My unit journey

During this unit in English class we have learned about Apartheid, in class we have done lots of assessments. Because of that we have much more knowledge about this topic and because of that I can tell more about it. In this post, I am going talk about my journey doing this unit. There are some concepts I have learned about during this unit that I found interesting. I am going to write about them in  this blog post.

In this unit, we have made an article about either Apartheid, Nelson Mandela, Soweto uprising or colonialism. I chose Apartheid and in my article I wrote about Apartheid itself, Nelson Mandela and how Apartheid ended.   article .I hope you learned some things extra about Apartheid if you have read my article about it. We have also read a book called ‘Journey to Jo’burg’ by Beverly Naidoo. The book is about a brother and a sister who have to walk to Johannesburg to ask her mom for help because their little brother is sick. In this book, you really learn about Apartheid, the separation and also about the Soweto Uprising. We have analyzed  parts of Journey to Jo’burg and analyze things that made clear images for us. I think because of that my analyzing skills improved.

jtj4And finally we have watched a movie about Apartheid called ‘The Power Of one’. This movie is about  a British boy who grows up in South Africa and has to go to an Afrikaner school where he was bullied by Afrikaner boys. He experienced lots of adventures and helps the coloured people.

For learning about this subject I would rather watch a movie than read a book because I can understand better visually how it was then and how people were treated during Apartheid. I do think words are very powerful too, but visualizing it also brings a better message. We have learned lots of things during unit, one thing also was the injustice.

During Apartheid, injustice played a big role in daily life. The injustice was for the coloured people while the white people were treated very good. For many years the coloured people had no rights and were treated as second hand citizens. Separation also played a big role during Apartheid.

The white and coloured people were separated in lots of ways . One way is public usages: the blacks and whites had their own facilities. But mostly the facilities for the whites were better maintained. Those public facilities were things such as: water fountains, benches, toilets, busses and also places were separated and marked if they were for coloured or whites. I think if it happened to you, you would not be happy. Also the coloured people lived in other places than the whites. They lived in the outside of towns while the whites lived in the finest houses of the cities. Because of these things I think you can also tell that the white people felt they were more important than the coloured people. I don’t understand why the whites found themselves more important. The only difference between the whites and the colored and whites was the skin color.

The black people had enough of this injustice and separation so they protested against Apartheid. Protests were peaceful at the beginning. You might know it from Nelson Mandela. The white people did not listen to the peaceful protests and then the coloured people became angry and protests became violent. During the protests the whites fought, and they shot a lot of coloured people who were protesting. The coloured people had no way to fight back against the strong weapons of the white people. So all the white people had the power over South Africa.

The white people had all the power, and had nice lives, but that was  different for the coloured people. The white people were the only ones who could get in the government, so the control of the country was only held by white people. That was an advantage for the whites but it was a big disadvantage for the coloured people. The white people made some laws against the coloured people. The Apartheid laws were some of them. Because of those laws the separation became tremendous. And the coloured were left behind and treated badly. All this lead to very different lives of the coloured and the white people. I have also learned that the lives of the black and white people were very different in South Africa. The white people had a very pleasant life, had good jobs and had much money. Also the white children got a good education and were prepared well and learned good so they could be successful in the future. The black people did not have a pleasant life and did not have much money. Also the black children did not get a good education. The things they learned at school were things such as how to become a service girl or boy. I think the whites wanted that because they did not want that the black people to become smarter and would take the good jobs and the power from the white people. I think that is also a bit cowardly of the whites because I think they really wanted also to maintain the power of the whites in South Africa.

Although, all these events happened before I was born, it still affects the way we live now. This is because now people know that all people should be treated equally. However, in  daily life that does not always happen.  I  think people have also learned this from Apartheid and they don’t want that the horrible things that happened then, to happen  again.

I really enjoyed this unit about Apartheid because I have much more knowledge about the topic. Also we have learned to make articles and that was also fun to do. But Apartheid was also an important time in history, and I think people need to know about this subject. I think also reading the book and watching the movie gave me more information about Apartheid. From my perspective Apartheid was a sad time. But Apartheid is maybe still alive in some people.

  1. You did a really good job explaining your thoughts in this post. You did that really well. It made me think even deeper into the topic. You images were really well but your link were really noticeable and it didn’t flow with the paragraph. Other than that you did a great job!!
