Let’s use the C major scale and build chords upon each degree of the scale as shown below:

Playing I -IV – V – vi triads found in C Major

*NOTICE that the I, IV, and V chords are Major Triads. The vi chord however is a Minor Triad

*CAPITAL numerals are used for Major triads and small case numerals for minor chords.

 

Try playing the four chords on the piano in different orders for a partner.  In the key of C the four chords would be:

I = C       (CEG)
IV= F     (FAB)
V = G     (GBD)
vi= Am  (ACE)

Triad Formulas – go up 4 half steps, then 3 half steps from Root note

C MAJOR TRIAD

 

F Major (Major Triad Formula – go up 4 half steps, then 3 half steps from Root note)

G Major (Major Triad Formula – go up 4 half steps, then 3 half steps from Root note)

Notate your four chords.  TEACHER PROJECT HANDOUT ON WHITEBOARD
