3N Puppet Shows

3N performed their puppet shows for the kindergarten class. This was the culmination of their unit on puppetry. We started the unit with exploring puppets and how they are made. The students brought in their socks and made their own puppets to fit the characters for their play. The theme of the puppet show was the same as their unit in the classroom of recycling, reusing and reducing.

Puppetry is a dramatic form used to represent story and culture.
• The 3 types of puppets
• Creating a puppet character
• Creating an entertaining and informative puppet show

Grade 8 Elevator Scenes

Grade 8 students have been studying character. Through this unit, the explored stereotype, status and attitude. Each student created their own character to meet their group in the elevator scene.

Statement of Inquiry:
A character’s motivation, attitude and status form their identity.

Inquiry Questions:
• What are the key attributes that form a character? What is stereotype?
• Why would we study characterisation? Where else would we encounter character study? When are stereotypes useful? How does motivation develop a character?
• Can you judge a book by it’s cover? Does an actor have to resemble the character physically?

Grade 4 Drama

In each year of Drama class, we have a unit on dance. In Grade 4 the focus is music and rhythm. This is such an integral part of dance. This unit will also be continued in Music class as they explore rhythm with Mrs. Trefren. The students in Grade 4 explored and created rhythm using their bodies then using found objects. They first created rhythm patterns in their group, then moved to the rhythm and last chose a theme. In this way they synthesized music, dance and drama.

Central Idea:
Music and rhythm inspire us to dance.

• various sources of musical and natural rhythms
• creating your own rhythms
• choreographing movement to music, word and sound
• considering the audience when preparing a presentation

Grade 1 Drama

I hope by now you have heard from your child about Drama class. We have had a great start to the year. Both 1P and 1S have been exceptional classes in their approach to new games and activities. We have had a lot of fun! Our first unit is about joining in and working with each other. Please see the Central Idea below.

Central Idea:
The creative process involves joining in, exploring and taking risks.

Lines of Inquiry:
• Working together collaboratively
• Creating a safe environment
• Being a risk taker

I hope to share more pictures and video as we go but here are a few photos from the first weeks.

Grade 5 Conflict Scenes

As part of the Grade 5 Unit of Inquiry on conflict and finding peaceful solutions, the students discussed situations where they have disagreements and how they solve them. Ms. Kumamoto, our school counselor, joined us to co-teach this unit. This was part of PSHE in the classroom. Drama is the safe place to try out behaviors and role play. Through their discussions, they came up with steps to resolve conflict.

An example from 5Q:
1. Take a break, calm down, get some fresh air and breathe.
2. Talk it out and use the ‘I’ message.
3. Give some suggestions and think about a solution.
4. Try out a solution.
5. If it doesn’t work, look for a mediator.

Central idea:
Finding peaceful solutions to conflict leads to a better quality of human life.
Lines of Inquiry:
• How conflict is managed (responsibility/reflection)
• How conflict affects lives (perspective)
• Living and working together peacefully (responsibility)

The students worked in groups to role play and demonstrated the steps to resolve conflict.

Grade 3 Emotion Scenes

As part of their first unit in Drama, the Grade 3 classes developed scenes showing emotions. They started with a situation that gave the characters a negative emotion. Then had something change in the scene to give them a positive emotion. This is the first time the Grade 3 students have worked independently in groups to develop their own ideas into scenes. All were successful! This unit on emotions is co-taught with our school counselor, Eliza Kumamoto. We discussed and defined emotions and situations which cause certain emotions and acted them out. The information for the drama unit is below.

Who We Are: An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures, rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.

Central idea:
We can communicate feelings, ideas and experiences in drama.

Lines of Inquiry:
• Emotions
• Situations that cause certain emotions
• Solutions to negative emotions
• Developing a character

Please enjoy the Grade 3 scenes.

3L Dances

I just love this dance! I can’t stop watching it. When I watch it, I see it student enjoying themselves and grooving to the music. The focus of this unit on dance was symmetry, levels and use of space. Each group choreographed their own section with these three criteria in mind. The creativity and rhythm is exceptional. The students moved the way they felt like moving, whether it was hip hop, acrobatics, ballet, human machines or humor. Enjoy watching the video!
