Community Engagement

Last year, when I was in grade 9, I was a member of the HOPE Cambodia service club and this year I am in part of Van der Poel.

To begin with, HOPE Cambodia is a service club at Yokohama International School, where we aimed to support the people in Cambodia by fundraising which is the significant part of this activity. In addition, this service club provides such as helping school construction and other several projects in Cambodia; volunteer for events in Japan (e.g. the rainbow walk); educate others about Cambodia. Furthermore, the sophomores, juniors, seniors are allowed to go to the Cambodia trip in February to help school construction and other projects. However, at that point, I was in grade 9 so we could not participate in the trip. Therefore, the next year, I continuously, joined the HOPE Cambodia service club. I have participated in more events than when I was a freshman. For example, I have participated in the donation during the food fair. Additionally, I have also created a sticker for advocacy. I have also volunteered to go on the trip, but it was canceled due to its lack of money that we have fundraised.

Next, Van der Poel is another service club at Yokohama International School, where we visit, Kodomo no Sono and Koufu Kodomo En, the local orphanages. Similarly to the HOPE Cambodia, our main mission is to collect money via fundraising and spend those for the orphanages by purchasing gifts for the Christmas party which is the main event of Van der Poel service club. In addition, one of a member from the Van der Poel and I went to the service leadership retreat, in order to understand our improvements in the future by also looking at the other service clubs.

Thus, these experiences will be essential to my current and future life since these services tell us who we are and what to develop as a leader. Throughout these experiences at the services, I have enhanced the word leadership where I used to think that this word was suitable for only the person at a higher status.

Wilderness Engagement

During October, Grade 9 went on hiking to Nigata. Through Tuesday to Thursday, we slept on the mountain for 3 days.

Throughout the expedition, I learned the basic skills for camping such as setting up the tent. Also, I learned how nature is very important, and being a great leader. This year’s expedition was different compared to any other years. It was survival.  It was very hard setting up the tent on the first day. The weather was terrible, the method and materials were complicated to understand.  However, my partner and I faced this challenge and on the last day, we did it smoothly. As I stated previously, I also learned that nature is important. My family doesn’t go for a hike and usually stay at home and play video games during the weekends. However, the trip taught the importance of nature and it was great experiencing these things. Finally, my most challenging thing was to communicate with the group and try to be a great leader. I say it was a great chance to take a risk to have and learn leadership.  Throughout the hiking, I have noticed that leadership can be anyone. For example, if someone was the leader of the group, but if you helped that person out such as discussion, I believe that you will also be the leader of the group. Even if you helped with a small thing, I say he or she took a risk to help the leader. Therefore, I believe that person is a leader.

I have developed my self-reliance by taking care of my body. I was responsible for taking care of my body because my partner and I slept early to prepare for next.

If I’m going for a hike next time, I will bring warmer clothes. It was very cold on the mountain and I thought I’m in the fridge.

My role in the community of the expedition and my connection with the YIS community is to keep up as being a leader of the group and taking the risk.

This experience made me think differently about the natural world. As I mentioned previously, my relationship with the natural world is that we should appreciate all the natures in the world and not always concerned about video games!

In addition, in March 2019, the sophomores went to the expedition, where we had an option to go either Nigata (English Adventure) or Philipines.  I decided to go to Nigata since all of my close friends went to Philipines. Not because I hated my friends or fought a day before the expedition. I thought that this was an ideal chance to interact with an acquaintance, especially the non-Japanese. This was tough than building a quinzee, but also contributed fun and a great experience to develop me as a person for the upcoming future as well. During the expedition, I honestly did not expect that without being with my friends will teach me something very significant that I have never gained in my life. I have realized this after we came back from the Nigata. I began to communicate more with various people in my grade which I gain this ability from the expedition.

Nature vs Nurture

In my opinion, the nature vs nurture debate is the debate over how people influence to the people today scientifically and culturally. For instance, during the class today (23/08/2017) we watched a short BBC clip about gender stereotype. They had an experiment of switching the gender of the toddler by changing their clothes. The researchers were checking to see what kind of toys that the volunteer would give to the toddler. The results showed, all of the adults handed out a vehicle toy such as car and truck immediately to the boy and gave a doll to the girl. This clip explained me how the environment around us including the people in that video affects how we developed from the beginning.

I think that our behaviour dictated by our genes and environment impacts us differently in various situations. For example, if you were an athlete, you may have the talent which are the genetics. However, you would also need to train which is the environment.

Dragon Day

Designing our project was… Pretty okay and fun doing it (I wasn’t here last time) because our group was about to change the roof to better place and when I came back to school (today), I thought it was great idea too.
Reasons I liked working with my group I liked working with my group because everyone supports each other and we did our work fairly. Also, I thought it was a good chance to talk with the other people that I don’t usually talk with him/her.
ATL skills that I used well Its really hard for me to answer this question because I wasn’t here yesterday but I think I used the communication skill effectively. It is because I communicated the people that I usually don’t talk like girls.
Great moments along the way The great moments was on the second day of school (08/23) starts. I liked when we’re doing the fashion show. That was the great moments during the Dragon Day.
One thing I learned from another group One thing I learned from one of a group is that they’re trying to have a semi Gin or services and Gin is not popular at all (sad).
Next time, I will Next time, I will try to go the first day of dragon day so I will not what will I do.
Something awesome that I contributed We did something awesome creating the video and the rap. It was fun.

Censorship in Books-Oral Presentation

During the presentation, I think I did better on my fluency than before (here’s the link for the old oral presentation) because I talked smooth and I did not really messed up or had disfluent. I also think that I did well with my partner such as researching and organizing the sources using EasyBib.

I can improve on organizing my time because my partner and I finished the research on the day before the oral presentation. Therefore, from the next time, we can Skype or text each other and finish the research bit more faster so we can finish and practice more.
