Dances with Scarves and Ribbons

October 4, 2011 · 1 Comment · 4N

The creativity of the students in 4N never ceases to amaze me. The students take an idea and play with it, dance with it and present it back in surprising ways.

In the dances on video, the students had several criteria to include in their dances. Below are the criteria they had to work with. They worked together beautifully to choreograph delightful dances.

-Beginning, Middle and Ending
-Use of the floor space
-Group patterns
-Using the prop to dance
-Selected music after the dance was finished

Using Props to Inspire Movement

September 20, 2011 · No Comments · 4N

The students in 4N had eyed on my shelf some new ribbons and scarves I had ordered since last school year. They had asked repeatedly to use them. Today was the day when we took them out to experiment with movement. We shared the ways we could use the ribbons and scarves and tried them with varied music. At the end of the class, they discussed what they would like to choreograph and grouped themselves by what they wanted to do. Next week, we will choreograph in groups.

4N Dances Into the First Unit

September 14, 2011 · No Comments · 4N, Class Announcements

4N has begun their first unit on dance in drama class. Many of the students had a unit on dance last year and this was an opportunity to build on what they had learned.

Music and rhythm inspire us to dance.
• various sources of musical and natural rhythms
• choreographing movement to music, word and sound
• considering the audience when preparing a presentation

Their first choreography assignment for this unit involved creating patterns of movement. They worked in small groups and all were very involved in the planning. The short dance had to have a beginning, middle and ending and use the “stage” space. It also had to have a minimum of three patterns. I am always inspired by the student’s enthusiastic approach as they work to create together. All of them were eager to share and perform their dances for the class.
