Make your mark(line drawing) Reflection

 

In art class, grade 7’s been doing line drawing. I had a lot of fun while doing this line drawing. I think that everyone’s drawing is all excellent!! It went very successful! Our school uses MYP to grade our work. Firstly, The Area of Interaction(AOI) is: Students will be encouraged to think, observe, solve problems and create compositions that utilize line and apply the skills taught to further develop their own learning  and drawing skills. Secondly, The Significant concept is: Line can be used to convey shape, texture and tone. Lastly, the unit question is: How can we communicate visually? Here is my final line drawing:

Our process went from one step and one step. Firstly, we went on practicing on drawing different types of line independently and also introduced the significant concept by drawing a line drawing by Vincent Van Gogh. Moreover, we had a discussion on our unit question: How can we communicate visually. We peer assessed on the work by last year grade 7 students too to have an idea of what are we going to do.

Secondly, discussed about the unit question: “How can we communicate visually?”. I was so shocked because I don’t even know what to write and how to answer it. Therefore, my art teacher Ms. Rude start to ask questions like what kind of clothes did you wear today, why do you think you meant by wearing it? I thought about it and I got the meaning of the question. I wrote down: “You can communicate visually by looking at the thing and just guessing why they meant to do that and emphasize the picture.” Moreover, we watched a video that teaches us the pen and ink line drawing techniques, meanwhile we use the techniques on a cube. I think is a very good practice to do it because I then can know exactly about the value in art(the lightness or darkness of a colour). We peer assessed on each other’s work which made more advantage. On the same day, we watched another video of the two big selected print artist Durer and Rembrandt. It was very interesting because while I learn about art, I also can learn about history!!

Thirdly, we watched a slide show showing all the different types of line, meanwhile we try to draw it in different types of shape also adding the tone and the value. As you can see, I draw the light source to help me on the shadow. Moreover,we look at different types of Vincent Van Gogh’s line drawing and answering: “What line techniques are used? What are the direction of the lines? How were tones created? How have the lines been used to create shape?” in groups to warm up our knowledge.

After,  we did a work on compare and contrast two works. This is called Art Criticism. Everyone can choose two different artists’ lines drawing, chosen from Vincent Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Durer’s line drawing. However, I accidentally choose one oil painting, so I think I have to listen to the instruction more. We have to:

(The link on the bullet points goes to an Art Criticism chart) This work is for homework, it took me like 2-3hours to finish because I have to write a lot of things. I like Rembrandt’s one(the picture is below) better because it has more line techniques and the way he used the lines are very suit to the shape. I noticed that Rembrandt likes to draw things from bible or from the history a lot, whereas Van Gogh likes to draw something like nature scenery or modern scenery better.

Then, we started on planning our work and practicing out the final line drawing work. We started practicing line drawing(not using our own picture) on a  tracing paper. I think from this practice, I know what I need to improve on and what makes my final line drawing effective. After this practice, we have to plan how are we going to do on our final drawing. What I did was drawing 3 thumbnails describing briefly what I line techniques I am using.  Also, I practise my final drawing on some tracing papers for about 4 times, drawing different sections each times. I made a reflection for my whole planning and that leads to the final drawing!!!!

Finally, we have to draw our final drawing!! I used different types of marker and a lot of different types of line including: hatching, cross-hatching, hatching in two-directions, wave, stumbling, diagonally hatching, stippling and lines that look like grass. The hardest part in my picture us the middle building because the middle building needs a lot of details and perspective.  The easiet part in this picture is the building to the right because it doesn’t need a lot of details and the shadow for the building is very easy to draw. The parts I like about this drawing is the left building and the middle building because it looks very realistic. the parts I dislike about this drawing is the right building because I make it a little to slanting, so It looks strange. In addition, I don’t like the parts which are very messy. Hence, I should make the lines more neat if I can draw a line drawing again. I also can improve on the middle building because the details aren’t very clear in the middle building and I think some of the lines I use in the middle building doesn’t really match the shape.

Overall, I made a lot of improvements because of this art unit. I improved on the shadows technique in a drawing and improved knowledge on the idea of middle ground, foreground  background; the knowledge of different types of line techniques. For the final artwork,  I can improve on the middle building because the details aren’t very clear in the middle building and I think some of the lines I use in the middle building doesn’t really match the shape. In addition, the gradation in my final drawing is pretty good, so thats why it made my drawing very look realistic. The composition in my art went well because my artwork combined variety types of elements of art such as: line,shape,space,depth,texture etc. I think that my final drawing have a balance because if you separate the drawing into a half, you can see that the amount of white and black looks about the same. I can say that my final drawing really tone the colours up and some of the textures it looks like it’s rough, but it’s smooth. I really liked learning this unit and hopefully, I can use the knowledge of this unit to use in the future world.
