Mars Radiation Issue

Now, we all know that the atmosphere protects us from a lot and does a ton to make Tellus (Earth) naturally habitable. Including but not limited to; Radiation, Skin Cancer, Sealing Pressure, Sustaining a Habitable Temperature, Keeping Oxygen In, Burning Asteroids and Other Objects That Enter The Atmosphere (Batteries not Included). Now, not all of you know that it’s not the atmosphere itself that blocks most of the UV (ultraviolet) rays; the stuff that causes skin cancer, it’s a molecule: O3, AKA. ozone. Now ironically enough, the stuff that blocks UV rays is formed partially by UV rays. Here’s my simplified version; Oxygen (or O2) comes in contact with UV radiation and breaks apart (forming 2-O) the two separated oxygen atoms don’t like being alone so then grab on to a pair and turn it into a triplet (going from 3-O2 —> 2-O3) [just so I’m using vocabulary words, 3-O2 is/are the reactant(s), and 2-O3 is/are the product(s)]. So, Mars has an atmosphere that’s about 100x thinner than the one we have on Tellus (Earth). This means that a lot of gasses can escape and it will not protect us against a lot of the things that our atmosphere protects us. Now I want to address the issue of radiation, or more specifically, UV rays.

So I’ve come up with two (although, not the most brilliant) solutions. One, we create a ton of small structures that can isolate heat, maintaining a habitable temperature, but lets gas freely in and out, the roof will also be translucent so light can come in. This way, oxygen will be released into the atmosphere (from photosynthesis) and when it comes in contact with UV rays, some of it will turn into oxide, blocking the harmful rays. This will also remove a lot of the CO2 from the air (also from photosynthesis), create a thicker atmosphere, and give Mars some breathable air. So we have some room to breathe *badum ching*. My other solution is quite boring, have radiation-proof roofs (hey, that rhymed), and carry radiation “umbrellas” when you go out. Simple, and not that convenient. So I think I’m definitely leaning towards my first solution, because it solves more than 1 problem, and is a lot less boring.
