Our recent trip to IKEA was primarily to buy comfortable furniture for our new reading corner, but we also decided to document the Maths involved in a trip like this. The students in 5G were entirely responsible for every aspect of this trip, from the planning to the budgeting, to the paperwork, to the transport and the design of the new space itself. The students were divided into groups depending on interest and each had to collaborate and make decisions for the good of the whole class. Here is a VoiceThread reflection with some of the photos of the day and the students thoughts about what went smoothly and what they would improve next time.

Dear Parents,
We are once again offering International School Book Club choices for children.
The International School Book Club is a great way for you and your child to choose books together. The leaflets feature a wide range of books for all tastes and abilities so there’s something to suit everyone. You’ll also notice that every book is discounted so you can make great savings and help to support our school. We receive free books for our classrooms and the library with every order placed.

There’s never any obligation to order but if you’d like to buy anything there’s a new easy way for you to order. We’ve set up an online school group order so that you can visit http://world.clubs-school.scholastic.co.uk/yokohama-international and add books to our basket. You’ll be able to pay securely online by credit or debit card and the books will arrive to your child’s classroom.

How to order online

Visit http://world.clubs-school.scholastic.co.uk/yokohama-international. The link takes you directly to the YIS school group order; you do not need to navigate to find it. You will be asked to enter your email address to register.
Select the books that you’d like to order and add them to your basket.
Checkout and choose the ‘school delivery’ option. Enter your child’s name and class so we can deliver directly to the classroom.

Please note, a 3% administration fee is added at checkout to cover customs and extra delivery costs.

If you’d like to buy any books from the Book Club catalogue please complete your online order by February 8.

We hope that you enjoy browsing through the leaflet and the website – it’s a great way to encourage your child to widen their reading experience.

Kind regards,
Rachel Farber

This week in the Elementary School is Digital Citizenship Week. This week we have been exploring the elements listed below and inquiring into “Balance, safety and behaviour” in our online lives.

What is Digital Citizenship?
Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology users should know to use technology appropriately. Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology. Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use. Too often we are seeing students as well as adults misusing and abusing technology but not sure what to do. The issue is more than what the users do not know but what is considered appropriate technology usage.
from:http://www.digitalcitizenship.net/
9 elements of Digital Citizenship
1. http://digitalcitizenship.net/Nine_Elements.htmlfull electronic participation in society.
2. Digital Commerce: electronic buying and selling of goods.
3. Digital Communication: electronic exchange of information.
4. Digital Literacy: process of teaching and learning about technology and the use of technology. 5. Digital Etiquette: electronic standards of conduct or procedure.
6. Digital Law: electronic responsibility for actions and deeds
7. Digital Rights & Responsibilities: those freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world.
8. Digital Health & Wellness: physical and psychological well-being in a digital technology world. 9. Digital Security (self-protection): electronic precautions to guarantee safety.
For a detailed document on 9 elements please check here: http://www.digitalcitizenship.net/ Nine_Elements.html

On Monday, 5G thought about Balance and considered how it feels to spend too much time online…

They are inspirational, professional, creative, thought-provoking, touching, well-written, emotional, interesting and convincing. The students have worked so hard to make these personal declarations of their core beliefs. Each has been through many edits and rewrites, each word has been sweated over and carefully chosen to express their author’s key values.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the interesting and inspirational thoughts of the 5G students.

Date: Monday – January 21, 2013
Time: 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Location: Loft

Michael is a specialist mathematics consultant from Melbourne, Australia. He is involved in many professional development programs in schools across Australia and Asia.
Michael is an enthusiastic and entertaining presenter who has a clear and practical approach to the challenges that confront schools and parents in mathematics. On this evening Michael will address the following issues:

What is my child learning in mathematics?
How can I help my child become an efficient problem solver?
How do children best learn mathematics?
How can parents promote quality thinking and learning?
How can I help my child in mathematics?

After the success of last year’s well attended, informative, and fun parent workshop, Michael Ymer is back again to help parents understand the role of Mathematics in our everyday lives. He will also focus on helping parents in understanding the way Mathematics is taught in schools. He will, with true Australian humor and poise, help us uncover what inquiry is, how inquiry can help us all become better mathematicians and how parents can help their children to be natural mathematical inquirers at home.

To register for this event please email our elementary Mathematics Coordinator, David Goddard goddardd@yis.ac.jp to confirm your attendance.
