Censorship

What did you learn in the unit?

  • In this unit, I learnt about the numerous varieties of censorship and its effects on society. I learnt that censorship could exist anywhere; from books to video games :O I started off learning about the definition of censorship and its benefits. Presently reflecting, I can say that censorship is the act of overthrowing any products or results of one’s opinions or ideas mainly because they may be harmful/offensive to others. Furthermore, I have learnt the necessity of censorship over the course of this unit (I did not think censorship was important at the start of the year). Censorship stops the corruption and the plague of unwelcome ideas from entering society and damaging the lives of harmless citizens.

How did your opinions, perspective or understanding change or develop over the course of the unit?

  • Honestly, at the start of the unit, I thought that censorship was not necessary and that it was just an unnecessary act from the government. However, with the countless knowledge that I’ve acquired this year, my perspective has indefinitely changed.
    • Personally, I strongly claim that censorship is a beneficial act, and shall not be eliminated in the future. Many claim that censorship attacks one’s freedom. There is truth to be found here, for censorship does indeed restrict the press’s ability to publish otherwise subjective articles or newsletters that are almost entirely based off of opinion. Some accuse censorship of being fear driven. Perhaps this were true, if I lived in a distant dystopian society far into the future, but I do not. Censorship is not fear driven, censorship exists to protect large masses of people from damaging content. There is no reason to be found for any person or organisation to withdrawal information unless that person or persons felt it absolutely necessary. Again, I reiterate, we do not live in a totalitarian society where the government is conspiring against its citizens and must withhold valuable information from them as a result, at least, not in present day. Lastly, we have many multitudes who claim that censorship goes against human rights altogether. Many people believe that censorship takes away a person’s right to read and learn but this is only half the truth. Censorship does indeed take away from a person’s knowledge, but it can usually be justified. For example, if someone decides to not let a person into their home, should they be persecuted? Of course not, even though that person is being denied entry, or is censored, by the homeowner, that does not give him a right to barge in any  way and become knowledgeable of all that resides in the homeowner’s house.

     

How might this knowledge be relevant to your everyday life? Will it change any of your attitudes or day-to-day behaviours?

  • These valuable sources of information that I’ve gained in this unit will indefinitely change my everyday lifestyle. The fact that there are age-restrictions and inappropriate actions result to the consensus that I must control myself for my actions. This means that I limit my vocabulary, to appropriate words and make sensible decisions. Furthermore, I must be responsible for my choices and make wise decisions.

Film Shots Study Post

Lately, 6C have been learning about taking pictures from different angles and methods in English class. Film study has been fun in English so far. On Wednesday, (or was it?) we took many types of pictures at the rooftop of the YIS buildings. It was… successful! The fact that we (Eddie&I) were able to take pictures from different angles with the picture still in focus went particularly well. I learnt that film making is actually really complicated, with many angles and types of shots.
