As the first semester comes to an end, all students look forward to the annual Spirit Day/Studentainment on the second to last school day of the year. In these events, the spirit of all YIS Dragons is really challenged and unified. It may be ironic that the spirit is called upon in a competition between the grades in Middle and High School during Spirit Day, however at the end of the day in Studentainment, the overwhelming love and support YIS students have for each other and their talents is brought to life in applause, laughter and in the jaw-dropped faces of many of the audience members.Spirit Day was held before lunch in the gym, as it is every year. This time however, we introduced new games in addition to the traditional Tug of War and Dodgeball: Trivia and the “Tennis-Ball-in-Tights-On-Your-Head” game was introduced (suggested by our ever so creative supervisor, Mr. Clark). The gym roared with cheers and laughter as students and teachers played games and as hostess Jin (Gr10) misread tittles as titties. The gym was filled with differently dressed up students, wherein each grade was represented through a different theme, as follows:
6th: Miss Matched
7th: Characters
8th: Gangster
Freshmen: Superheroes
Sophomores: Jungle Theme
Juniors: Jabawakees
Seniors: IB Prisoners
Spirit Day ended with the Seniors (as IB Prisoners) being victorious at first place with the spirit award.

Studentainment ‘11 was another great success as well. With over 15 acts, the middle and high school was entertained by various forms of talent, ranging from musical performances to card tricks to dances and even poems! Teachers have quoted this Studentainment to have been one of the “funnest, smoothest-running Studentainments” ever. Hosted by Mr. De Ruyver (VP) and Mr. Whiting (Gr9) as the MC’s they both did great jobs introducing one act to another while keeping it fun and interesting.

Da Dance: Thiller

On November 4th, the High School Student Council hosted its second dance of the school year ‘11-’12. With much effort from the council, this event encompassed several new features including a mocktail bar, invited guests from St. Maur, a more organised bag/cloak system and perhaps above all, new scented smoke machines, lasers and a strobe light.
With a redesigned dancing area in which the “chill corner” was moved outside, more students were able to comfortably take a breather next to the mocktail bar after dancing, jumping and shaking the auditorium to its bones. The auditorium was filled with spooky Halloween decorations such as blood stained sheets, faux spider webs and many other decorations, which created a great Halloween mood!

At the mocktail bar, combinations of various sodas were sold, along with many other mouth refreshing beverages and a variation of snacks. The mocktail menu included a wide range of soda mixtures. For example Witch’s Breath was a combination of CocaCola and grenadine. These drinks would tingle the experience of those dancers willing to pay the cheap price of 50¥ per cup.
As the entrance fee was only ¥200 for those with legitimate costumes, many students took advantage of this and contributed in giving the dance its spooky atmosphere.Another new enovation was to make it more convenient for students living further out in Tokyo. The dance time was moved forward so that it would end at 21:30 instead of 22:00, allowing thirty minutes of extra transport time to get our peers home on time.
With all the new innovations “Da Dance: Thiller” turn out great success. A great shoutout to all the family for kindly lending us decorations for this dance and the chaperones of the night who took there Friday even off to help us out.

On Friday the 2nd of September 2011, the Student Council held its first dance – Da Dance at the Auditorium. The dance aimed to welcome back the student body, both former and new and to also increase the integration between all high-school students in order to ultimately over come and bridge the gap between seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshman.

Approximately 10 hours was spent on the preparation of this event, including ideas for poster, layout, music selection, buying beverages and etc. The tremendous amount of effort and preparation put into this event was one of the key factors that lead to its success.
With new innovations, such as the laser, the dance turned out as a great success, with over 100 students attending the dance. In addition to the new technology and creating an enjoyable atmosphere, the council also wanted to assure the safety of personal valuables, such as the computers that were newly handed to the students by the “Connective Learning Community”. In order to do this the council introduced a clerk system so that students could drop off their school bags and valuables. This idea also turned out to be a success.

Ice Cream Social

On Monday the 22nd of August 2011, the Student Council held its first event – the Ice Cream Social. By basically digging into the StuCo’s pockets, we provided free ice cream as a welcome back present to the rest of the high school during lunch.

By doing this, we hoped to promote the image of StuCo – by being able to host an event on the first Monday back from summer vacation, we wanted to create an uplifting, positive atmosphere for the students, especially the new incoming ones.
About 3000¥ was spent in buying chocolate and vanilla ice cream popsicles on Sunday, all of which was gobbled up by the sweet-toothed high school students.
The event was planned as a surprise, and while a lot of students appreciated the free ice cream, they did not seem to understand the purpose too well (fair enough, who randomly gives out free ice cream?)
Omnomnomnom.
All in all however, the first impression of the Student Council 2011-2012 was made with this event, and we hope that with this, we have caused interest in the student body for the upcoming “Da Dance” event on September 2, 2011.
