Nature vs Nurture |I&S

We have been focusing on psychology and how humans behave differently than others and the reason why. One of the biggest debate that is still unresolved for over centuries, is how humans behaviour are affected by nature, or nurture.

The nature vs nurture debate over human behaviour are still remained as a mystery, and is widely debated in the society. Human’s behavior and actions are affected by what they were born with, such as genetics and emotions you cannot have full control over; the nature side, or is widely affected by nurture, which is what they been taught and influenced by. Human behavior are not black or white; it cannot be defined if its just nature or just nurture, but many scientist have been studying what kind of behavior are generally affected by.

Genders, are one of the popular topics in the debate, as if girls and boys were separated due to our environment and nurture, or if they were born differently from the start and have different specific genes. The nurture side of the opinion is that when the kids are still little and has no perspective on the society and gender roles, the adults and the society tend to push gender stereotypes to their children unintentionally. The nurture affects the kids to either behave like a ‘boy’  or as a ‘girl’. One of the study taken by the Cambridge University proves the nurture side of point, as the adults gave gender specific toys to the infants dressed up as the opposite gender, and insisted the kids to play the gender matching toys. However the nature side also has their opinion as well, which is equally evident as the nurture. The Hines study showed that when a infant monkey were presented with human toys, the male monkey chose boy toys, as the female monkey chose girl toys. This study supports the nature side of gender strongly, as these monkey weren’t taught to nurtured to choose those toys and still did.

This Nature vs Nurture debate has been unresolved for over centuries, as both sides have an equal opinion and study proving their point. Behavior are affected by both nature and nurture, and humans acts differently to others due to the combination of both. It is very difficult to justify which side are has a stronger evidence and point, and neither can be 100% for sure.

Religion and me

Our family doesn’t believe in a certain religion deeply, but in holidays we go visit temples and shrines which does relate to shinto religion and Buddhism. We go to our great-grandparent’s grave quite often with my grandparents. This is because our grandparents believed in Buddhism and when we arrive at the grave, we all read ‘Hannya Shingyo’ which is deeply related to Buddhism. Also in summer we make some cows that are made out of eggplant and horses that are made out of cucumbers. This is because theres is a certain period in summer where the dead can come back to our world from heaven or hell. We place the horse at first so they can ride it and come back fast, and place the cow in the end so the dead can go back slowly. I think the religion affected my life by learning more about my grandparents and what they believe in. Now that I think about it, we actually follow some religion without realising, since it kind of became a habit, or a little celebration our family does for fun.

Food Labels : Reflection |I&S

In I&S we did a project about problems in food label like obesity, child labor, carbon footprint, wasteful packaging and more. We researched about the problems and how we can raise awareness by food labels. Many consumers look at the food label when buying and it can catch their attention and tell them that the food they eat might lead to obesity or maybe there was a child labor behind it.

The researching went pretty well and smooth, since all of us worked productively during class. We also created roles so we can research about the problems more efficiently. Research was very easy since we chose a popular problem (like obesity) and there was tons and tons of sites and infos to look at.

I thought finding pictures for the analyzing was the most frustrating since I couldn’t find an interesting labels to look at, and most of the american labels were words and not pictures, which made it hard for us to find different types of labels in America.

We made 3 labels to raise awareness; obesity, child labor and wasteful packaging label. I thought that obesity was the easiest to make it into a label, I wanted my labels to be eye-catching yet disturbing, so it stays in the consumer’s memory. I decided to draw a fat, obese person to show that f you keep eating this product you will get over-weight. I also added some orange wave to show the fat you get if you eat 1 bag. Usually the food label of daily percentage are kind of fake, because of the serving size. But by making the daily percentage into a drawing, its more clear and easy to understand for the consumers. One thing I could’ve fixed was that I should’ve made the font for serving bigger. It looks very small and it looks like were trying to hide it from the consumer even though were trying to raise awareness.

I thought the wasteful packaging was the hardest to make it into a label. I first thought making a box full of plastic and saying that we use wasteful packaging, but the picture didn’t turn out well and it was hard to understand. I used Airi’s idea of using a package and writing that says ‘we don’t use wasteful packaging’ or ‘we use wasteful packaging’ and I used Vienna’s idea of drawing of a factory with pollution coming out. I thought both of them were good idea and by using Airi’s idea I got to express the idea of wasteful packaging more clearly. By using Vienna’s idea I got to express what happens if we keep on using the wasteful packaging.

For our group work, I think we did very well working together. We all worked evenly and productively during the class. Even though we had 4 people and we had to make 3 labels, we each gave ideas to each other and added the best ideas to create a label.

Overall, I thought this project was an interesting one to do, since we got to earn the real life problems that are happening right now, and how we can contribute and try to raise awareness for people.
