Unit 3 reflection

Hello,

We have just finished unit 3 in Spanish class and I am going to reflect on it in 4 different ways.

First I will do it using the movie and series of Harry Potter and comparing my learning with the movies/books. One thing that makes my work and progress like Harry potter is that I had to face many new things, rules and vocab and I quickly had to learn  how to use them and cope with them. Harry Potter also had to continuously do this in his adventures on Hogwarts.
Also In this unit I have had to keep on practicing my skills and  study continuously in order to make sure that I am ready to face big tasks and challenges ahead which was with me quizzes, assessments and of course, just communicating in Spanish. Harry Potter also always studied hi spells and magic knowledge in order to be prepared to face death eaters and the dark Lord.
Furthermore, this unit I had to make sure that I had good time management because also outside of class I had to make sure I balanced my Spanish work and studying well with work from from other classes and my after school activities. Harry Potter does this because he has a lot of work, but also has to balance it out with Quidditch which he has to train for a lot, this is sometimes very hard for him.
This unit, I have repeat many things over and over again to make sure it becomes easier for me when it comes to real life situations and of course the tests and assessments that come up. This was important because otherwise i wouldn’t get used to it which would cause me to be unfamiliar with how to actually apply what you just learned, in life which is is very important. In Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix this was also key because they couldn’t actually learn and do things in their defence against the dark arts classes because of professor Umbridge, this causes them to have to apply the real stuff out of class to get ready for the challenges where you actually need the skills.
Furthermore in this unit I have had to revise my old knowledge to make sure everything i did stays in my mind and adding the new and extra knowledge to it. In harry potter, he keeps on learning new spell.s and tricks in school, but he does always also practice and perform older spells to make sure that he can combine the things together so he is a 100% ready to face his challenges.
Also, in this unit i have used many different ways to study like my workbook, studyspanish and quizlet. This really helped me learn how the new concepts on different ways which helped me to make sure that I understand everything better that I do in Spanish class. Harry Potter has this because he learns things by just books, but also with different teachers on different ways, this allows him to know things better because he learns things from so many different sources.
Finally, in this unit I have improved on my Spanish by always Writing down the things that I do not know and understand to expand my vocabulary which could then enhance my overall Spanish speaking, reading, listening and writing skills which could then help me further in this class. Harry potter also had this by always being keen about learning new things and asking his friends and family about what happened to his family and what the dark side is doing.

Also, in this class I have learned about with the best ways are to work and remember things that i have learned as well as possible. The analysing of texts that I do in Spanish class has helped me in many other classes because now I look at texts more critically and also in English and other Subjects, I am trying to learn more and more vocabulary so I always ask or make a note about things that I don’t know so i can expand my knowledge and understanding about many new things and concepts which will help me in many further stages in life.

If I had to create a headline about my learning in this unit it would be: ‘Hard with struggles but paying off in the end’. it would be like this because in this unit, I was struggling with the new concepts and different kinds of conjugations. But I think that at the moment I am practicing and improving constantly to make sure that I do well at everything that we have learned at the end of the unit.

And finally I chose to for my learning, tell about how I felt during this unit with all my work and with that progress. At the beginning of this unit with the preterite tense, I was nervous because it were so many more new things that I had to do and learn in order to be comfortable with this. Also, throughout the unit I found that it was still hard to get to know all the important material of what we did in class and I was struggling a bit with making sure that I conjugated everything well in the preterite tense and did it in the right form. I was a bit stressed about this but that did motivate me to practice even harder to make sure that I learned everything that was important as quick and well as possible in order to make sure I’m on track. I think that now i feel more positive because I have practiced a lot on this and because of that, feel more comfortable with conjugating in the preterite tense in Spanish. I think that even though we are still going, I can feel proud of the level i am at and be ready for the challenges and tests ahead.

Overall, I think that at the start of the unit I found some things hard but throughout the unit I practiced which caused me to know how to do the things we had to and learn throughout this unit.

How does memory work?

Hello,

In I&S class we have been working on Psychology, how we remember things and a lot more.

I have read an article of how memory works and how our brain remembers things and makes it long term memory or just stays short term memory and you eventually forget.
In the article, there was lots of new vocabulary for me and I will write down the key new vocabulary that I have learned in this article.

The new vocabulary

Neurons are nerve cells located throughout the whole nervous system and the central nervous system which communicate through synaptic connections.
Synaptic connections are structures that send specific impulses and signals in between neurons inside the nervous system when a certain kind of neurotransmitters allow the impulse to pass further through the neurons nervous system.
Neurotransmitters are chemicals that work to bring a certain signal or impulse from neuron to neuron in a synapse
Long-term Potentiation is when a certain signal comes back many times and the synapses become stronger because the brain created a ‘strengthened synaptic contact which sort of puts the thing on your contact list which you will remember if you keep it strong. which also makes is easier to communicate with that specific person then.
Consolidated means that something becomes more stronger or more solid and firm than it was before.

Paragraph

Memory inside the brain is not like a cabinet that all the things you experience and witness get stored in and when you need to use this information later on, you can just recall it easily and then re-use it. It is not sure how the brain works but many scientists predict that the neurons, neurotransmitters and synaptic connections make us remember things in our long-term potentiation. The way we get things to our long term memory is by recalling it many times. This makes this same signal travel through your neurons, and synapses often which makes it easier for that same impulse to travel the same way every time and it consolidates. Because of this it becomes a long-term potentiation and comes in your long term memory.

Spanish end of unit reflection

Hello, we have just finished our Spanish unit and I think I have achieved many things. First of all, I think that throughout this unit, I have refreshed on about all the things we have learned last year so I can use them this year. Also to add on to what I already knew, I have learned a lot of new vocabulary and grammar techniques and used them in my pieces of writing to show my understanding and enhance the quality of my work.
Furthermore I think my level of speaking also went up because of all the new things I learned this unit and apply them in my conversations. Also when I talk and I want to know a specific word is in Spanish or what an english word is in Spanish. This also bit by bit makes it easier for me to have even fuller and better conversations for both speaking and listening. I think I should keep on doing these things so I can make sure my Spanish keeps improving and I can do things speaking and writing easier.

Nature vs Nurture

Nature vs Nurture

Nature vs Nurture us a debate that has been going on for a long time in Psychology. Children can have specific things from their parents and ancestors, but also have to develop many things in their childhood and further life.
My definition of nature in this case of Psychology is when a child has a certain, physical characteristic, ability, behaviour, like or dislike that they naturally have or got from their parents or that they have got in theirselves when they were born and that not has to do anything of the way of the child was being raised.
My definition of nurture is when A child has a physical characteristic, ability, behaviour, like or dislike that they got when they were raised or have practiced somewhere during their life.

The Nature vs nurture debate is about whether certain things or behaviours that children have are nature or just nurture. Psychological studies conducted by Heinz show that children from specific genders which in this case monkeys, many times like toys that are typically for their gender, this was clear because most of the female monkeys got the girly and pink toys while the boys got the boy toys like trucks and helicopters. This clearly shows that in most cases, it is in our genes which kind of toys and things we like to have and play with which clearly shows we do these things and like those things from our nature.
Also a Psychological experiment conducted by Cambridge University shows that adults and parents give the children toys according to their gender because if they heard a specific child was a boy, they would give the kid boy toys and with girls the same. But the thing that they did was that they switched some boys and girls around and said that it was a girl while it was a boy and the same for the opposite gender. The adults got toys for boys when they thought it was a boy and the same for when they thought the baby was a girl. In some cases the children clearly didn’t like the other toys which is partially nature but as you can see, the parents also stereotype what the babies like by their gender which is clearly a part of nurture.

My Spanish goals

Hello

For Spanish class we had to create some goals  that we wanted to achieve in Spanish class this year. In this post I will list them.

Goal 1

My first goal is that by the end of this unit, to be able to be able to use at least 90% the Spanish verbs and basic language we have learned last year and are revising now using written and spoken communication. I will do this by looking through my old Spanish folder, notebook and workbook to revise the material that I have learned last year and because of that refresh my mind. I think this is very important for me to do this because this will make it easier for me to communicate in Spanish in class, do written and spoken tasks better and finally to make it easier to learn new material because I already know the basics.

Goal 2

My second goal is that by the end of this semester to master all the verb conjugations that we learned last year an what is necessary for this semester. I will do this by trying to make lists in my notebook that say the rows of the types of conjugations like the yo and nosotros conjugations on the side and then writing a verb at the top of the page. Then I’ll write the word down but then conjugated for that was listed on the side. I will do this for as many verbs possible. I think this is important because this will make it easier to talk to people and to write letters or other written messages.

Goal 3

And finally, my last goal for this whole year is to take as many notes as I can in my notebook when we are learning important new material. I have not done this very much last year but I think it could really come in handy for practicing for upcoming tests and assessments. And so finally this could make my revising easier because I have my notes ready to use.

Thank you for reading!

My unit progress

Hello,

In music class we are working on our unit of soundtracks and with half of the class we are working on the Hedwigs theme which is the theme song of the movie Harry Potter. I have improved and developed on many aspects and I am going to explain a few of them in this post.

I learned how to play my part by first by playing parts step by step. At the very beginning I did not know yet how to play the song properly so I started to play the very first part many times until I completely mastered it and could play it comfortably without having to think about the notes that I should play. After that I can add another bit of music to add onto the part I already know how to play. I then practice until I can play those 2 pieces smoothly. I use this technique repetitively and play what I know many times in between until I have mastered the whole song. When I knew the whole song I continued my progress to finally play together with the whole class at the MS concert.

At this moment I could Improve my playing for the concert by only playing with one hand because it is inconvienient when I play it with 2 hands because then if I maybe have to play the chords later of this or another song, I would not be able to play them at the same time which is a key part of playing the piano.

After that I started playing together with my classmates including Sarah, that helped me develop my skills on the piano and playing Hedwig’s theme because my rhythm in my individual playing was not very consistent and accurate. I did this by after I practiced my piece or a part of it, I would play together with a classmate so I could get used to playing my song and the piece that I learned at the correct speed and playing at the correct side of the piano so the combination of the two players would sound better. This is/was a key part when playing as a group/duo on one piano because we have to share piano during the actual piece and this would help me get used to playing the piano like this. Now after practicing in a duo, our playing sounded nice and synchronized which is important during a performance in a group.

At this moment I could Improve my playing by repeating this step many times to make sure that I play everything correctly and that I am ready to play as a whole class and after that for the final performance.

And finally the final step I improved on during my progress was when I mastered the whole song to correctly start playing at the correct moment because after I learned how to play the melody, I got another music sheet which showed what we needed to play but also when to play while playing as a group which I didn’t yet know. So, when I got the music sheet I first practiced myself to try to master it by myself. After I practiced the song using the new timing I practiced with the whole class to make sure everyone plays at the correct time of the performance and in sink. This sounded a lot better than by myself because of the wide variety of instruments we used during our performance. Because we were under time pressure the whole class including me worked hard to play together as one band to get ready for the final performance at the MS concert a little while later.

I think when we were done with my final practice I had mastered everything that I needed for playing the song and was ready for the performance, because of this I had the feeling that I was completely ready to perform at the spring concert.

And finally, at the day of the concert, about all of the performers did well and I thought that we mostly played better than all the practices in class and in the auditorium itself

I think I could have Improved on during my practice time to practice to learn to the play notes without having to write down the letter form of the notes beforehand, this could let me extend my piano skills by being able to read the notes and being able to play them directly while seeing them.

Comedy Timeline

Hello,

In drama class we have been learning about comedy and I had to make a timeline/blog post about its history.

Comedy is and has been a big part in our daily lives and history. Because it has been such a great part of our history, it has originated very early and developed greatly to become even better and more famous.

Comedy all stared in ancient Greece about the 6th century before the year 0. Then there was only a very narrow amount of various styles and genres of comedy. One of the first comic artists was called Aristophanes, his work and style of comedy included things like saying things about politicians, philosophers and other (comic) artists. Furthermore, comedy was not only expressed and showed by live characters, but sometimes also it was also showed on objects such as pottery, on there there were drawings of people dressed like horses and dancers in excessive costumes. Furthermore comedy by Archilochus and (6th century before year 0) and Hipponax used poems about comedy which included alot of crude and sexual humour. Finally, there was also comedy in songs which were created by  a man called Aristotle which were mostly played during festivals.

Medieval comedy

In the middle ages comedy was kept t0 a minimum because of the church at that time, but comedy was still a major event at festivals and folk plays. In places like Italy and their style commedia dell’arte used a lot of silly expressions In their folk plays which was like in other countries one of the biggest sources of comedy at that time. Furthermore, comedy was kept on going by court jesters which were the clowns at that time. They were the clowns which entertained the King or other royal family member. They did their work in many different such as at dinner of if someone was sick so the clowns could make them feel better because of all the comedy used in the act.

Renaissance comics

The Renaissance had a different kind of comedy than we know today, for example, one of the main parts of a play was that made it comic was that there was a happy ending. One of the greatest playwrights of all time called Shakespeare lived during the Renaissance and has created many plays such as Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar which are still often-performed plays. A few elements of comedy that he used in his plays was Irony and embarrassment of the characters. This were the elements that he used in most of the plays he wrote.
Also in Italy comedy was a great part of all the plays and entertainment, Commedia dell Arte was still a big part of comedy. The main things that were included in this style of comedy were love intrigues and mystery like tricks of getting things of other people such as their money. Furthermore, a part of Commedia dell Arte included aerobics or Juggling; masks were often often used in this period of time and this style of comedy

Melodramatic Comics

Melodrama is a kind of comedy that was originated in the 18th century and is still used nowdays, It is used in pieces such as plays, on television and many times in movies. In melodrama characters are very extragged and stereotyped, this gives a very strong but simple character. In the 18th and the 19th century the actions in melodrama were usually accompanied by an orchestra or a song to make it more interesting to see and watch.

Circus comics

Clowns have originated a very long time ago and have evolved and developed over a long period of time. The clowns already existed for thousands of years like with the greeks  where they were no more than sometimes bald people who imitated serious people and did mime. Also during the time of the romans clowns were characters with a pointy hat, had robes and were robes and were targeted for tricks and abuse, they also did mime.  Nowdays, we have 4 main types of clowns: the whiteface clown, the Auguste clown, the tramp/hobo clown and the character clown. The whiteface clown is a clown that is sometimes pleasant looking, also in situations with other clowns the whiteface clown is the leader and is the one that bosses the others around. Furthermore, the whiteface clown’ face is completely covered in white except for some facial features such as the eyebrows, nose and mouth. The  Auguste clown is probably one of the most active clowns of all the clowns, they are mostly the troublemakers of the clowns and use a lot of slapstick and perform a lot of big pranks on others. The Auguste clown face makeup exists out of  variation of the colours red and and pink. Exaggerated parts of the face are mostly colored using the colours red and  black. The tramp or hobo clown is the sad clown who does the stupid jobs such as cleaning after the others make a mess. The tramp or hobo clown often wears dark and ripped clothes to create a strong unhappy mood.  Finally, the character clown can be anything so the creator of the character can be very creative to clearly show the character of the clown. The make-up of the character clown can be anything from the previous clowns.

Cinematic comedy

One major part of the cinematic comedy were silent movies such as by Charlie Chaplin and were one of the very first film types/genres. Most Silent movies didn’t have any sound in the movie itself, but a whole orchestra accompanied the movie to  support the effect of the movie itself on the viewer. Most silent movies were drama, epic, romance and comedy (mostly slapstick). Most of the Silent movies included slapstick, this included things like practical jokes, accidents, stunts and chase scenes with cars and trains. Charlie Chaplin was a very famous silent movie actor who was one of the best at his time. He created many silent movies such as ‘the gold rush’ and ‘Chaplin’ which are still viewed and enjoyed by many people around the globe.
