Why was Yokohama a special city?
Yokohama like many cities, was very cosmopolitan. It was one of the first ports to open in Japan and also the most successful. One of the major factors why Yokohama was special was that it helped launch the Japanese industrial revolution to gain new technologies from the west. Yokohama also was an important hub for trading, because of its location and ships. Yokohama was also one of the few exporters of silk, which was very valuable in the west. But unlike many cities, Yokohama fused its cultures to make a very unique environment.
