Digital Communication/ Digital Footprint

As part of our Unit of Inquiry into How We Express Ourselves, we have been looking at how people use technology to communicate their ideas and feelings. We noticed that KP had a cluster map on their class blog. The children were fascinated by the number of people that had visited the KP blog, and by the different countries from which those visitors came. The wanted to know if we could have a cluster map on our KC blog.

I thought that this might be a good way to help the children understand the power of information technology as a communication tool. I wanted the children to begin to understand that, on one hand, the WWW provides a great way for people to communicate with others all over the world. However, I feel that it is important that they begin to realize that they leave a digital footprint, and that they they need to be responsible and ethical internet users.

We have just installed the cluster map. Thanks to everyone who taken time to visit our blog. Please feel free to leave a comment. The children are intrigued when they receive comments from people in other countries. The map has already generated lots of rich discussion and I look forward to seeing where the children take this!

    Salam from Azerbaijan!

    How are you Tasha?

Your blog is wonderful to read. The children are gorgeous. I love reading their discussions with each other trying to decide what to do with Sandy the goldfish. How is Lego, by the way? I hopw he is doing alright.

The thought of having digital footprints is interesting to me. I wonder the impacts I have on the digital world. I am constantly worry about the privacy issue and I only let people I have met to have access to my personal email address. I will continue to ponder this issue.

I will pass on this blog to other members of the ELC. We miss you and think of you always.

    Ciao!

I have enjoyed reading your blog and finding out what you have been doing at YIS. We have a map on our Kindergarten blog too – a great way to learn about the world and where our readers are from. I noticed we have left a red spot on your map on the top part of New Zealand. Isn’t it amazing how you can upload your movies onto your blog in Japan, and we can read and hear all about it here in New Zealand. Its a hard concept to grasp, and our newer children are also fascinated. From Beverly, teacher at Manaia Kindergarten
