Kindergarten picnic day

In Japan it is traditional at this time of year for elementary school children to pack bento boxes and take of for a picnic to enjoy the weather. The Kindergarten children and adults worked together to plan our picnic day carefully. With the help of the Japanese teachers, the children went shopping to buy ingredients and cooked food for their picnic over a couple of days. As they were cooking, the children made connections to our unit of inquiry into changing materials, noting how the ingredients changed during the cooking process.

Once the cooking was finished, the children enjoyed a morning of ‘splash fun’ before heading to the park to enjoy the weather and their carefully prepared food.

A big thanks to the Japanese department for all their thoughtful preparation and planning and for giving up their free time to come and spend the morning working with the kindergarten children. The preparation for the cooking and the cooking itself made a big contribution to our unit of inquiry into exploring materials, our Japanese culture program and to the children’s enjoyment of picnic day.
