G8 U2 – Starter – Create a Commercial

One of the reasons commercials love to use music 

is because music has the ability to evoke a range of emotions. From an upbeat, happy guitar, a melancholic piano arpeggio or even high-tech sound effects, the music that accompanies commercials can set the tone of what the commercial is trying to convey.

REVIEW AND DEFINE THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS OF MUSIC. Think about how the following Elements of Music could be used:

  • Tempo – how fast or slow – speeding up or slowing down
  • Pitch – (high or low)
  • Timbre – Instrument choice (each instrument has its own unique sound)
  • Texture – thin or thick (one instrument or more than one)
  • Dynamics – loud or soft, accents
  • Rhythm – long or short note values, long tones, short staccato tones, syncopation

GIVE IT A TRY – performing Jingle Bells to create a specific mood. *Try playing Jingle Bells in different ways by altering the above elements of music and see how you can alter the sound or feeling of the song to create a variety of different MOODS.

This is a game that focuses on musical composition that emulates a specific mood.  

Working in Pairs

Choose a product (there are some suggestions below) and write a 10 second jingle composition for it.  There will be no spoken words, just the music that you create.

What mood would you try to set?

Each group plays their song for the class and discusses why they chose the music they did.
