What’s Love Got To Do With It?

Today we kicked off our fourth unit for grade 8 English this year, entitled ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’ Many apologies for the cliched song title, but I am afraid it couldn’t be helped!

We will be using the Health and Social Education AOI as a contextual lens for our examination of Shakespeare’s play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. In this unit, we will explore the nature of healthy and unhealthy relationships. In addition, we will examine the dramatic and literary techniques that authors such as Shakespeare use to help explore  and express these important concepts.

Since we are just starting to tune in to this topic, take some time to consider the unit question. Then, after you have formulated your ideas, write down a tentative thesis in the comments section.

  1. A healthy relationship means you can trust each other, through drama we can see what someone does while their friend, family member or lover is not there. We can see if they have a healthy or unhealthy relationship because we will be able to see into their private life.

  2. Trust makes a healthy relationship. We can explore this idea through drama by acting out different scenes in relationships which occur in real life.

  3. Trust and love are two things to a healthy relationship. No matter you’ll be there for them through the hard times, fun times and quiet times. By being empathetic. Putting yourself into someones shoes or thinking back on a feeling or and action you’ve felt and done.

  4. THESIS STATEMENT:

Love and relationships can be good and bad and we have to learn how to handle them. We build relationships by interacting with eachother and looking out for eachother.

  5. I think that a relationship where both people are happy and where they both trust each other and don’t want to change the other is a ‘healthy’ relationship. I think that we can explore this idea through drama by using skits and other acts to show a relationship between two people.

  6. In a relationship if the other person cares about you and you care about them then it is healthy but if you don’t care about each other it isn’t. We can explore this idea through drama by acting it out then seeing connections between us and the play and we can get a better understanding of what a healthy relationship is.

  7. What makes a ‘healthy’ relationship? How can we explore this idea through drama?

We can trust each other and open your heart to talk to each other and try to know more about that person you have a relationship with. I think that makes yourself more open, which makes the other people want to be with you in a good way. You can explore this in drama by maybe having a beginning, middle and the end between the relationship and see how relationship grows in through the whole story.

  8. A healthy relationship is created by being considerate for each other and respecting their choices. Letting go of someone who doesn’t like you is part of this because it’s their choice to like you or not and it’s a waste of time trying to get people to like you. We can explore this idea through drama by looking at the different emotions/relationships our actions could lead to.

  9. What makes a healthy relationship?
A healthy relationship is a relationship with communication, interaction and trust.

How can we explore this idea through drama?
We can explore this idea through drama by seeing what a relationship without communications and avoidance compared to a relationship with communications, interactions and trust.

  10. I think that a healthy relationship is where you both trust each other and they don’t hide anything from each other. I don’t think that telling all your secrets are always what makes a healthy relationship but when you have a healthy relationship it’s likely that you feel safe telling them the secrets. I think to make a healthy relationship you need to build trust and support towards each other. You usually care about that person when you have a healthy relationship with them.
In drama, you can see the relationships that people have and the healthy or unhealthy relationships that the characters have with each other. In drama (plays) you can also see the thoughts and emotions of the characters which help you understand what each character is thinking and why they take the actions they take.

  11. A healthy relationship is created by trust. If you lie to your lover, that is a unhealthy relationship. In drama, we can see what people would feel and do when their lover breaks up with them.

  12. I think ‘trust’ is most important in a healthy relationship. Having someone that you can trust, and having no one that can replace them probably means you’re in a healthy relationship with that person. Also, having a mutual respect towards each other leads to a healthy relationship 🙂

We can explore these ideas through looking at relationships happening through plays and novels where the author USUALLY really emphasizes the relationship between multiple characters.
It’s really hard to identify whether you’re in a healthy relationship with someone whereas reading and looking through others’ relationships and identifying a healthy/unhealthy relationship is a lot easier.

  13. What makes a ‘healthy’ relationship? How can we explore this idea through drama?

A healthy relationship would mean that you are able to trust each other on any occasion, and help each other on any circumstance. We can explore this idea through drama by showing the audience what bad and good relationships are and see if it makes any difference.

  14. I think that there are a lot of things that can make a healthy relationship and those things are different for each relationship. In my opinion I think that trust is very important to make a healthy relationship. We can explore this theme through drama by looking at how the characters interact with each other.

  15. Healthy relationships are made by having friends you and trust and rely on. We can act out the play and see the character’s perspective and feel what kind of position he or she is in.

  16. A healthy relationship is where you have people that you can trust which I believe is the key to a good relationship. Also a good relationship will be that you will be able to rely on them and you would look out for each other and help each other. We can explore this through drama by looking at how the characters change depending on the person they are with and see if they trust each other.

  17. I think there are several things which make a healthy relationship, which are slightly different with each relationship, but there are several things in common, such as being able to trust each other. Trust is very important in a healthy relationship. Not causing bodily harm is another important aspect of healthy relationships. Unhealthy relationships can involve many negative things, such as a lack of trust, physical abuse or trauma, and inability to work or associate with the other person and so on. With drama, we can show healthy relationships and non-healthy relationships in plays, and other forms of drama between characters.

  18. A healthy relationship is when you can trust and rely on someone. We can explore this through drama by showing how people act in a healthy and unhealthy relationship.

  19. A healthy relationship consists of components such as trust and respect. A healthy relationship between two people shouldn’t hide any secrets, nor should there be anything that either person doesn’t know. There should also be respect towards each other in a healthy relationship. We can explore this idea through drama by re-enacting scenes from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and observing the character’s reactions and emotions in a relationship and see what makes a healthy relationship.

  20. A healthy relationship is when you are able to trust each other and rely on each other, but for the different types of relationships it is different. Through drama we can see how the people communicate with each other and their thoughts on each other.

  21. One of the basic need to have a healthy relationship is to be able to trust one and another. By trusting each other, you would respect the other person and enjoy being with them. If both of them feel the same and care about each other, we can call it a healthy relationship. We can spot a lot of betrayal and dislike in drama but on the other hand, we can find trust and love in drama too.

  22. Healthy relationships are made mainly of trust and reliability on cooperation. This means that in an unhealthy relationship the two will not trust each other and have problems cooperating. This can be explored through drama by acting out skits/short scenes of how each would react to different situations of their partner’s state of mind.

  23. A healthy relationship is when you are able to trust or communicate well with each other. I think that similar personalities would make a healthy relationship. When you have completely different personalities, it would be very likely to make an unhealthy relationship. A common one, which is “peer influence” is another way to make a healthy relationship. The word “peer” stands for the person who are same or have close age as you, which means that it would be likely to make a healthy relationship because they have similar understanding of the real world. We can explore this idea through drama by looking at how characters are socializing with each other and what kind of emotion they will express when they meet another character.

  24. A healthy relationship is shown when you can tolerate and enjoy being with the other person/people. For example, in a family, you would be having dinner with everyone in the family, having conversations that involves everyone in the family. Trust is also a big component to a healthy relationship. If both didn’t trust each other, they would be keeping silent for quite a bit, instead of being open to each other and asking for advice on certain things. I think we can explore this through drama by showing each other’s perspective on what they think about each other and their reactions to the other person’s deeds.

  25. A healthy relationship is people who communicate well. We can explore this idea through by knowing their emotion when a character is interacting with another character.

  26. Healthy relation ship is when people can trust each other and also can be cooperative with each other. Also, healthy relationship is when people don’t fight and be happy. Even though that really doesn’t happen in the real life.
We can explore this by friendship, love, family, and etc. Basically, you could find it everywhere where people are with somebody.

  27. I think that trust is a very important role for a healthy relationship. Healthy relationships can be seen when 2 or more people have trust in there partner or friend, or even family.

  28. There are many different types of relationships so if to know what a healthy relationship is the basics trust, loyalty and friendship. These are the components a stable or healthy relationship would need.We can show this through Drama by the types of words and language we use. We can also see this through how people react to different situations and we can also explore relationships from peoples POV.

  29. Healthy relationships are different for each different type of relationship. Love relationships need more trust and similar personalities to be healthy while family relationships sometimes can do better when the family doesn’t talk. Conflicts can come up in relationships and in some relationships these conflicts are good as they create new possibilities and more trust is developed with these conflicts and mistakes. But of course overall a healthy relationship should be one where people can trust each other and rely on each other. With drama you can look at the different faces of relationships and you can have a look at both sides to see if one and another trust each other or don’t. Drama also allows you to see what happens if bad parts happen. A story in a play shows how relationships change and develop through drama.
