If you’ve visited my blog before, you might have notice, or come upon this page: Showcase Portfolio. Every year, we reflect on our goals and what we’ve succeeded for the year. Showcase Portfolio is for me, as a student to share my strengths and weaknesses; something I’ve found interesting in, or either something that I enjoyed or like to improve on my school works. In my showcase portfolio, I will be focusing on four ATL skills. Three that I have achieved successfully on, and one to improve on.
1) Communication skills: Communicating
Spanish: Mis vacaciones en Colombia presentation
I included this piece because I was able to write and speak coherently to my classmates about the speech on “My vacation in Columbia”. What I learned from this piece was that it isn’t difficult to communicate what you want to say in a language you don’t normally use in your everyday situation; as long as you put in your best effort, you are able to deliver the message clearly. The next steps that I will take from this piece of work and experience, is that I would like to communicate more .
Drama: Why is it important to go to school? -Speech
I included this piece because I had an organised structure for the speech and I feel that it was simple to follow through. What I learned from this piece was that if you are capable of constructing a clear structure for your speech, other people, as well as yourself can easily follow through it. The next steps that I will take from this experience is since I was unable to deliver my message effectively, I should focus on practicing the speech more rather than put all my attention on the structure of the speech.
Individuals & Societies: Annotations of important parts of Yokohama
I included this piece because for each annotations, we had to explain what made a particular part of Yokohama so significant in a required amount of 15 words. And for that reason, I feel that I annotated efficiently and understandably. What I learned from the annotation work is that in order to communicate something in a limited amount of words, you have to know which ones are relevant. The next step that I will take from this piece of work is that if I were to explain something given a short amount of time, I should be precise and specific.
2) Media Literacy: The ability to access, analyse, evaluate, and create media(Definition from here).
Design: Survival Fashion
I think media literacy is something I have achieved for the majority of my classes. I included this piece because on criterion A where did the research, I was able to analyse/evaluate which information would help me to the next step in creating the actual clothes. What I learned from this part of work was that you shouldn’t use a source too quickly just like you would judge a book by its cover because you might not be actually using it and it would be a bit of a waste. The next step that I will take from this experience is that whenever I use a particular media, I want to be able to briefly analyse it.
I included this piece because my partner and I were given a topic that was something new for us, so we both had to carefully decide which media was suitable. What I learned from this piece of work is to choose a media(website) that is an appropriate level for you. This is because many of our sources included astronomy vocabularies by which were not easily comprehensible. The next step that I will take from this experience is to choose wisely of what media I will be using.
3) Thinking skills: Creative thinking
English: Bob(from the Outsiders) perspective
I included this piece of work since this writing was just a preparation for our assessment and wasn’t graded; I was able to visualise what Bob was thinking about the day he was killed. What I learned from this piece of work is that whenever I am asked to write a creative piece that includes characters, I have to set myself as if I am the character. However, when I was writing this piece I still had to stay on topic and simply replace the protagonist. The next step that I will achieve from this piece of work is to expand my creativity and take more risks, as this will be a new challenge.
Visual Art: Ceramic Piece
I included this piece because I tried to draw as many different sketches of my cup while thinking about my specifications. What I learned from this is that the more I sketched ideas, the more options I had when it came to deciding my final design. The next step that I will achieve from this experience is to not only create one idea, but three or more so that in result, I can just simply choose the best one.
Japanese: 弟子入り物語(A story about a disciple)
I included this piece because out of all the criteria, I especially worked hard on criterion c (producing text) for this assessment. What I learned from this piece of work was that if you have ideas running through your head, just keep writing. Then you can come back to it later and fix it up because you might lose it later. The next step that I will take from this piece of work is to work on my vocabularies because I think I focused too much on creating the story, I have forgot about other important bits.
I included this piece because we are currently making a soundtrack using one motif for all ten scene choosing one particular genre of our own choice. What I learned so far from this was to be able to make a decisions but never to forget and explain why I made them. I also learned to describe things in depth and with clarity. The next step that I will take from this experience is to apply this to the real world. For instance, I could to explain to someone why I made thosw decisions.
4) Self-management skills: Affective skills- resilience
And last but not least, the IP skill that I want to improve the most on is self-management skills(affective skills) focusing mainly on resilience.
Math: Cycling Digits.
I included this piece because I lacked knowledge and understanding. What I learned from this was that just because you’re not the best at something doesn’t mean that you should quit because with mistakes, we are able to learn from it and try not to make that mistake again. The next step that I will like to take from this experience is to review all the questions, notes, and even tests so that I can understand it and be able to do it. I will avoid moving on to the next unit without knowing the previous one.
PE: Badminton Slideshow Test
I included this piece because I was unhappy about how I didn’t prepare enough for the test, that lead to poor results and negative thinking. What I learned from this was that you can still get better marks and to think positively. The next step that I will achieve from this experience is to pay attention during class and become inquisitive when in class discussions.
1) My goal is to make great efforts in all the criteria that I am assisted on by not only focusing on one criterion so that I can obtain better results and everything is more balanced.
2) My goal is to use intermediate benchmarks by writing down my assessments either digitally or on a not pad so that I can follow through it easily.
3) My goal is to manage my time wisely and avoid procrastination as possible by making an agenda for my tasks and use the app “Self-control” to refrain myself from social media and easily distractible apps.
