Summative Assessment – Creating a your own Notation System
A – Knowledge and Understanding – Your notation system should demonstrate your understanding of the information notated for the musician to perform the piece correctly
C – Creativity – Create a notation system which clearly notates pitch, sharps/flats/naturals, duration, and rests
Communication – Is your notation system easy to read and informative
Thinking – Have you been creative fully thought out your notation system so the performer could play the music without mistakes
What information does a music score tell the performer in order for them to play the music correctly?
BELOW are several examples of graphic scores.
- What kind of performance information do they deliver?

I think you will agree that some of the systems below work better than others. What kind of system can you create to fully notate all the information a musician would need to reproduce the music in a performance?
- Create and present a visual graphic score notation system which notates a short melody like Happy Birthday below
- You can use any visual method you like other than western musical notation
- YOU WILL GET POINTS FOR HOW CLEAR YOUR NOTATION SYSTEM IS FOR THE PLAYER (Does your score give them ALL the information they need to perform the piece accurately?)
- Table – Create a table or instruction panel that clearly explains how to use the notation you created
- Pitches – Sharps/Flats/Naturals – Include the pitches of the melody (How do we know what key to play on the piano?)
- Note Duration – Note Values and Rests – length of notes and rests (long or short notes) rhythm of melody
- Measures – how can you visually break up the music so you don’t get lost when reading the music?
- Dynamics – at least 4 different volumes (soft, medium, loud) plus accent
- at least 2 more things to your notation system that you might need when trying to notate a piece on the grand staff using two hands that are not included in the overview.
- to score a 7/8 you should include all of the above and then add at least 2 more things to your notation system that you might need when trying to notate a piece using the Treble and Bass clef or grand staff using two hands that are not included in the overview.
Now use your own ideas!
Create a visual image of the score (graphic score) that follows the melody going up and down accordingly and includes a method to show short and long notes to represent the 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 notes in the music.
Notate one of the following two arrangements of the famous melody Happy Birthday using your own original notation system.
