7C Chem Activity

Today, we will complete a few different activities. The main one will be what’s below.

Atoms, Compounds & Mixtures Blog Post

Today, we will be making a blog post. The following needs to be included.

  • What is an atom? Describe the different parts and state where they can be found in an atom
  • What is an element? Give three examples of an element and give a use in the real world for each of these elements
  • What is a molecule? Give three examples of a molecule and give a use in the real world for each of these elements
  • What is a compound? Give three examples of a compound and give an use for each one
  • What is a physical change? Give an example
  • What is a chemical change? Give a few different examples

Once finished – post this on your blog. Make is look reasonably presentable.

7C Science – Yeast Investigation

For today, we are going to complete a Yeast Investigation. For today – we MUST complete the following sections from the Google Doc emailed to you:

  • Experiment Question
  • Variables
  • Variable Sum Up
  • Prediction
  • Apparatus
  • Procedure/Method

Basic Pointers

  • We will be working in groups of 2 or 3.
  • We will have the following equipment: 4 test tubes, warm water with yeast, 4 balloons, water with live yeast, water bath
  • Each test tube should have the same amount of yeast and water
  • One test tube will only have yeast and water.
  • You will change what you put into three test tubes. You either change the amount of substance you are putting in the test tubes (5mL, 10 mL, 15mL etc) or changing the liquid.
  • We will measure the results by how long it takes for the balloon to rise – or how high it rises in 10 minutes in the water bath

This section needs to be finished before the next lesson on Tuesday 27th of November.

7C Heart Dissection

Below are some facts on the heart -

The Heart:

  • Pumps blood around the body
  • Atrium pumps blood to and from the lungs
  • Ventricles pump blood too and from the body
  • Valves makes sure the blood travels in the correct direction

http://library.med.utah.edu/kw/pharm/hyper_heart1.html

For today, we will be doing the following:

  • Working in groups of 3 or 4 students. At least 1 student needs to be willing to cut the heart.
  • Taking many pictures of the heart with either your phone, camera or webcam
  • Make a keynote, prezi or PPT (also willing to hear other options) showing the different parts of the heart and explaining what they do (include pictures)

Instructions

Cutting the Heart & Taking Pictures

In a group you will have a heart, some dissection tools and a camera. Your group will need to take good clear photos that show the important features of the heart. Take plenty of pictures so that you have some to choose from.
You should take pictures that illustrate as many of the following as possible:

  •  The heart is a muscle.
  • The heart has veins and arteries.
  • The heart has 4 different chambers – which is which?
  • Some parts of the heart wall are thicker than others – which parts
  • The blood flows along a path through the heart
  • The heart contains valves.

Presentation

Your presentation (either PPT,  Keynote or Prezi) needs to include the following in this order.

  1. What is a heart? Briefly explain what the heart is and include an uncut picture of the heart.
  2. Where are the heart’s veins and arteries. Briefly explain the difference between a vein and artery. Also show a picture of a vein and artery
  3. What is the Atrium? Briefly explain what an atrium does. Include a picture of both the left and right atrium.
  4. What is the Ventricle? Briefly explain what the ventricle does. Include a picture of both the left and right atrium
  5. What are heart valves? Briefly explain what the heart valve does. Include a picture of the heart valve
  6. How does blood travel through the heart? Briefly explain how blood travels through the heart. Include a picture of this if you can
  7. Interesting Stuff. Include some interesting things you found out about the heart. The only fact you need to include is the thickness of different parts of the heart.

When finished – upload it to your blog!!

7C Science – Do You Have The Heart For It??

Today – we will be looking in a bit more detail about how the heart works and how we can measure the speed of the heart. First – I suggest you watch THIS small video clip from Brainpop to answer the questions below:

Q1) What is the heart and roughly how big is it?

Q2) There are 2 pumps found in the heart. What is the name of the 2 main parts of the pump?

Q3) Briefly describe what happens to blood when it first enters the right pump to the time it leaves the right pump? Where is the blood traveling to?

Q4) Briefly describe what happens to blood when it first enters the left pump to the time it leaves the rleft pump? How is the blood different compared to the blood that first enters the right pump?

Q5) Include a simple diagram that describes what happens for Q3 & Q4.

Q6) How long does it take for blood to travel around your body?

Q7) Why does our heart beat faster?

Once we have completed the questions above, we will then start a Heart Rate and exercise experiment. Have fun!!

7C Nutrition Work

Hi All,

We have quite a bit of work to do today. It’s our job to fill up a large board outside is Science by showing what we are currently doing in class. It sounds like heaps to do – but with 16 students and one teacher we’ll get it done in no time.

You might not know this – but we are using the inquiry method. It goes something a little like this:

  • Awareness & Understanding -> Action -> Reflection

We will look mainly into Awareness & Understanding and start to look at Action. Our work will be completed mainly by Comic Life. The following needs to be completed:

  1. What Nutrients are found in Food?
  • Fat
  • Oil
  • Carbohydrates
  • Calcium
  • Vitamin C
  • Fibre
  • Vitamin B
  • Potassium
  • For Each One – Include the following: What Nutrient Do You Have? Why is this Nutrient needed by the body? Which foods have this nutrient? Pictures of this Nutrient and Foods High in this Nutrient. REMEMBER – USE COMIC LIFE!!
  1. Food Tests. There are 4 Food Tests. We show how the food tests are completed. Each needs A Comic Life Sheet. Instructions are below.
  • Fat Test: State Equipment Needed. Tell us how to complete the Test. Show/explain a positive/negative test. Include some pics of you doing it!! Hint – it goes Oily!!
