This Saturday, two films by YIS students were entered in the Kanto Plains Film Festival.
The Mo(u)rning, a music video directed and edited by Jun Sekiya, for an original song by Jun Sekiya and Adam Davidson, was awarded a Gold medal and received nominations for Best Camera and Best Use of Music.
Diploma, a post-apocalyptic zombie drama made through the Filmeisters club, was developed by Yuki Nitta and Jun Sekiya; written, directed and edited by Jun Sekiya, and produced by Matthew Sato. Diploma was awarded a Gold medal and won the Palm d’Or, the festival’s highest honor. Yuki Nitta was nominated for Best Actor, and the film won awards for Best Actress (Hiyori Takashima), Best Camera (Sunbird Tsai), and Best Editing (Jun Sekiya).
Filmeisters wish to offer congratulations and thanks to everyone who played a role in making these films, from supervisors to make-up artists to bare-footed bloody-shirted snarling zombie volunteers. We are now working to arrange a YIS screening of these and other projects the Filmeisters have been working on this year. Stay tuned for details. (Mr. Pitter)

From 20~40% of American homeless youth are LGBTQ. Many of these homeless youth have disconnected from their families. The risks associated with homelessness, such as assault, substance abuse, and depression, are greater against LGBTQ youth than heterosexual homeless youth.
Many homeless shelters agree to take in LGBTQ youth – one of these homeless shelters, the Ruth Ellis Center, based in Detroit (where economic hardship has caused a general rise in homelessness over the past decade), aims to help exclusively LGBTQ homeless youth and offers not only housing, but therapy, education, and other necessary programs.
One way to help homeless LGBTQ youth is to donate to such shelters. Thus, this Friday, during break, we will be holding a bracelet sale (with a jar for any extra donations, if bracelets aren’t your thing). Please buy a bracelet for yourself or a sibling! Both plastic bead bracelets and crystalline bead bracelets will be sold.
Thank you for your attention! (YIS GaSP)
