Dissection of the Chicken and how it’s similar and different


In this picture you can see the ligament, which works basically the same as the human ligament, the only part that might be different is that in human arms there are muscles that go to our hands which make it so that we can move our fingers.


Here you can see the radius and ulna bones are also very similar to the human arms. Only much smaller.


Compared to the human arm the hinge of the chicken is much smaller and probably much weaker as well.


The bicep and tricep are much smaller than the human body.


The chickens ball and socket joint is much lighter and less manoeuvrable than the human body

Reflection on my Industrial Revolution Unit

The industrial revolution was a time when we were taking a big step into the world of machines. Mass production was possible with these machines and we were brought into a new light. But it was not just machines that did that. It was our outlook. Organisation and collaboration was needed so that we could band together to make decisions. Creativity was need to imagine our new society and to make the machines which made this world. It was truly an amazing moment in history.

 

It was not just I&S that we were looking at huge changes in society. In art we were looking at the renaissance were art was now looking at the real world. In english we were looking at persuasive writing to create our speeches and change peoples minds.

 

I think that many people would find the industrial revolution fascinating because without it, we would still be without energy. There would be no means of quick communication, no computers, no phones, no new big advancements in technology. There would be no cars, no trains. Not only would the new advancements be interesting looking awt how it got to it would be fascinating to see the difference in societies and how they saw things. Child labour for example, people in the industrial revolution thought it was fine to have kids working in a factory for 14 hours a day with bad meals and no sleep. They had terrible working and living conditions and 50% of them would die by the age of 12. Back then it was fine.

 

If I was in a different country I think that the Industrial Revolution would be seen very differently because in japan, we are looking at other countries history’s. If I was learning about it in america or britain I think that it would be very different and more biased because they would be embarrassed somewhat about their history. They might have watered down the conditions to make it seem not as bad. Or maybe not. Maybe what we are learning about for the industrial revolution is completely different from the truth. It would be very interesting to see what they teach in britain or america about the industrial revolution.

 

The things that I have learned through the industrial revolution has taught me to look at the whole picture. Making me look at other aspects of the topics that I am learning about in other subjects.such as english. In english we are learning about a book called house on mango street. Normally I would have just done the class work and not thought twice about it but now I am looking at it in much more detail.

 

Overall the Industrial Revolution was a great thing to learn about and I look forward to doing something like this again.

A Young Boy in a Big World

George shoemaker is a young boy trying to make a living in a factory. He is 12 years old and has been working at the factory for 4 years. As a child he was abused by his father and brother until at the age of 8 was rescued by some factory recruiters. He works Sams®. He is now   one of the most efficient workers and has made almost 100 pounds. He plans to create his own orphanage to make sure those who have suffered as he has will be able to get the proper necessities like food, shelter and social skills which will help their future.

Though he has come far. There are still many dangers, because of the factory having to deal with lawsuits. There are many nights when he goes hungry. Also, because of the lack of safety and long hours many of his friends receive injuries and are tired constantly.

Even though there are some problems with safety Sams® is still one of the best factories for children to work in. These factories are actually good because it makes the children have 2 hours of education everyday but it also allows children to learn about the economy and will teach them about how the real world works. One of the teachers, Connor O’reily says “Some of these kids have outstanding potential and are very eager to learn. Many of them stay here just to read more.”

It is very beneficial for poor children as well because it gives them something to do ad will help them support their families. They can even gain more money per day if they are willing to work overtime. These work conditions are very beneficial in teaching children the importance of money.

Over all Sams® factory is a very beneficial work space as it gives free education, housing and food. Even though there are some problems such as safety issues it is still worth the risk to create a future.

 

 

What Caused the Industrial Revolution

The thing that caused the Industrial Revolution was a combination of 6 things. Coal extraction, steam power, industrial production, iron smelting, agricultural production and the railroads. The most important factor was coal extraction, none of the other things would be there. Without coal there would be nothing to power the machines, so no industrial production. No steam power, so no railways and no iron smelting so no agricultural production. Although coal extraction may be the most important that does not mean that all the other aren’t. Agricultural production created opportunities for people to go and work in factories, boosting industrial production which gave a reason for steam power and railways. This made it so that goods could go from place to place in a quicker fashion. More people could extract coal, making a cycle in which would make a huge revolution completely changing people’s lives.


What’s in our phones?

We use our phones everyday. Sending e-mails, taking pictures, texting to friends, pretty much everything. But do we ever wonder what’s actually in them? In this post we will cover four materials that are in our phones. Gold, Tin, Tantalum and Tungsten. The place where these materials come from is Congo, China and Indonesia, but we will mostly look at Congo.

The first material we shall be looking at is gold, symbol is Au with an atomic number of 79. In our phones gold is used to coat the wires that are very small it is used because Gold is the highly efficient conductor that can carry these tiny currents and remain free of corrosion. Electronic components made with gold are highly reliable. Gold is used in connectors, switch and relay contacts, soldered joints, connecting wires and connection strips. They don’t use copper or silver because they quickly corrode in air, leaving the connectors with a thin layer of terribly low conductivity corrosion products.

The next material is tin, symbol Sn and with a atomic number of 50. Tin is used for soldering the connecting wires because tin has a very low melting point. Because of this it is very easy to coat wires that have a high melting point. Making it really easy to move electricity around.

The third material is Tantalum, symbol Ta and a atomic number of 73. Tantalum is used because it stores electricity and it is extremely stable at temperatures lower than 150 degrees Celsius, and needs exposure to hydrofluoric acid, one of the nastier acids out there, to cause corrosion. This protection from corrosion is due to a natural protective layer created by oxides of tantalum on the surface of the the metal; making the element a perfect match for use in structures exposed to the the elements.

Last but not least is Tungsten, symbol W and a atomic number of 74, right after tantalum. It is used in phones because it makes your phone vibrate Tungsten alloy vibrator is excellent material for making this component. Since the density of tungsten alloy is so high and the maximum density should be 18.6g/cm3. It is popular for the component needs great heaviness but small capacity, like mobile phone vibration.

Now that we have the materials lets go over the issues

What are possible ethical issues related to this material?
Many of the groups that are controlling the mines are going against human rights by sexually assaulting the people who don’t support their group.

What are possible government issues?
There are no government issues other than the lack of government. The mines are run by militia groups who spend the earnings on guns. The workers, who are forced live in horrible conditions and are treated as slaves.

To combat these issues though how can we help?
One of the things we can do get the school to ask apple if they could check the materials that are in our computers. We could send an email to them saying that we want them to make sure that they get conflict free materials. This will help because it will decrease the demand for conflict materials making the militia groups run out of business and the government can control the mines once more so the workers will be paid.

But why? It’s not our problem?
As an international school we look at helping other people. Ethically, not asking apple to check their materials is against our society’s attitude. It would go against of what we think.  Also by using conflict minerals we are helping the militia groups while we are saying that we would never do that. It is very hypocritical.

Empires and to get better

In what ways do you think you need to improve?
I think that when I work with a partner I need to stay on task instead of talking about other things. A lot of the time I would stay on task until the end and then thinking that I’m about done I would start talking with my partner. And then I would have to work on it at home.

Did you meet your standards?
Yes I did meet y standers but I think that I must have not worked hard enough or I read the TSC correctly because I did not get an 8 even when I though I would

What did/do you find frustrating about it?
One of things that I found frustrating about one of my pieces in I&S was that even though I had met all the TSC requirements I didn’t get an 8. It turns out that I have to pass all the TSC requirements  to get an 8.

What would you change if you had a chance to do this piece over again?
One of the things that I would change if I did this is I wouldn’t spend time on it at home because I didn’t really need to and I think if I worked on it harder in class.
