratulations to him. What I think good sportsmanship is not hating whomever you lose to. Is that you have respect for players you play with and be kind to them. I am amazed to what Peyton Manning did, because I don’t think I would have probably done that either. I don’t think I know that many people who would probably bother doing this to their nemesis. That is why I chose this article, because of the effort Peyton Manning put into this meeting.

If you want to know more information on this article click here. Thank you for reading this and seeing what real sportsmanship is like. I have also learned a lot of things myself to just reading this article.

What is an atom? Describe the different parts and state where they can be found in an atom

Atoms are collections of tiny bit of electricity which are protons, neutrons, and electrons. They are so small that you can see them through microscopes.

What is an element? Give three examples of an element and give a use in the real world for each of these elements

An elememnt is a substance that contains only one kind atom. For example, gold, silver and mercury is a element. Also as known Gold and Silver are used for medels used to prize winners in games. Also is gold and silver is considered very valuable since the beginning of civilization. Mercury is used in thermometers, and filling for teeth.

What is a molecule? Give three examples of a molecule and give a use in the real world for each of these elements

A molecule is a group of atoms bonded together. For example, O2, and H2O.O2 is used when you breathe air. Of O2 didn’t exist we cannot live nor any living thing on this earth.H2O is water so of course our bodies contains mostly water. Also we cannot survive without drinking H2O everyday.

What is a compound? Give three examples of a compound and give an use for each one

A thing that is composed of two or more separate elements. For example, CO2, and NH3. CO2 is used in dried ice and also we exhale CO2 all the time. Also NH3 is used in fertilizing solutions and the US is producing a huge amount of NH3 every year.

What is a physical change? Give an example

Physical change occurs when here has been a change in state. For example, when ice turns into water. This is a physical change. Physical changes are mostly what happens when a solid, liquid or gas, turns into any of the solid, liquid or gas. No mass is lost in this process.

What is a chemical change? Give a few different examples

A chemical change occurs when a new chemical or substance is found. For example, if you put Magnesium, and Hydrochloric Acid together, you get, Hydrogen and Magnesium chloride. Usually when a chemical change happens it involves explosions. Again no mass is lost or added.

I think that Chloé should of have looked at her surrounding before she said she can’t find it. Also she should have checked her purse, because why would she have it in her pocket if she doesn’t want to lose it. Even after that she couldn’t find it one of friends should have left the cafe and go to their house to quickly get more money if it is near by. While that they order more so that it does not look suspicious.

So far in drama we have been looking at body language. This means looking at posture, facial expressions, and gestures. For homework we were supposed to look at a Charlie Chaplin silent film and analyse the body language. The video is Smile, from one of Charlie Chaplin’s movies Modern Times in 1936. I hope you enjoy

In the beginning a word appears on the screen, “Dawn”. Then they show a shot of a highway that starts hovering over to a couple the man(Charlie Chaplin) is tying his shoe lace and the woman is tying a knot on a piece of cloth. You can tell as they zoom into the woman that the woman is unhappy with the frustrated expression she has on her face, her tendency of sighing in a frustrated way, and her posture is slouched. Then she leans onto a rock next to her and starts crying. You can tell she is crying, because that she is shivering and wiggling at the same time when she is doing this and she is hiding her face with her arm. Which people do at times to hide that they are crying. The man at first does not notice this, because he is too occupied on tying his shoe lace. Then he notices you when he steals a glance at the woman and see that she is crying immediately tries to comfort her. You can tell when he notices that the woman is crying that the man cares, because of his facial expression on his face when he sees what happens. The first thing he does is that he put one hand on the back of the woman and the other to pull her arm away so he can lift her up to see her face. Then the woman says “What’s the use of trying?”. After the man hears this he tightens his posture meaning that he thinks he needs to encourage her so that they can go on. Then he says “Buck up- never say die. We’ll get along.”. Then he starts talking to her with making a fist with his hand and bringing it up and down implying that he is saying to her things like, “Stay strong.”. The woman is affected by this encouragement and starts doing the same hand gesture as the man did meaning she is staying “I will stay strong.”. Then the man smiles and the couple sit up with the woman’s hand around the man’s arm. They start walking down the highway and the man stops the woman for a second while walking and points at his face and gestures his hand pointing at his lips while a big smile goes across his face. This is indicating that he is saying to her to smile and the woman smiles back. Then you see the happy couple walk along the road then the screens goes black with letter showing on the screen “The End”.

I think silent films are funny in their own ways especially Charlie Chaplin though I would not watch it on a daily basis.
