In this unit, I learned about interlocking motif designs. I had lots of fun making and creating my motif with my friends. My strengths in this unit were creating the actual design of the motif. In my motif, I had a huge “X” across the rubber and drew the Korean flag on the edges. There was also a “Vans” logo at the top of my motif. That really explained that I am interested in clothing and fashion. Another one of my strengths in this unit was developing ideas with my friends and thinking about what would satisfy me the best. There is a thing with me in art when I draw something and I think that I could do better, I start to think deeply about what I should do that would fit me the best. Some weaknesses I had during this unit was thinking of my ideas too late, which lead to unfinished work. Obviously, that really affected me throughout the unit but I think I can get better at it by reflecting. I think that my cultural influence in my motif could have been a lot better because, in both of my motifs, I had the same idea of drawing the Korean flag. My personal influence might improve a bit more by adding objects that I own, not what I want. I added a lot of stuff that I did want in my motif, but I actually never added what I adore.
One thing that was really important this unit was creating the motif so it can interlock. If I made the motif, but it never interlocked, it would be a failure. I feel like my motif does interlock, but it doesn’t interlock them to the level where it is amazing. A lot of people obviously worked really hard on this project, so did I, but I couldn’t really think of ideas. I interlocked my patterns so that at the top I drew circles at the top and it would make a circle shape. For my color unity, I did well. This is a photo of my color plan (PK: Pink, LB: Light Blue)
I personally think that it is color unified, because obviously at the corners there is “Pink Paper under Light Blue Ink” and in the middle (diamond shaped) there is “Brown Paper under Yellow Ink” and in the very middle “Yellow Paper under Brown Ink”. Many people might think that it is not color unified, but I think it is. For the corners, I chose “Pink and Light Blue” because those 2 colors are my favorite. It really expresses a feeling that I cannot really describe. In the middle, I chose “Yellow and Brown” because the diamond-shaped middle was the opposite.
Overall I think that my project did pretty well, my color unity, motif and everything else.
Technology is the solution to your problem.
Today in tech day I have learned about photography and stop motion. Both of the activities that I did had a meaning to it. For example, pinhole photography was a way of taking photos a long time ago. However, stop-motion was a cool thing people had created to make a 1-second film and connecting it together. In my opinion, I liked pinhole photography more than stop motion. It is because stop-motion is cool and all, but pinhole photography was an actual fun experience. The best part about it was when we went out and took the pictures. When we got the pictures back, it was a failure, but I think it was worth it to try it out and have fun with my friends.

How did your learning help you improve and learn to draw more realistically?
I have learned how to draw better and improve my drawing skills to make it look realistic/three-dimensional. Most of the time my blending stump really helped out and my 2B, 4B, 6B pencils. I came in a couple of times in Open Studio to practice my skills. For example in the beginning of this year when we drew our self-portraits, it was terrible. Now I see myself improving time by time. The highlights, shadows are also one of the things that made me improve the most. I have also really tried to concentrate and focus so that I can work harder without getting interrupted. Overall I have improved my shadow, proportion, and gradation. In my old self-portrait, I had none of that. In 10 weeks of time, I think I did a pretty impressive job on my self-portrait.

What 2 things would you do differently to make your drawings even better?
2 things I think I could’ve done better in my self-portrait is my mouth and shadows. I feel like I did a really good job with my shadows, but I could have done just 1 thing better. What I am really worried about is that my shadows really look like squares. Shadows are supposed to be natural and smooth, but my shadows are not. The shadows also could’ve been a lot darker. Now that I came to Open-Studio, I have completed my shadows and I am really proud of myself. I think my mouth can still be a little bit more realistic, but I am okay with my mouth right now.

Unit 1 Statement of Inquiry “The Process Of Artistic Creation Can Lead To Self-DIscovery”
I think that I can describe myself as inquiring and a thinker because I have really worked hard on this project. I was an inquirer because I thought about how I was going to make my shadows, highlights, eyes, nose, and mouth. I kept on trying over and over again so that it would look good. I was a good thinker because once I created my eyes, nose, and mouth, I thought about how I would fit in the shadows and highlights. It was really hard for me to know where to put my highlights and my shadows so it would look really realistic. Overall I think that my drawing was a success and I was able to express my study of eyes, nose, and mouth.
Living with laptops is when we get our laptops and learn about it for two days. The first day we were making our blogs and signing into Veracross. I have learned a lot from this, for example, how to stay organized, what to do and what not to do. This has been a great experience in my life because I got to learn how to take responsibility for our laptops. Also in P.E we got our time off from our computers and did some exercise. Mr. Ralph has told us that if we sit down and play games on our computers for over an hour, our heart rate will start to slow down.
What did you learn about ATL’s through watching the videos?
I have learned that the ATL skills are very important because we will use them all the way until High School.
